Sūrya namaskāra without the āsanas?

Due to my mobility problems as we've discussed (btw, at temple I bit the bullet and sit in a chair near the wall when necessary, and stand), I have always wanted to perform the Sūrya Namaskāra. Clearly, the poses are out of the question. About the only poses that would not have me going into spasms (literally) is the anāhata and vishuddha. Has anyone ever heard of or thought about just reciting the namaskārs? Or is there just no point?

Everything can be done in the mental realms only. It takes substantial concentration, but it CAN be done, even the asanas. Visualisation is a powerful technique. It varies from partial visualisation, (like not actually being outside, or on a cloudy day), to some, to entirely. Mantras can all be said full out with volume, in a whisper, or totally silently. The key is attention. Even doing it full out with all the asanas etc, but your mind is on your job, your troubles, etc. then its not so good. Not harmful, just not so good.

Thanks I thought so, that without the physical aspect it might just take a little more work to concentrate. Not unlike japa; it's easy to become distracted.

I would say take it slow and find a good Hatha Yoga teacher someone in the vine yoga tradition would be great to help

I've been trying for years to find a teacher. There are none in the area. :(

You can do partial stuff ... on your own. Get a chart or video showing it. (It's on line.) Then just do however much that old physical body is able, and don't push it, or injury may have you 'progressing in the wrong direction to less flexibility rather than more. Over 6 months or so (on a daily basis) you will surely notice some change. Even itf it's on how far you can bend froward from a standing position. If you can get your hands to your knees without bending your knees, it's a start. You need prisoner pyjamas with horizontal stripes, and put pencil marks on how far much lower you get.

I have the chart of asanas, and I can do a couple of them partially. I can definitely bend forward with my hands to my knees. My ortho surgeon said that was very good for 6 months. Basically everything I do in day-to-day life is a stretching exercise. I was proud of myself and hit a milestone of being able to reach forward enough to put my sock on without using the sock-donner. Simple pleasures for a simple mind. :)

Once again, please be careful. Don't overdo it. If my old bones get dislodged, I do not think the doctors will be able to put them back in place.
