It's looking likely that Scotland will split off and try to stay in the EU. Longer term Northern Ireland will probably merge with Eire, the remain majority there has strengthened the hand of the republicans. The Welsh aren't going to be happy because they currently get a lot of EU money which they will lose, so they they might well be wanting independence too at some point. Cornwall is, well, Cornwall. ;)

I'm a fifth-generation Irish-American, my great-great grandmother having (most likely, since her maiden name was Gilligan, she was devoutly Catholic, was a massive rebel, and she came over alone as a teenager) come from the region around Belfast, so I know a little bit about the situation in Ireland today. (Key phrase being "a little bit." I do know, for instance, what you mean by Eire, but I don't know what the degree of nationalist tension is at the moment.)

I know the situation in Scotland isn't that dissimilar to what Ireland's was before indepednence. I also know the Welsh basically are the cultural and linguistic survivors of the pre-Anglo-Saxon British natives, and therefore probably would like independence for that reason alone.

But, I'm afraid your ;) is lost on me, because I know almost nothing about Cornwall, except that they are another pre-AS group of British natives.

I could well imagine a trumpish vote to get out, followed by frantic googling to learn something about them.
Tom

Which, being frantic, would most likely cause people to be misinformed since they'd only see surface statements without stopping to consider nuance.

Heck, I've even heard people who typically share the same (liberal-leaning) views as me call the UN "useless."

Hopefully in a couple years I'll be moving to the South Western part of Canada. More liberal than where I'm at now, better civil rights and protections than where I'm at now, and my Master's and Doctorates will cost much less.
I'll be in Ontario. Maybe we'll visit.

Sorry but nationalism and conservatism really doesn't sit well with me. I especially find nationalism to be a very dangerous idea, your signature being the perfect example.

We'd love to have ya, too!
Yeah, I've heard that Canada is way more welcoming of immigrants than America.

Cool! I'm shooting for the Victoria area, or southern part of British Columbia in general. Warmer than other parts of Canada, even warmer than where I am in Indiana, and if I get to Victoria I'll be pretty close to Seattle (about as far away as I am to Indianapolis now), which will be cool.

I'm not too fond of nationalism either. Nationality is nothing more than happenstance of birth, and hardly worth taking pride in just because it's where your mom just happened to squeeze you out.

Evidently, the UK is in for some fun times in the next days, weeks, months and years.

It is interesting, over here on the other side of the pond, most, if not all, of our media outlets are still trying to figure out why on earth the UK would want to leave the EU. This is especially true of the brilliant, nay, visionary, handling of their collective economies, their keen awareness of less bureaucratic red tape and their unflagging interest in the views of the average person. It is a mystery.

Except they are preparing to negotiate a deal that is worse for them in terms of their financial contribution, may require even more concessions on migration, and yet will not give them a voice in EU policy.

There's a reason the rest of the world is puzzled.

There's upset and then there's throwing a temper tantrum. I wasn't particularly happy when the Conservatives won the General Election but I didn't take to the streets and create a petition to try to out them.

Actually you should've been. If not only for the ridiculous FPTP you people still use. Have you ever seen the result under a proportional system?

Brits like to whine about the EU not being democratic enough, while they are from the UK which is probably even less democratic.
Hell before I read it on the Internet I did not know what Gerrymandering was because it simply does not exist anywhere outside of Anglophone countries.

I can't claim any real expertise on this topic, but I watched most of the "Brexit" documentary. If I recall correctly, many of the top EU bureaucrats are appointed for life and cannot be ousted? If that's true, it seems like a recipe for disaster and I'd have voted to exit on that point alone.

If that is true (I quite honestly don't know and don't care) its the same for those in the British civil service who write the laws of the UK.
They are also unelected.

Also the whole Brexit "documentary" is bad. Really bad.

Why do you have a ****ing quote from Mein Kampf as your signature?! More distressing is why everyone seems oblivious to it! This is extremely offensive and just disgusting! How dare you!

Holy **** it really is.

Regarding the Brexit crap:

- They vote to leave the EU because of too many EU-Immigrants,
- too many EU regulations and
- not enough say in important matters

- after they left they want to be part of the common market,
- which includes the freedom of movement and
- thus EU-Immigrants,
- adhering to quite a lot EU regulations (Norway for example has to adhere to around 75% of them) and
- without having any right to have a say in the whole matter
- oh and they'll still have to pay the EU, though it would probably only be around half what they pay now

And on top of that it might actually be the end of the United Kingdom.

Well its not my country...

This is why they did it. Well maybe not the intention but I have my suspicions.

Is anyone else uncomfortable that such a move had such a ripple? One country voted to withdraw from such a union, but yet it sent a wave to the heart and soul of pretty much every "developed" country, even though, ideally, the state and markets shouldn't be so intimately linked.
It makes me wonder for sure. I read something about adjusting for actual market value.

Agreed. We could do with four or five people representing those views just to give this place more diversity politically. Not so many it destabilises the current culture (as it is inclusive and diverse in other ways) but enough to challenge it and get people to do a double take sometimes. in terms of religion this place is very diverse but politically it's almost unanimously centre left with a few Trump voters and libertarians to spare.

(Although honestly I'd want a bunch of deists or Christians inclined to natural theology and old earth-creationism to form a middle ground between atheists and theists and really make those sort of debates less repetitive.)

You must not be paying attention. We have a lot of nationalists and conservatives on this board. We also had/have racists (apparently we have a neo-Nazi now, as well...). There's more nationalists on this site than there are socialists and communists.

To me, it is startling because it's a flash of just how much power corporations may already be wielding over the state. We already had some saying they are too big to fail to get bail out money, are we at risk of them holding legislation hostage by making pleas of stock values?

People have the right to choose what's best for their nation. Whether it be Ayatollahs, Morsi, Trump, Gaddafi, Modi, Trudeau...whomever.

The majority of Brits chose to leave, who are we to tell them they're wrong? Attacking the OP like a bunch of bullies means jack squat if you're not a Brit.

We can tell ourselves that, we don't need anyone else doing it. ;)

Yeap and the young voters who didn't vote have no one to blame but themselves and their lack of political participation. They screwed themselves over.

You don't get second chances in life with big things like this, that's not how things work.
