Giving First Aid

My wife was taught first aid (well she volunteered herself for it) when she was working. One of the conditions was that she should have an insurance policy to cover her for carrying out first aid at work, because the company wanted to be free of worries of litigation.

I heard this morning that the local ambulance service is putting out on the internet small mp3 files to cover first aid basics (ie, heart attack victim is the most obvious).

Now I know how to do CPR and mouth to mouth, but I am also aware that, in doing CPR, it is quite possible to break someone's ribs. Doctors and first aiders are made aware that it is far better to have a couple of broken or cracked ribs than to be dead (which makes sense).

I just thought though, would any of you be worried about trying this on someone you saw had had a heart attack, and the heart had stopped ?

I reccently took a first aid day course and it was quite a lot to take in!

If it came to a real situation in which I had to implement what I had learned I would be terrified! I would be worried, but like you mentioned, its better to be alive with a few done in ribs than be dead.

Personally, I am going to do what I can for an injured person. If it results in a lawsuit later, than I will worry about that at the time. Not much blood to be squeezed out of this rock, anyway.

I have heard of people being sued for trying to help. I have also heard of people who did not choose to try and help being sued, so it seems to be pretty much the same either way.

Well, of course, to give the kiss of life is now laying oneself open; there are 'masks' available, but I can't see my thinking about the risks when presented with someone who is in trouble.

MOD POST: Just a quick note: RF does not condone, endorse or otherwise recommend any meathods of CPR. Individual opinions do not neccessarly reflect RF's position and anyone wishing to partipate in adminstering CPR is advised to seek the guidance and advice from the medical profession.

in some states a there is a law called the good Samaritan law, look it up in your state it is different in every state, it protects people that help and make mistake…

I've heard some states have or are considering 'Good Samartian' Laws that protect people who make a good faith effort to lend aid in an emergency. IMHO, anyone who sues someone who helped save his life is despicable scum...but that' s a topic for another thread.;)

Many years ago in high school health class, I took a course in CPR. I have never had to use it, and frankly, I'm not confident that I remember enough about it to save a life today.
