Wet Notebook horror...

Good advice here, nothing really to add except to re-iterate rice. I went that way once, and the computer recovered (48 hours roughly, I think).
Every time you try to turn it on, you risk serious damage though (as per Shad's explanation)

I just got back from a friends place who had a problem with their notebook. It simply did not turn on. It's only next door, so I trotted over and pressed the power button. Sure enough it didn't turn on. Unplugged the power cable, reinserted it, then checked the power bar connection and put the connector into another plug. Went and hit the power button and nadda, zippo...
It was then that I noticed the finger I had used to hit the power button was inexplicable wet on the very tip of my finger. Puzzled, I traced around the power button and indeed, somehow water had gotten on it. I grabbed a Kleenex and instantly it sucked up a silver dollar sized amount of water. Now I'm beginning to shiver.

Upend the notebook and water begins to drip, drip, drip out of the case... onto the desk.
I shook my head, and said to the unhappy human, "We will let it dry out for about 3 days and keep your fingers crossed. Once it is completely dry, it MIGHT turn on. Maybe...."

The notebook was shut down normally the evening before and there was a rainstorm last night and the location of the notebook is directly under a suspicious skylight. There was no signs of any leaks from the skylight however.

What say you RF's computer guru's? Do you think the beast is dead or could it live another day once it is dry? Also, how does one dry the innards of a sealed notebook. I'm not about to pop the case or anything like that. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I once spilled a big tumbler of water right on my laptop keyboard, about a pint and a half of liquid. I thought it was dead too but after leaving it in front of a space heater to dry out for a cpl hours the thing fired right up and I never had any (new) problems with it afterwards.

Well, I didn't do the rice thingy, but will remember that one in the future, and I am happy to report that the notebook is now alive and kicking. I fired it up yesterday and it went through a lot of self tests which had me a bit worried, but low and alas, it passed all the tests and everything seems just ducky. Thanks for all your ideas and stories folks.

I once dumped an 8 oz glass of orange juice on my keyboard and that puppy was FRIED... LOL

A relatively unknown historical fact:
Saturday Night Live was once funny.

Does anyone remember "The Pepsi Syndrome"?
(A parody of The China Syndrome.)
