Yeshua on marriage:

I have a question. Could someone quote in scripture where Yeshua explicitly says something about marriage? Please do not quote any of Paul's letters. I dont find them to be valid :) He never met the guy. I'd like to see exactly what Yeshua's words were on marriage.

Off the top of my head...Jesus does reiterate the ten commandments in the NT...so we know that we aren't to cheat on our spouses. :)

Be back later...if someone doesn't beat me to it...:)

AAAHHH...

I found something already in Matthew...

Check out Matthew 5:27-30...this reiterates that we are not to commit adultery and that adultery isn't necessarily physical.

And this is Matthew 5:31-32

"Furthermore, it has been said "whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery."

I don't know if you're looking for anything in particular...

1) *nods* But what is marriage to Yeshua? A piece of paper with a legal stamp?

2) isn't that a bit harsh?

Matt said:
3 ¶ The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to aput• away his wife for every cause?

4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put• asunder.

7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing• of divorcement, and to put her away?

8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth badultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

10 ¶ His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

6 - This is kind of what I'd like to know about. If marriage is between a man, a woman and God, and Yeshua said that this is all anyone requires, why do people need to be married in a church?

In short,
1641 "By reason of their state in life and of their order, [Christian spouses] have their own special gifts in the People of God."147 This grace proper to the sacrament of Matrimony is intended to perfect the couple's love and to strengthen their indissoluble unity. By this grace they "help one another to attain holiness in their married life and in welcoming and educating their children."148

Something you cannot get at your local store or by any civil bureaucracy. If you want to get married, let the Father bless it toward good.

Hope that helps,
~Victor

Nope, but I believe He certainly holds to such a stance. It's indirect communication thru flawed men.

It's from the Cathecism of the Catholic Church....They usually note all the sources on the bottom. You want me to fetch them?

Does the Bible disapprove of divorce to the extreme? Would he still want a woman to stay with a man who was abusive in some way?

I don't think so.

Is there anything in the Bible about it? And if not, how does the church decide what is and what isn't a good reason for divorce?

Darn good question. One that I couldn't possibly answer without an individual person and particular case. It all depends on the circumstance which the Church looks into. No details are noted in the Bible to my knowledge.

We believe marriages are recognized by the laws of the land, by obtaining a marriage license, and any other ceremony performed after that, is not binding for eternity, but only for time, unless performed in an LDS temple, therefore it makes no difference where the ceremony is performed, or even if there is a ceremony, because it's not recognized by God, in the eternities to come.
