Hymns

Ok, I'm not a Christian, and don't attend a conventional Christian church any longer, but I did grow up going to the Church of Christ. So many of the hymns we used to sing on a regular basis are part of my childhood, even if they mean something different to me today.

But I'm curious, what are some your favorite Christian hymns?

I too am not Christian, but we just did a nice song in choir that I like:

(Song of Mary)
My soul doth magnify the Lord
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior
for He hath regarded the lowliness of His handmaiden.
For behold from henceforth;
all generations shall call me blessed;
for He that is mighty hath magnified me,
and holy is His name.
And His mercy is on them that fear Him;
throughout all generations;
He hath showed strength with his arm.
He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats,
And hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things
and the rich He hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy has holpen His servant Israel,
as He promised to our forefathers Abraham and his seed forever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning
is now and ever shall be.
World without end,
Amen

Scratch that. We just did TWO songs in choir that I like. Here is another one.

(O Magnum Mysterium)

O magnum mysterium
et admirabile sacramentum
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum
jacentem in praesepio!
Beata virgo, cujus vicera meruerunt
portare Dominum Christum. Alleluia!
Domine audivi auditum tuum
et timui consideravi opera tua
et expavi in medio duorum animalium.

(O great mystery
and wonderous sacrament
that animals saw God born,
lying in manger!
Blessed virgin whose womb was worthy
to bear Lord Christ. Alleluia!
Lord, I heard your instruction
and I feared I considered your works
and I trembled in the midst of two animals.)

Prettier in the Latin, methinks...

women blakes jerusalem for me....

see my popst about jesus the teen ager...

i wrestle not with flesh and blood
my fight is with the one
who lost the keys of hell and death
to God's most precious son

one sleepless night of anguished prayer
i triumph over sin
one battle in the holy war
god's promised me to win!

'until that final day' Keith Green-songs for the sheperd (sparrow/pretty good records 1982)

actually, from a poem by Blake.

eternity

He who bends to himself a joy
Doth the winged life destroy:
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in Eternity's sunrise.

'Make My Life A Prayer To You'

Make my life a prayer to you
I wanna do what you want me to
No empty words and no white lies
No token prayers NO COMPROMISE

I wanna shine the light you gave
Thru your son you sent to save us
From ourselves and our despair
It comforts me to KNOW your really there

Chorus

Well i wanna thank you now
for being patient with me
It's so hard to see
When my eyes are on me
I guess i'll have to trust
And just believe what you say
OH YOUR COMING AGAIN
coming to take me away

I wanna die and let you give
Your life to me so i might live
And share the hope you gave to me
The love that set me free

I wanna tell the world out there
Your not some fable or fairy tale
That i've made up inside my head
You're God the Son you've risen from
the dead

I wanna die and let you give
Your life to me so i might live
And share the hope you gave to me
I wanna share the love that set me free

Stained Glass Keith Green

We are like windows
Stained with colors
Of the rainbow
Set in a darkened room
'Till the Bridegroom
Comes to shine thru

Then the colors fall around our feet
Over those we meet
Coloring all the gray that we see
Rainbow colours of assorted hues
Come exchange your blues
For his love that you see shining thru me

Chorus

We are his daughters and sons
We are the colorful ones
We are the kids of the King
rejoice in everything

My colors grow so dim
When I start to fall away from Him
But up comes the strongest wind
That he sents to blow
Me back into his arms again

And then all the colors fall around my feet
Over those I meet
Changing all the gray that i see
Rainbow colors of the risen Son
Reflect the One
the One who came to set us all free

Chorus

We are like windows
Stained with the colors
of the rainbow
No longer set in a darkened room
'cause the Bridegroom
Wants to shine thru you

And Your Bird Can Sing by John Lennon

You tell me you've got everything you want
And your bird can sing
But you don't get me
You don't get me
You say you've seen seven wonders
And your bird is green
But you can't see me
You can't see me

When your prized possessions start to tear you down
Look in my direction
I'll be 'round
I'll be 'round
When your bird is broken
Will it bring you down?
You may be awoken
I'll be 'round
I'll be 'round

You tell me that you've heard every sound there is
And your bird can sing
But you can't hear me
You can't hear me!
(Revolver1966)

I love Mary's Song, the Magnifcat, but that's already been said, so I also like "On Eagles Wings"

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord
Who abide in his shadow for life,
Say to the Lord, My refuge, my rock in whom I'll trust

(Chorus) And He will raise you up on Eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun
and hold you in the palm of His hand

The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you ne fear. Under His wing, your refuge, His faithfulness, your shield.

(Chorus)

For to the angels He's given a command, to guide you in all of you're ways
Upon their wings they will raise you up lest you dash your foot against a stone.

(Chorus)

The "cherokee national anthem" or Amazing Grace.

Sung on the trail of tears...
its very haunting when played on flute.

In cherokee:

I hope to someday be able to sing it from memory.

My favorite hymn has always been Be Thou My Vision. It's a really humble song of giving God the credit and the glory of being the Lord of my life.

hi maize,

nice post. its not often people talk about hymns anymore. it seems thesedays that the 'band' has to play loud to get closer to God.

my favorite hymn is 'When I survey the wonderous Cross'
im sure you will have heard of it.

yours in christ,
halfgospel

Both of these were done today in my church in honor of Mother's Day.

"Bring Many Names"

Bring many names, beautiful and good; celebrate in parable and story, holiness in glory, living, loving God: hail and hosana, bring many names.

Strong mother God, working night and day, planning all the wonders of creation, setting each equation, genius at play.: hail and hosana, strong mother God!

Warm father God, hugging every child, feeling all the strains of human living, caring and forgiving, till we're reconciled: hail and hosana, warm father God!

Old, aching God, gray with endless care, calmly piercing evil's new disguises, glad of new surprises, wiser than despair: hail and hosana, old, aching God!

Young, growing God, eager still to know, willing to be changed by what you've started, quick to be delighted, singing as you go: hail and hosana, young, growing God!

Great, living God, never fully known, joyful darkness far beyond our seeing, closer yet than breathing, everlasting home: hail and hosana, great, living God!

"Mother of All"

Mother of all, in every age, in every clime adored, by saint, by poet, and by sage, your praises high have soared.

Goddess of nurture and of love, all nature sings your care. In life's extravagance you prove the gift of giving fair.

O spirit of unfolding grace and deepest mystery, teach us compassion's gentle face and wisdom's mastery.

Teach us to cherish this proud earth, its fragile beauty praise, and for the dreams your joy gives birth, a hopeful future raise.

Lay down my dear brothers, lay down and take your rest
Oh won't you lay your head upon your saviour's breast
I love you, oh but Jesus loves you the best
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight

Lay down my dear brothers, lay down and take your rest
Oh won't you lay your head upon your saviour's breast
I love you, oh but Jesus loves you the best
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight

Walking in Jerusalem just like John (bid you goodnight, goodnight)
I remember right well, I remember right well (bid you goodnight, goodnight)
His rod and his staff shall comfort me (bid you goodnight, goodnight)
"A" for the ark, that wonderful boat (bid you goodnight, goodnight)
"B" for the beast at the ending of the wood (bid you goodnight, goodnight)
Well it eat all the children that would not be good (bid you goodnight, goodnight)
I'm walking in Jerusalem just like John (bid you goodnight, goodnight)
Walking in the valley of the shadow of death (bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight)

Lay down my dear brothers, lay down and take your rest
Oh won't you lay your head upon your saviour's breast
I love you, oh but Jesus love you the best
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
