Mandi,
make yourself safe. If you feel like you might be in any danger, call someone for help. Even if that's the police.
The Lord should not be making you do anything unsafe. Stay protected.

Keep yourself safe. Kali would not mind if you come back to have some food if you are hungry. The woods are near your place and you can always return to them. If it is safe, it is nice to be in woods.

I guess I just needed some time with nature to clear my head... hadn't done that in so long... I am home now as I ran out of water and wanted an actual bed :s

Sorry if I worried anyone.

Namaste,

Good to hear your ok.

I wounder why people are concerned?, many great Yogi have reached Samadhi in forests, the woods are a wonderful and peaceful place in Hindu tradition. Maybe its a western thing where the woods are dark and scary places, but for Indians (at least the traditional Hindus) going to the forest and being at one with nature puts things into perspective, some go to great leanth to leave the concrete jungle to enter into the multi-dimensional web of life that is nature.

Even our texts such as the Aranyakas (forest books) are aptly named after the Majesty of the forest.

I have, many times in the past, done the same thing. Next time don't tell anyone, other than your family, or people in real life who could help you. Give them an ETA for home. What people don't know won't hurt them. A retreat is a great reflective thing, and has been used by many Hindus through the eons.

You did make a lot of people worried. However, after learning that you are safe, we allow you to go on such hikes once a week provided you take all provisions with you or go to a place where water and food is available when you want it. ;)

Times have changed, Satyam. Today I would not (edited) dare to go in woods alone in Uttarkhand as our rishis used to do. There is so much (edited) of crime. 25 years ago it was not like that. I used to go on my treks alone.

The main problem is wild animals. Elephants, leopards, wild boars and snakes are pretty common here, I had few encounters with them in past. Leopards do not attack humans normally but Elephants aren't too friendly.

Namaste,

That is true, but we have also many stories of yogi/rishis encountering wild animals, criminals and even yakshas and asuras while meditating or conducting Yagnas in forests, that did not seem to stop them, the forests were never deemed a safe place, but a place to get lost in and find ones own self, What i was observing was the attitude and reaction of people to consider wondering into the forest/jungle/woods/wilderness is something to be concern of, which is valid and ok, but this could have nothing to do with wild animals or criminals, but more to do with getting lost or injured from a fall ect. So i think the concept of uncertainty (of getting lost into the woods) plays a greater role for concern rather then wild animals or getting robbed. I observe that the "Woods" itself is of concern and not whats in the woods.

While judging from various stories our Rishis/Yogis, they still went out (and some still do) to the Forests, because i assume to them the risks were not greater then the reward, and the forest was itself not viewed as a dangerous place but the concern was of what is In the forest (Animals/Robbers/Rakshasa ect).

I could be wrong but this was just my observation.

Regarding the safety of any forest, surely forests vary. There are no elephants or leopards in Northern Canada, yet the mosquitoes or blackflies may eat you alive. As for retreats, some retreat centers (in particular Buddhist ones) actually offer up such things as silence retreats. That's another option.
