if someone were to be a christian, or a catholic, is it against their religion to drink? to smoke?

Buttercup said:I agree with this sentiment. There is nothing wrong with drinking. As long as it doesn't become a stubbling block and sidetrack you into a drunkard, dependent on alcohol.
Smoking is bad for you period. But, I don't see it as a 'sin' per se. Just something you should avoid for the sake of your body.
I personally don't see smoking pot as being any different than drinking. But the issue again is dependency. All things in moderation, including food.
