If it doesn't have the "obvious" composers that are more accessible, people don't show up. Oh well, it's their loss!

...and that of the composers, who can't get paid until they're dead and proper and might be considered worthy of attention.

funny you should mention percussion pieces, i was just listening to steve reich's 'drumming' reading this thread.

Now that I think about it, I do play a weird(ish) "instrument" (of sorts) other than my vocal cords: the bodhran. And by play I mean I can keep a rhythm on it, and not much else. You don't see bodhrans much outside of Irish music and dance circles... and Renaissance Festivals.

You can become the percussionist of your own buttocks. How's that for a unique instrument? "And for the grand finale ... *FAAAAAAAAAAAAARTTTTT!!!*

:D

Double bass technique becomes double cheek technique
Drumrolls become bumrolls
Blast beats become fart beats

I play the Violin (8 years), Cello(6 years), Viola(6 years), Guitar(2 years) and some piano (2 years). All in that order. If you wanted to start on any stringed instrument I suggest your start with the violin. Every stringed instrument that follows is so much easier to learn. It is extremly fun once you learn. If you can make it past the first year in playing the violin, I think you will make it.

I play the guitar(electric) mostly for fun, but I'm also in a band which is another reason I play.

as for a strange instrument....

I play both guitar and bass, and I have played them in the same band. I've auditioned for a few bands with my bass, but my style is either really agressive, or very dark. Neither of which are very popular in the area. I was offered the bass spot for a UU/Christian metal group that did get signed to a one year/one album contract, under Wind-up I think, and even though I am friends with all the band members, I declined. Mainly because I am not a Christian, it just didn't seem right to jump in on thier sucess.

As always, I was indecisive. I once owned several instruments, mostly woodwind. Sometimes, even other people would recognize the tunes I was playing. My favourite was the classical spanish guitar, and and I didn't do too badly with it.

Then, I sold most of them to finance my first (almost) real computer: the Microbee. I got some USD 1300 for the 4 flutes, 2 Bflat clarinets, 1 alto clarinet, an oboe etc. That was almost enough for this fantastic box, featuring the lightning speed of 3.375 MHz (three point three seven five), 128 kB RAM (incredible!) and a mass memory!! no kidding!!! you could connect a tape recorder for long time storage!!!! (In those days, nobody knew how to spell "disk(ette)".)

After my stroke, my left hand and me very often have dissimilar views on what to do. So now (if not before) you know what causes any unedited typos.

An instrument I'd really love to own is the contrebass sarrusophone. The Musical Instruments Through the Ages by Anthony Baines describes its sound as "slightly suggestive of the Jurassic fauna".

Not being able to find one outside of a museum in Brussels, I plan to have a French bassoon (not even a contrebassoon) refurbished.

I can play a recorder. "Why on earth would anyone want to play that?" you ask. I was forced to learn it for music class in fifth grade. The stupid thing has been in a box in my closet ever since.

Weird intruments?
The Triangle or The Cow Bell.

"I got a FEVER! And the only prescription........is more COW BELL!"

ROTFL I will never listen to Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" the same ever again after that SNL skit - one of the funniest in years. :D

I play piano. I took lessons for 8 years, and can play many classical pieces, although not nearly as good as I used to when I was regularly practicing.

Unusual instruments? The rainstick comes to mind.

Although I must concede to Mister T with bringing up the cow bell. :)

Peace,
Mystic
