Basilicas or Temples

Provo Temple: Ugliest building EVER!

I hope I don't offend anyone with that statement, but I almost believe it. Once I heard, however, that it's supposed to represent a cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night I learned to tolerate it.

It's not the prettiest of ones, but I haven' seen the inside, so I can't judge how that looks.

I dunno - Ogden's pretty bad too (since they are practically identical).

The fire and cloud symbology kinda went away when they made the pillars white - but I think they look a bit better the way they are now.

They've actually redone the outside and got rid of the orange spire. To tell the truth I grew to like it eventually - especially after the symbolism was explained to me. It looked good against the mountains in the background.

Now it has a white spire and an Angel Moroni on top. It does look better. They are also tearing up the grounds and putting in a bunch of fountains and landscaping in the front.

That's right. Not even every member of the Church can enter the Temple. You have to have a Temple Recomend to enter the Temple, and you get one of those through an interview process with local leaders.

Anyone can go onto the grounds, though, and I think most of them have a Visitors Center where you can learn more about the church.

Greetings!

You will forgive me, I trust, if I prefer our seven Baha'i temples to either basilicas or other temples! :)

We Baha'is currently have seven of them in the world (soon to be eight), basically one per continent. Each one has a unique design (all of which share nine sides and a dome). And of course, they're open to the public!

The best-known one is our New Delhi Baha'i temple, commonly known as the "lotus temple." Interestingly, it's the single most-visited building in the world, with four million visitors a year (around 13,000 every day). It's pictured below; enjoy! :)

You can see our other temples at www.bahai.org and other sites....

Best, :)

Anyone is allowed inside before they are dedicated. After they are dedicated only members of the church with temple recommends are allowed in. I think there are a few reasons for this. First, having traffic through the temple would disrupt the religious ceremonies. Second, we believe that these buildings are literally the house of the Lord and that some level of worthiness is required to enter his house.

Some temples have lobbies that people can go in. The Portland Temple also has a garden inside the temple than anyone can visit. You just can't get pass the recommend desk.

I was wondering what people generally think are more Beautiful, Roman Catholic Basilicas or LDS Temples. I personally like Basilicas better ;), but i find temples to be Beautiful. So tell me why you picked your decision and where you would like to build one. For me Honolulu Hawaii
I don't think you can really compare the two. They are entirely different in archetecture and serve different purposes. I've been in a handful of Catholic cathedrals and in St. Peter's basilica and they were gorgeous, but most of the LDS temples I've been in were beautiful, too.
