Jesus' Tomb Opened for First Time in Centuries

"The original rock where Jesus Christ is traditionally believed to have been buried in Jerusalem has been exposed to the light of day for the first time in centuries.

According to an exclusive report by National Geographic, a partner in the project at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the original rock surface has been covered with marble slabs since at least 1555, and possibly longer. During a conservation project to shore up the shrine surrounding the tomb, a team from the National Technical University of Athens in Greece realized that they would need to access the substructure of the shrine to restore it, said Fredrik Hiebert, the archaeologist-in-residence at the National Geographic Society. [See Photos of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre]

"The Greek conservation group are the first, as far as we know, to actually open this," Hiebert told Live Science. "It's pretty exceptional."

Wait wait....
This is the spot that Emperor Constantines mother decided was Jesus's tomb 400 years after the crucifixion.

That is not the same as Jesus's tomb. It might be and it might not.
Pretending that this is knowledge isn't too impressive.

It will be interesting to find out the full report of what archaeologists find. I suspect there will be no 'smoking gun' found but I'm reserving judgement.

I'll be very interested to see what they find.

From the video:
"The modest tomb has never been photographed, and no drawings exist. This is the first time anyone alive today has seen the Holy Bed. Conservationists were surprised to find something their instruments didn't detect -- A layer of debris underneath the marble cover. They will analyze the debris to learn more about the ancient resting place."

Article:
"The exposure of the burial bed is giving researchers an unprecedented opportunity to study the original surface of what is considered the most sacred site in Christianity. An analysis of the original rock may enable them to better understand not only the original form of the tomb chamber, but also how it evolved as the focal point of veneration since it was first identified by Helena, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, in A.D. 326.

"We are at the critical moment for rehabilitating the Edicule," Moropoulou said. "The techniques we're using to document this unique monument will enable the world to study our findings as if they themselves were in the tomb of Christ."

It would be something if they could reconstruct the tomb and chamber.

The one I was familiar with looks like this, but it's an example:
tomb1.jpg

This is how the ediface looked before restoration:

So how did they know they found Christ's tomb?

"When the pagan shrines were cleared away in the early fourth century few expected to find any trace of the original tomb. To their surprise the tombs shown below where found and also the one identified as being used by Jesus. How was it known? It was the only one found there with a rolling stone! Fragments of the rolling stone are still in the possession of the church (fragments because pilgrims kept breaking of pieces for relics and souvenirs in ancient times).

Mark 16:2-4 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?" 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.

Rolling stone tombs were in fact quite rare during that period. Out of all the period tombs excavated in Jerusalem and area only a handful had a rolling stone, the remainder having rectangular stones that were merely pushed into place. Interestingly all the tombs found with a rolling stone were those of rich or prominent individuals/families. Perhaps this was due to the fact it would have cost more to have a stone shaped to round. Jesus, of course, was buried in one such tomb..."

I quote this as an 'interest article'. It carries no authenticity nor is it scripture of any sort. It belongs to 'Pilgrims Notes' of Baha'is who visited the then Guardian of the Baha'i Faith, Shoghi Effendi. This is a record of what a pilgrim heard him say but it is not verified so it might or might not be true. Time will tell though.

"People wonder what happened to the body of Christ after the crucifixion. It was buried by the disciples under the wall of Jerusalem to protect it from the Roman legions. It remained buried there for some 260 years. (The Guardian gave the exact number of years but afterwards none of the pilgrims could remember precisely the number.) It remained buried under the wall of Jerusalem until the mother of the Emperor Constantine, who had herself become a Christian, came to Jerusalem and had the Church of the Holy Sepulcher built – at which time the body of Christ was removed from under the wall of the city and was placed under the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. And that is where it is today. The Baha’is should be aware of this fact when they visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which is the holiest place in Christendom."

Hi Folks..

Interesting article - but personally Im with Mandi here and will say I also smell something like bullcrap..lol...

Thing is - most forget - or fail to understand Christ really - but Christ actually did NOT leave a "dead body" for us to bury or enshrine ANYWHERE - there is no "tomb" at all......
There is though - this place - where He TRANSFIGURED His form - you know - LITERALLY - changed His physical form into "energetic essence" and transcended - left this mortal plane of existance altogether, completely.......

Perhaps this is the place He achieved that..?....I dont know my self - but it is a bit pointless anyway for as I say HE HIMSELF is not there no trace of Him remains there at all - and it could have been ANYWHERE of course that this transfiguration occurred, nothing "special" about that particular place.....Talk of "jesus tomb" is then nonesense - for He left no body at all and is not "buried" or "enshrined" anywhere...lol...

That's a matter of opinion. Christ clearly did not physically resurrect so the body exists.

Do Bahai believe christ rose in spirit and flesh? Some christians say he rose in both. If he did, when it says "they moved jesus" What did thet move?

That, and if there were flesh, the laws of physics would have worked to drain the body of all water and recycle among the dirt. So basically, theyd be moving blocks of marble but not jesus himself.

Some scriptures says he did raise in body and spirit to the lord. Then jesus came back in his body to talk with his apostles hen returned to his father.

If the body stayed, by laws of nature, it doesnt exist anymore. If scripture is right and the apostles say an empty tomb before they and I think his mother seeing christ rise in body and spirit, what are the archeologist moving? I cant be jesus.

Hi Folks..

LoverOfHumanity;

lol - actually that above is the "opinion" - fact is as recorded by those present is that YES He did ACTUALLY "physically resurrect" - except this was not a regular flesh and blood MORTAL body any longer - but the fully Divine Adamus - a Being and body form made of that which we with our science would call "electromagnetic energy" - and which Christ Himself termed as Divine Light that is over the All... in other words then Christ materialised again as literally a "being of Light" - and this is only hinted at in the "bible" who supposedly give His truth ;)

LITERALLLY - He took His material "solid form" - broke it down by FORCE OF WILL - for MIND creates all things - here He was PROVING His essential teaching as legitimate fact..Broke it down into that which we call molecules -atoms - sub atomic particles - and beyond - deeper - into the semi physical realms that science now investigate but human senses have no direct access to (Mind does) - He became the BASE and PRIMAL energy of the material worlds of form - nothing but LIGHT itself as we would perceive it - or zero point energy if you are thus inclined - not the standard type of photonic light that we see with mortal senses - but as He said the primal energy that is over all existance - the DIVINE Light and MIND that accompanies its Presence of Our Father..

He literally BECAME that - right before their eyes - and even CHANGED HIS FORM REPEATEDLY for them to demonstrate such mastery of self clearly...In that form He stayed around for many many days actually was seen by many encountered directly by many - and told the disciples specifically that they should now REMAIN witht Him unitl they 2receive the Holy spirit from Him" - in other words His new ENERGETIC state was going to likewise transform them somewhat - and he said that once this happened THEY TOO could now do ALL that He had done if they had His faith (truth of MIND)...

All about MIND and the ENERGY of CREATION itself - one and the same thing - my Father cause of All... I can show you plenty of scripture to support this - ORIGINAL scripture explains it all clearly - but even bible as said, gives hints and clues to His purely METAPHYSICAL truth.. For instance - immediatly He rises - He encounters the women with Mary yes..?...And look - HE TURNS THEM AWAY !! He tells them clearly NO - DO NOT EVEN APPROACH ME YET !!! My ASCENSION is not yet complete !! Let it sink in - and realise again it is an ENERGETIC phenomena - stay back He says because your low base energy will literally CONTAMINATE Me and stop me attaining the Father ; )

All about MIND CREATING physical existance FROM the Divine Light that the MIND IS - therefore as He said try to see - KNOW THY SELF - become fully known and ALL MYSTERY will be disclosed - drink from my mouth He said - become ME and I will BECOME You without ANY seperation possible....Know the Self in this manner He said and MIRACLES will happen for you - when the TWO (divided mortal mind) make peace together in the same house (mortal body) - then that one can tell even the mountain to move and it shall obey.. MIND create EVERYTHING and 2everything is created FROM the "energy" that is mind - inseperable if only we would realise it......THIS TRUTH is what the resurrection was REALLY about - showing us by demonstration Who and What we TRULY are - spoken clearly as always for those with ears to hear ;)

What the apostles saw was a vision like what they saw on Mount Tabor. Here is what happened then...

Thou didst ask as to the transfiguration of Jesus, with Moses and Elias and the Heavenly Father on Mount Tabor, as referred to in the Bible. This occurrence was perceived by the disciples with their inner eye, wherefore it was a secret hidden away, and was a spiritual discovery of theirs. Otherwise, if the intent be that they witnessed physical forms, that is, witnessed that transfiguration with their outward eyes, then there were many others at hand on that plain and mountain, and why did they fail to behold it? And why did the Lord charge them that they should tell no man? It is clear that this was a spiritual vision and a scene of the Kingdom. Wherefore did the Messiah bid them to keep this hidden, ‘till the Son of Man were risen from the dead,’ that is, until the Cause of God should be exalted, and the Word of God prevail, and the reality of Christ rise up.

Baha'is believe it was the Body of the Cause of Christ which rose. Not the physical body. The conversations Christ had after His Ascension with His disciples were visions not physical meetings. After Christ died Mary awakened the disciples that Jesus was the Saviour not an ordinary man and when they realised this they went out and preached to the world and you can see now how the Cause of Christ spread.
