The Protestant Reformation, after all, gave us extremists who wanted to purify the faith by purging it of heretical elements, both within Protestantism and the Counter-Reformation, not so far a cry from the Sunni extremists calling for sectarianism and jihad.

Yes, that's a fair point. Reformation may be the wrong word, but it does need to change and come into the modern world.

I have pointed out elsewhere the similarities between the Englsh and Iranian Revolutions, and the Commonwealth and the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is looking very like a re-run of Western Christendom's Reformation and Wars of Religion. They were a neccessary evil without which there coud have been no Enlightenment. The various Orthodox Christian Churches didn't go through such and you can see the difference that made in the Balkans and Russia. It is why Putin doesn't grok Democracy and Human Rights. It is not in his marrow.
