Ok, So Sunstone has a phobia about cats. I don't get it. There cute and cuddly, but hey, a Phobia is not supposed to make sense. Mine has always been spiders. Cant stand the alien little @#$@!#. When I was a child I was afraid to even get close enough to step on them, sure that they would dodge my foot and run up my pant leg. But at the same time I realize that they play a crucial part in the ecosystem. So please help me overcome my phobia. Any suggestions?

Get a bigger one! :)

After one of my sisters moved to Montana, she informed me she had joined a hiking group, and had discovered a way to get rid of her fear of snakes. She had replaced it with fear of grizzly bears.

Try handling spiders. Most spiders are not quick to bite. I've handled many species and have never been bitten (wolf spiders, grass spiders, garden spiders, jumping spiders and tarantulas). I used to have a bad spider phobia, but it's much better now. Don't just grab them or hold them between your fingers, let them walk around freely.

me and my mate. I help people overcome arachnophobia
Gave that one to a stranger cuz she loved it so much. :)

Nice Tarantula in the top video. What part of the country is that. Is the tarantula an Aphonopelma chalcodes, or Hentzi?

Clinical hypnosis might help.

Gradual exposure to spiders after taking propranalol (you -- not the spider) should accustom you to them, while the propranolol blocks the catecholamines that would normally induce the panic.

I've thought about that for my one true phobia, fear of heights. The spider thing was a childhood phobia that I have overcome. This really is a 'just for fun' thread that I started in the spirit of Sunstones cats thread. When I was a kid though I was literally terrified of spiders like the Brown Recluse (I was even bitten by one once). Strangely though I always thought tarantulas were cool. Thanks to everyone who has shared there tarantula pics and video. Would love to see more.

The trantula on the top is from Oklahoma. The Brazilian pink salmon bird eater is from Brazil and it's is the second largest spider in body weight and the third largest in leg span in the whole world , however the one I had there was a smaller male

Never asked if it was Hentzi but sure is pretty :)

....oddly enough...you know how there are good people, honest people, , ignorant, and violent people in every race? That goes with spiders too.

That was a Chilean Rose-hair you saw biting me (via pm) which are usually the nicest spiders you will ever get your hands on.

On the same token...I have had a baboon tarantula (that are so aggressive most pet shops don't sell them) so tame I could put it in my mouth.

My pink Salmon bird eater was allegedly agressive according to the pet shop peeps. It was the nicest thing ever. I tried to make it bite me and it wouldn't.

I know what you mean. Generally the old world tarantulas are nasty tempered. Maybe since they dont have hairs to flick off there backs as a first line of defense they go straight to biting. My exexperience with the rose hairs and Mexican red knees etc. Is friendly docile spiders, but there's always that one, like your friend that latched on to your finger.

A phobia is an irrational fear, I don't think that definition applies to things like flying and spiders, I have a healthy fear of both!

I used to have a mild phobia of heights. Vertigo, etc.
I just kept pushing the boundaries of it as much as I could over time, and I gradually became desensitized. Took mucho time, but I kept it pretty casual, and it wasn't an extreme phobia to start with.
