I believe that it is racist to burn the Mexican flag as a form of protest against illegal immigration. While most illegal immigration comes through Mexico, they are not all Mexican. Additionally, illegal immigrants in this country come from all over the world, not just Mexico. To simgle out the Mexican nation and its flag to be representative of an entire population, is the very definition of racism.

By the way, I am against all flag burning as a form of protest. There are more cosntructive ways to protest, and I believe it to be disrespectful to the people of the nation the flag represents.

Also, I am strongly against illegal immigration.

How in the world can burning the national flag of Mexico be considered racist? What good is the term race when it is used so arbitrarily.

And why would anybody want to burn that flag in the first place? Who are they kidding?

I find flag burning extremely offensive, regardless of what nation it belongs to... though I would probably make an exception for the Nazi flag from WWII. I would ground my child and suspend all priviledges for at least a month, if I caught her doing it. Flag burning is not racist. Flag burning and ethnic slurs together are racist.

Well, if you find flag burning so offensive - why make an exception? Regardless of whether you agree with Nazism or not, is it still not an offensive act? By making exceptions, saying it's okay to do something you otherwise find offensive when done to other groups, isn't that sort of prejudice in it's own little way? It is at least a double standard.

Just for the record: I have absolutely no problem with flag burning.

Burning a flag symbolises the ideal of that society. It is more than just the people, it is the dream of what they should be. The ideal and dream behind the Nazi flag is just about as sinister and thoroughly wicked as you can get, thus I have no issue with burning it.

I understand that and I agree that Nazism is quite wicked, but I find it hypocritical to be opposed to burning all other flags because it's offensive, but find it okay to burn a Nazi flag.

It is, thankfully, a very rare occurance when a nation's ideals and dreams are so thoroughly evil. Exceptional evil presents exceptional circumstances to which exceptions can and should be made. Surely, even most peaceniks would agree it was right to go to war to bring Hitler down?

I agree, but isn't the argument often made that if one is against illegal immigration he or she is a racists?

One would expect a higher proportion of people who are anti-immigration to be racist, yes, afterall they are hardly likely to be pro-immigration. However, this fact is often blown out of proportion.

Racism is an irrational negative emotion towards another race or actions that are the result of said emotion. If burning the Mexican flag is the result of an irrational negative emotion towards a race, then yes it is racist. I really couldn't say whether the majority of people who spend their time on such activities harbour this type of feeling.

Wait Great Cal....Come back!

You didn't reply to my question.....about burning the flag and the death penalty.

You don't really think that's justified do you? I am mega curious.

Pleaaaaassse answer? :D

If you burned your own country's flag, that is like treason, YES, give those who burned their own country's flag the death penalty if death penalty is still practice in that country (NOT in CANADA:eek: )

Whilst I think that many would agree flag burning is childish, I wouldn't say it is racism. A flag represents a nationality, not a race.

Then what would you call objecting to people based on their national origin? Keep in mind that not all illegal immigrants are Mexican. Even the ones that cross the Mexican border are not all Mexican.

Race doesn't exist in reality, just in the minds of people. Racism is just a term used to describe irrational hatred of others based on things like national origin, culture, color of skin, ethnic background, religion, etc.

Xenophobia maybe?

Race doesn't exist in reality, just in the minds of people.

There are certain genes that biologically define race, so scientifically it does exist. What doesn't exist is racial superiority/inferiority, that is what is just in the minds of people.

What you are defining are biological variations, but what is interesting is that scientifically there are no genes or gene clusters that appear in all members of one group and not in any members of other groups. Most variations are within groups instead of between groups.

If there were genes that defined race, we would have Human sub-species; which would mean that people from one part of the earth could not mate with people from other parts of the earth and produce offspring. People have always been mobile, and shared their genes, this makes us more similar biologically.

Most biologist and anthropologist have long concluded that race is a social, cultural, and political concept based largely on superficial appearances.

In my youth I could never relate to Hispanic people being of a "race" of their own. The same goes for Jewish people. I'm still not so sure of it.

Racist, no. Poor taste and disrespectful, yes.
