GOP Icon Leaves the GOP

metis

aged ecumenical anthropologist
My parents must be turning over in their grave because they were die-hard Republicans who felt that George Will walked on water:

Washington (CNN)George Will, the conservative commentator and columnist, said Sunday that he changed his voter registration to "unaffiliated" 23 days ago and has left the Republican Party because of Donald Trump.

"After Trump went after the 'Mexican' judge from northern Indiana then (House Speaker) Paul Ryan endorsed him, I decided that in fact this was not my party anymore," Will said on "Fox News Sunday."...

Will, who worked on President Ronald Reagan's 1980 campaign, also said at the luncheon that Trump as president with "no opposition" from a Republican-led Congress would be worse than Clinton as president with a Republican-led Congress.

When asked by PJ Media about his message to conservatives regarding Trump, Will responded, "Make sure he loses. Grit their teeth for four years and win the White House."

They really don't want Trump winning. Corporate welfare is more important to the republican elites.

What is even worse for the partisan GOP, such as Ryan, McConnell, and the Koch's, is the serious possibility that Trump's effect down ticket will threaten the Republican led Congress.
Clinton with a Senate majority and bunch of new congressmen is quite a distinct possibility. And if she owes her victory to Bernie Sanders and makes good on whatever she had to promise, this will be a whole new country.
So I am cheering for Bernie, but voting for Godzillary.

Thoughts?

Further evidence conservatives have been splintered into smaller group affiliations (this has been happening for a while). Hopefully liberals can follow their lead.

Revelation all the time
I'm pretty sure George Will has never walked on water.

Pubs he possibly endorsed in last 20 years are ones that would've had me scratching my head and wondering what he actually understands or means by 'being conservative.' Perhaps not, but just saying, it seems like a rash (public) move on his part. Then again, why would anyone wish to be formally affiliated with a party when independence makes far more sense?

You could probably count the number of people who will change their vote due to this on one hand. The overwhelming majority of Trump's base are simply too ignorant and/or too hate-driven to care.

(Too bad we don'y have William F. Buckley Jr. around today. He would have chewed Trump up and spit him out.)

William F'buckly.....the man who thought The Flintstones was a science documentary.

Anyway, do you think Hillary voters are all that smarter & educateder?
I don't see greater wisdom in reasons they offer.

Honest opinions are one thing, of course, but correct opinions based on an understanding of the situation is another thing.

There are conservatives who I respect even as I disagree with their opinions. Will is one of those.

He's an OK guy.
I was thinking of William F'buckley's long ago debate on evolution v creationism.
Guess which side he took.
People can hold dubious opinions, so no matter how respected they are, one shouldn't let them guide one's weltanschauung.
We may all have different understandings without attributing the other side to mere ignorance & bigotry.
It's rude, & also very often a glass house thingie.

An interesting thing I observe.....
As the Republican Party moves away from conservatism, & towards the Democrats,
conservatives are leaving. This seems to engender respect by Dem sympathizers
for the conservatives, with whom they have even less in common.

Actually the Republican party is moving more towards the National Socialist party than towards the Democrats.

The voters in the Republican party have always been less conservative than those running the party. Republicans running state governments are almost always more moderate than national Republicans (Brownback excepted).
