The missing Kingdom

e.r.m.

Church of Christ
Jesus said His Kingdom was FROM another place not IN another. It is coming FROM Heaven to rule on earth. When He said His kingdom is not of this world He means it is not designed and run by the people of this world. It will be run by God but will be on earth when Jesus returns. Which is the next point. Jesus said He is coming back to earth but nobody believes it. They think they are going to Heaven to be with Him. Satan has really clouded people's minds so they do not see or believe the truth of what Jesus said
Whether or not Jesus will set up an earthly kingdom someday is not my concern. That's not what he was talking about in Matthew 4:23. The kingdom was about repentance. One needed to repent to get ready for the kingdom. Luke 17:21, the kingdom is within you. John 3:3, 5 One has to be born of water and Spirit in order to enter the kingdom. This is the kingdom that came, the good news that the kingdom was near, the kingdom spoken about in Revelation 1:5, 5:10.

the kingdom is not preached because most ministers do not understand it. Jesus said He is coming back to earth to set up His kingdom. His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives which is on earth. He will sit on the throne of David which is on earth. He will be King of Kings which means He will rule all earthly kingdoms. No one preaches it beause they do not understand or believe it.
Where exactly did Jesus say He was coming back to set up His kingdom?

Jesus spoke so much about the kingdom.
A phrase he used often was "The kingdom of heaven is like..."
The fish, the weeds, the tenants, the seed, the pearl, etc.

The apostles (including Paul Acts 20:25, 28:23, 31) spoke much about the kingdom of God. I can come up with a number of scriptures.

Yet, with as much attention given to it in the NT, in my experience the gospel of kingdom rarely gets spoken of off the pulpit. I stress "in my experience". I obviously won't claim to have been everywhere and seen everything. In my experience, the groups I've heard mention it the most are Churches of Christ, JWs (although I disagree with their view on what the kingdom is), and spanish speaking churches of whatever belief system "El Reino de Dios". I'm not asking specifically to discuss what the kingdom is, but if others have had the same experience not being taught or preached about the gospel of the kingdom, and if so, what you think the reason for it is.

Thank you.
Hi e.r.m.,

Good topic! I'm glad you brought it up.

It seems to me that I hear a lot from the tv evangelists and pretty much all evangelicals in general that Jesus is coming to set up an earthly kingdom. So in that regard, the kingdom is being preached.

I disagree with this take on the kingdom. I have studied this topic in depth, and according to the Scriptures, the kingdom is here NOW.

The kingdom is the ecclesia, the church. It is the reign of God in Christ. It is a worldwide, spirutual institution. It describes those who belong to God, who have been redeemed from their sins and now live in fellowship with Him. Christ is our King; we are His citizens.

When Jesus comes again, He is coming to judge the world, not to set up an earthly kingdom. At that time, He will turn the kingdom over to His Father.

Meanwhile, all things are under Jesus' authority.

The time will come when we will leave this physical world behind and enjoy the fullness of the heavenly kingdom, but for now we are living on earth as foreigners or sojourners.

Blessings,

Katie

Hello Paul,

I hope you don't mind my jumping in here. You ask two good questions.

First, the kingdom is the realm and reign of God in the person of Jesus Christ.

It seems as though Luke 17:21 can have two meanings, depending on which version you read.

First, "the kingdom of God is within you" (KJV) can mean that it is in your heart. We know, however, that when Jesus said this, the kingdom was not in the heart of the Pharisees at that moment.

Other versions (NASB) say "in your midst," or "among you" rather than within you. I take this to mean that the kingdom, or rule and reign, was in the person of Jesus Christ. This is further supported by Jesus' words in Luke 11.

20 But if I am casting out demons by the power of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.

Either way you interpret the verse, it is obvious that Jesus is speaking of a spiritual kingdom, rather than a physical one. Jesus also says the kingdom has arrived. I assume you would agree that Jesus was casting out demons by the power of God.

I know we are a minority but a few of us still believe there is a God who makes His truth known to people with an open mind who are willing to listen. Those who have already decided there is no God or who do not wish to listen to His truth will never understand because there minds are closed. We do not need a priest or minister either because the religions of this world are influenced by Satan. God said His church would be small and hard to find. the large churches with millions of members all over the world do not seem small and hard to find so I eliminate them right away. Most churches believe that God's kingdom is in Heaven and people go there. God says His kingdom will be on earth and Jesus is coming here to rule over it. that is the answer to the missing kingdom. it does not exist yet. it will begin when Jesus returns to earth to set up and rule the Kingdom of God here on earth
I'm afraid Jesus and the NT writers would disagree with you. The kingdom is here now.

I think alot of churches dont understand this topic at all. Only because most believe in heaven going at death and that's where you will stay. The Kingdom or "coming Kingdom" in the bible will be an actual Kingdom "set up" by Christ at his return. So many verses to list on that topic, esp in the OT. Daniel 2, Zech 8-14, so many. The bible is about God. And what He wants to do with us and the earth is to fill the whole earth with His Glory. That hasnt happened yet, but it will. It will be a wonderful time on earth. Everything will change at Christ's return.

What do you make of this verse from Luke 11?

Great question. Jesus is part of the coming kingdom. They could say the kingdom is here or amounst you because he is going to be the main focal point of it when he returns. They couldnt say that before he was born. The miracales that he did was a taste of what the kingdom age would be like. Look at all of the parables. They were about the coming kingdom or what the kingdom was going to be like. Scripture also tells us that it is in our hearts. It has to be. We need to want it more than anything. We need a vision to see ourselves there.

Daniel 2 says that he will "set up" a kingdom that will go over the whole world. You have Isaiah 24, Isaiah 2, Jeremiah 30 +, Zech chapters 8-14

Christ is to reign for ever on David's re-established throne (Luke 1:32,33), i.e. he will have David's place and position of rulership, which was in Jerusalem. As Christ will reign from Jerusalem, this will be the capital of the future Kingdom. It is in this area that a temple will be built (Eze. 40-48). While people will be praising God at various places world-wide (Mal. 1:11), this temple will be the focal point of the world's worship. Nations "will go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles" around the temple in Jerusalem (Zech. 14:16).

Isaiah 35:1-7 contains a matchless prophecy of how infertile land will be changed, resulting in an aura of joy and happiness almost oozing from the land, due to the easier and more spiritual way of life of those who work it: "The wilderness...shall be glad...the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It shall...rejoice even with joy and singing...for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. And the parched ground shall become a pool". Even the natural aggression between the animals will be removed: "the wolf and the lamb shall feed together", and children will be able to play with snakes (Is. 65:25; 11:6-8).

So many other verses that tell us that it "will come' at his return. If we say the kingdom is all ready here, then we have to throw out all of the others verses in scripture that tell us that it is coming.

Hi Paul,

I'm glad you asked. :) I will answer your question, but...

Let me begin by asking you where in Acts 1 is a physical earthly kingdom mentioned? For that matter, where in the gospels does Jesus ever talk about a physical, earthly kingdom?

I understand your interpretation of prophesy, but my question is about Acts 1 and the gospels, not the prophetic books, which have numerous interpretations, depending on who you talk to.

Now to answer your question...

I believe we need to ask ourselves why the apostles asked Jesus the question...

“Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”

Let's look at the immediate context of the question:

1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. 3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. 4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said,“you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

And also at Luke's words in chapter 24.

44 Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.48 “You are witnesses of these things.49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Considering both passages, what do you think was in the minds of the apostles when they asked Jesus if it was at this time He was restoring the kingdom to Israel? Are they thinking of a physical, earthly kingdom? Not according to the context, they weren't. They understood the kingdom to be a spiritual one just as Jesus had taught them (John 18:36, Luke 11:16-20, Luke 17:20-21).

Consider this. Jesus, according to Luke 24:45, opened the minds of the apostles to understand the Scriptures. In Acts 1:3, we are told that Jesus spent 40 days teaching them all about the kingdom. This tells me they knew all there was to know about the kingdom, except for WHEN the kingdom would be restored.

In Luke 24:49, Jesus tells His apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit who would clothe them with power from on high. In Acts 1:5, Jesus tells His apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the promised baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Why would Christ’s disciples ask about the restoration of the Kingdom immediately after Jesus spoke to them concerning the Promise of the Father? Clearly, the Promise has some connection to the restoration of the Kingdom! That is what the context tells us. One would have to ask, why would they disregard Jesus' instruction concerning a spiritual Kingdom, and suddenly bring up an earthly kingdom, one which Jesus never spoke about to them before?

It is with the promise to be clothed with power from on high, and the promise to be baptized with the Holy Spirit in mind that the apostles ask the infamous question. Luke tells us at the beginning of verse 6, "So when they came together they were asking Him..."

In other words, the beginning of verse 6 tells us that the question the apostles asked is based on their previous conversation with Jesus.

Unlike you and the Jews of Jesus' time, the apostles understood that the kingdom Jesus taught them about was a spiritual one and not a physical, earthly and political one.

The disciples were quite aware of the Kingdom Jesus intended to restore. They knew it was spiritual in nature. However, they were not aware of when this restoration would take place. Their question was about timing.

Jesus had taught His apostles that at some time in the future they would be baptized in the Holy Spirit. This baptism would allow them entry into the Kingdom. The restoration of God’s people would begin on Pentecost when three thousand would be baptized into the Kingdom. Jesus said,

“Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God!” (John 3:5)
.

The apostles understood that when the Holy Spirit was poured out, God’s Kingdom would undergo restoration. They just didn't know WHEN that would happen.

So how does Jesus answer the apostles question?

And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority. But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:7-8).

Jesus tells them it is not for them to know WHEN the kingdom would be restored. But He does reinforce what He has been telling them all along. It is not for you to know the WHEN, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses unto the whole earth.

The restoration of the kingdom of our Lord began on Pentecost, when Christ translated 3000 believers into His restored kingdom. It came through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The restoration of the kingdom continues to this day when an obedient believer is born again of water and the Spirit. The Lord adds him/her to His kingdom.

Hi moorea,

Praying you are well!

There are problems with what you said above.

Jesus said, "But if I am casting out demons by the power of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you." (Luke 11:20)

HAS ARRIVED! NOT WILL ARRIVE!

Should I believe you or Jesus? Jesus said that if he was casting out demons, then the Kingdom had arrived. You say the Kingdom did not arrive. You are contradicting what Jesus said.

I agree that there is a future, eternal aspect to the kingdom. The Scriptures bear that out.

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power.

But you consistently deny that there is a present aspect to the kingdom, even though there is ample evidence that says the kingdom of our dear Lord is here now. Christians are being translated into it daily when they are born of water and the Spirit (John 3:5).

Colossians 1
13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Daniel 2 says that he will "set up" a kingdom that will go over the whole world. You have Isaiah 24, Isaiah 2, Jeremiah 30 +, Zech chapter
Yes, and a thorough study of all the Scriptures in the Bible, both OT and NT, will cause you to conclude that the kingdom did spread over the whole world. It is a worldwide spiritual institution just as Jesus said.

I would ask you this. Where in the gospels does Jesus say the kingdom would be a physical, earthly one?

It seems pretty clear to me that Jesus teaches His kingdom is of a spiritual nature (John 18:36, Luke 11:16-20, Luke 17:20-21).

Your all ready going into this thinking that there will be no real kingdom. And it is already here, in your hearts or something like that....
Scripture is clear that it will be a real kingdom. Thy kingdom come... And because of this, your reading and making the verses into your theology.

So is the kingdom a "spiritual" one? Yes, it is from God, not man. Jesus represents the coming kingdom, he will be king of the kingdom at his return. Will the "kingdom' be a real kigndom? Yes, I already showed you verses through out the bible on that. Plus, all of the Apostles knew that too. They knew it was going to be the kingdom of Israel restored to a perfect kingdom. God was there king in the past, it was a imperfect Kingdom. Jesus will restore that at his return. He will rule from Jerusalem forever and ever.

Hi moorea,

Thank you for responding.

I see you didn't answer my question. So here it is again.

Where in the gospels does Jesus say the kingdom would be a physical, earthly one?

I agree with you that the kingdom is a reality. It's a spiritual reality. It is present in the world right now, exercising its tremendous power. It also has a future spiritual reality.

Paul wrote that every one who is born again has thereby been transferred into the kingdom of the Son of God’s love (Col. 1:13). If Paul and the Colossian Christians were already in the kingdom of Christ, how can you deny that the kingdom is here?

You say the kingdom is spiritual because God gave it. I agree with you. But that's not the only reason we can say it is spiritual.

Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world." John 18:36. The kingdom originated in heaven. To be sure, Jesus described the origin of His kingdom, and it is the origin that determines its nature. The kingdom is spiritual, not physical.

You say Jesus WILL BE King of the kingdom when He returns. JESUS IS KING NOW! Make no mistake about it. Jesus has a kingdom. He said He did. And if He has a Kingdom, He is King. His kingdom is not of this world; it is other worldly.

John 18:37
Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

Being spiritual, the kingdom of God can only be promoted and defended by spiritual means. This spiritual means is the Word of God (2Cor. 10:3-5).

The definition of the kingdom of God in Romans 14:17 proves the kingdom to be spiritual, not physical: “The kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” These spiritual realities are what the kingdom essentially is. The kingdom of God is not earthly.

What you have closed your mind to is that the kingdom is spiritual by nature, and that it is present now. Jesus is King now. Jesus' own words show this. You continue to rely on your own private interpretation of prophecy even though it contradicts the plain words of Jesus and His apostles.

Though we may differ in our understanding of the kingdom, I ask God's blessings on you and your family. Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend. And don't work.....too hard! :)

ok simple question
what is the kingdom and how can it be within you?
The kingdom is what is was in the Old Testa/ment
Exodus 19:5-6 And now if you carefully obey me and keep my covenant, you are to be my special possession out of all the peoples, because the whole earth belongs to me, 6 but you are to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation to me.’ These are the words you are to declare to the Israelis.”

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people to be his very own and to proclaim the wonderful deeds of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Rev 1:6 and has made us a kingdom, priests for his God and Father, be glory and power forever and ever! Amen.

Revelation 5:9 They sang a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals, because you were slaughtered. With your blood you purchased people for God from every tribe, language, people, and nation. 10 You made them a kingdom and priests for our God, and they will reign on the earth.”

The kingdom, as referred to in Matthew 3:2 and Matthew 4:23, and Luke 9:27 is the reestablishment of God's people. John said
Matthew 3:8 Produce fruit that is consistent with repentance! 9 Don’t think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have father Abraham!’ because I tell you that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones!

and Jesus said

John 4:23 Yet the time is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. Indeed, the Father is looking for people like that to worship him.

Jesus said in Luke 9:27 some there would not taste death before they saw the kingdom of God come with power. That's not a government which in 2015 is still yet to come. John in Revelation said that it already happened. I agree with Katiemygirl that the kingdom is the people of God, but not only. Jesus, Paul, and Peter also referred to it in other ways, such as in God's will Matthew 11:12, Luke 11:20 and going to heaven Acts 14:22, 2 Peter 1:10-11. However, with regard to the prophecies, they are speaking to the reestablishment of God's people, which happened at Pentecost Acts 2:39. According to John 10:16, Matthew 28:19, and Acts 2:39, God was now opening up His kingdom to the whole world. Of course Jesus's sacrifice was necessary Hebrews 5:9, 9:16-17. The gospel is therefore the good news that, not only the Jews, but all can enter God's kingdom and be a people of God, and God sent Jesus, His only begotten Son, as the sacrifice to make this possible. We must repent and be born of the water and the Spirit Matthew 3:2, 4:17, John 3:5, Acts 2:38, to enter.

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people to be his very own and to proclaim the wonderful deeds of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

With regard to the kingdom being within you/in your midst, I think it's along the line of Ephesians 1:13 and 2 Timothy 2:19 "...The Lord knows those who belong to Him...". The kingdom of God being within you or in your midst is a spiritual kingdom distinct from an external government or military kingdom.

I believe the good news of the kingdom isn't preached or taught because it goes beyond the scope of the d,b,r.

how would you also reason matthew 25:31 when it speaks of the kingdom?
John 5:27-29 and he has given him authority to judge, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Don’t be amazed at this, because the time is approaching when everyone in their graves will hear the Son of Man’s voice 29 and will come out—those who have done what is good to the resurrection that leads to life, and those who have practiced what is evil to the resurrection that ends in condemnation.

John 12:47-48 If anyone hears my words and doesn’t keep them, I don’t condemn him, because I didn’t come to condemn the world, but to save it. 48 The one who rejects me and doesn’t receive my words has something to judge him: The word that I’ve spoken will judge him on the last day,

Matthew 24:30-31
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all ‘the tribes of the land will mourn’ when they see ‘the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven’ with power and great glory.
31 He’ll send out his angels with a loud trumpet blast, and they’ll gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to another.”

Matthew 25:31
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels are with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.

is talking about the rapture and judgement.

I believe those gathered who asked Jesus this question were still thinking Jesus was going to free Israel from the Romans and grant its autonomy.
