The "Shiva is Tamasic" mentality.

Classification of Purana in three Guna-s is an interpolation made by Vaishnawa Groups otherwise such classification would have been mentioned in Itihasa and some primary Vaishnawa Purana-s like Bhagavata or Vishnu.

2. Some Vaishnava Puranas classify themselves as Sattvic and Shaiva Puranas as Tamasic. No such classification is found in non-Vaishnava Puranas.
Check the Matsya Purana. It has been quoted from that Purana by Ramanuja and Yamuna Muni. Adi Shankara has also accepted this classification. Besides, Shiva Puranas do contradict Vedas, so that's why they are Tamasic.

And besides, just because Shiva Purana is Tamasic (a fact that all Vedantins accept), doesn't mean Shiva is tamasic. I fail to see the correlation.

1) Ramanuja, Yamuna and countless others have quoted the Padma Purana as well as Matsya Purana to support the 3 guna classification.
2) Bhagavata and Vishnu Puranas are Vaishnava anyway and therefore a Purana like Shiva Purana contradicts it.

The importance of the Trimurti concept (Trimurti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) has been independently verified by me using the Chaldean Hebrew Numerological method of analysis (Numerology Help: The Chaldean-Hebrew Kabala Numerical Alphabet) which shows that it encapsulates the entirety of Nature from the Hindu perspective (I used this method because the Jewish people were also guided by Sri Krishna through Moses).

In my family my wife does Puja to Shiva & Krishna, My Mother to Lakshmi & Durga, My Father to Ram, Hanuman and Shiva, My Brother to Ganesh, Krishna and Murugan, My sister in Law is Arya samaji but she does Puja to all Deva and Devi, and I read only Hindu texts. We all do Puja to Shiva at Shivratri, Ram and Sita in Diwali, everyone does puja to Sat Narayan, we all go to Shiva Temple, Krishna temple and Devi Mandir. We all respect Buddha, my mother has a Jesus statue, my Son (2 yo) is a Atheist.

Now who is Shaiva, who is Vaishnava, who is Astika, Who is Tamasic, Who is Satvic?

Yes, Satya, I tend to forget that, because most of the immigrants here from Fiji are Indian Fijian. We have 2 temples in my city, and there are at least 2, maybe more in Vancouver, run by Indian Fijians.

In the Shiva Purana, Suta tells us of the Greatness of Lord Shiva. My definite take on this Greatness is that Shiva actually can EXHIBIT any one of the 3 Gunas… we may SEE it, but at the same He is beyond the Gunas. But He also has the ability to EXHIBIT any one of the 3 or else He would not be in terms of Suta “Great”! So Sage Shaunaka said, in the Kali Age many creatures will have demonic traits. But you see, “traits” (translation). In fact, even the creatures are innocent, though they exhibit traits.

Even certain Puranas have “traits”. For example, the Shiva Purana itself. A Purana does have specific traits, it can be emit like incense certain “traits”, these can be either:
Dharma, Moksha, Artha, or the Ultimate.
Now – here is where I am going to confuse some, but the Ultimate is not the same as the Supreme Brahman. The Shiva Purana exhibits the trait of the Ultimate. That means it delivers aspects of Dharma, Moksha, Artha all in one, but then leaves it up to you to go to the Supreme (or not).

These “fights” over Who is what Guna, does not bother me very much. Even individual Puranas have traits, but a trait is not the final definition. For example, of the manifestations of Shiva, I often admire Shiva in meditation in the Himalayas. This Shiva brings a lot of peace and calm for me. Yet, I also am a great devotee of an emanation called Bhairava as the naked bikshu with the skull cap begging bowl. This emanation frightens some. It does not bother me that some say “tamasic”. In some ways, I am glad some are a bit afraid. It makes me laugh.

As for Vishnu, I feel a feeling of goodness. So that is exhibiting Satvic, which is fine. Vishna also can exhibit at any moment any one of the Gunas. Or He may have 3 heads and exhibit all 3 at one time.

As for Brahma, I feel a strong sense of knowledge and learning, but also passion and creation. So that is exhibiting Rajasic, which is fine. Brahma also can exhibit at any moment any one of the Gunas. He once had 5 heads, much like a manifestation of Shiva Whom with 5 heads. Now He has four, and I think of the Four Vedas, actually I believe He “speaks” each of the Four today. From this comes great passion and creation actually, even though I stay to the Agamas, Puranas, and those Histories such as Ramayana.

Ramayana itself has traits of all the Gunas. Amazing, actually.

Once my Pundit Ji (Fijian Indian) was telling me a story of when he did a Puja for Indians (from India living in Sydney), and at the end they wanted to listen to some sloka from the Ramayan, Pundit Ji read from the part when Shri Ram meets Hanuman Ji. He said at the end one person raises his hand and says "Are you telling me Hanuman was from South India !, Where in the South? I thought he was light skinned?", Pundit Ji said that this is just one example of how petty some Indian Hindus have become. True story

I was like that once. So I looked to see if a God truly exists and if so the Nature and a name for that God. Now I do not worship any other gods other than Sri Krishna. And I do so only through following a truth path for that is what led me to this God who does not ask to be worshipped by any means other than the worship of truth.

So, do you mean that my Family is not worshiping the One True God???, or are they worshiping wrong "Gods", And as i don't believe in "God", does it mean am i a Atheist, like my son??

Your family members are all worshipping the gods that are right for them; you are doing the right thing in studying texts; I am doing my own thing in worshipping truth. Your son will make his own decision when the time comes. Each person is therefore satisfied with his or her outcome. The True Creator and Preserver God will decide what to do with each one of us.

Is this our version of Sunni v Shia but with no bloodshed?

in short No !

Existence of Vaishnavs and Shaivates has always confused me.

each tradition and sampradaya exists out of gratitude ind in rememberance of its progenitor , ...a good hindu does not feel the need to refute the validity of another sect only to honour his own and to live respectfuly with neibouring traditions , ...

to a Hindu there is no specific owner of the truth , no right of one person to hold truth where as another may not , ....truth is a realisation it canot be atained by birthright alone .
