LDS Christians - Who is your Jesus?

Endless

Before starting i would like to say that for my own benefit and also the benefit of LDS christians on this site, i would like to get to the bottom of this. So i would be grateful if LDS christians could have an input.

So the question for LDS Christians is, Who is your Jesus? I would like you to assume that i have no knowledge of Christianity, and hence an explanation of any terms etc.

Thanks :)

THE LIVING CHRIST
THE TESTIMONY OF THE APOSTLES
THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ two
millennia ago, we offer our testimony of the
reality of His matchless life and the infinite
virtue of His great atoning sacrifice. None other has had
so profound an influence upon all who have lived and
will yet live upon the earth.
He was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, the
Messiah of the New. Under the direction of His Father,
He was the creator of the earth. “All things were made by
him; and without him was not any thing made that was
made” (John 1:3). Though sinless, He was baptized to
fulfill all righteousness. He “went about doing good”
(Acts 10:38), yet was despised for it. His gospel was a
message of peace and goodwill. He entreated all to follow
His example. He walked the roads of Palestine, healing
the sick, causing the blind to see, and raising the dead. He
taught the truths of eternity, the reality of our premortal
existence, the purpose of our life on earth, and the potential
for the sons and daughters of God in the life to come.
He instituted the sacrament as a reminder of His great
atoning sacrifice. He was arrested and condemned on
spurious charges, convicted to satisfy a mob, and sentenced
to die on Calvary’s cross. He gave His life to atone for the
sins of all mankind. His was a great vicarious gift in
behalf of all who would ever live upon the earth.
We solemnly testify that His life, which is central to all
human history, neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded
on Calvary. He was the Firstborn of the Father, the Only
Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world.
He rose from the grave to “become the firstfruits of them
that slept” (1 Corinthians 15:20). As Risen Lord, He visited
among those He had loved in life. He also ministered
among His “other sheep” (John 10:16) in ancient America.
In the modern world, He and His Father appeared to the
boy Joseph Smith, ushering in the long-promised “dispensation
of the fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10).
Of the Living Christ, the Prophet Joseph wrote: “His
eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was white
like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the
brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the sound of the
rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah, saying:
“I am the first and the last; I am he who liveth, I am
he who was slain; I am your advocate with the Father”
(D&C 110:3–4).
Of Him the Prophet also declared: “And now, after the
many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the
testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!
“For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and
we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only
Begotten of the Father—
“That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds
are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are
begotten sons and daughters unto God” (D&C 76:22–24).
We declare in words of solemnity that His priesthood
and His Church have been restored upon the earth—
“built upon the foundation of . . . apostles and prophets,
Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone”
(Ephesians 2:20).
We testify that He will someday return to earth. “And
the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall
see it together” (Isaiah 40:5). He will rule as King of
Kings and reign as Lord of Lords, and every knee shall
bend and every tongue shall speak in worship before
Him. Each of us will stand to be judged of Him according
to our works and the desires of our hearts.
We bear testimony, as His duly ordained Apostles—
that Jesus is the Living Christ, the immortal Son of God.
He is the great King Immanuel, who stands today on the
right hand of His Father. He is the light, the life, and the
hope of the world. His way is the path that leads to
happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come.
God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is my older brother, and a figurative father because of my baptism.

He is the Creator and created this world under the direction of God the Father.

He is the Savior and Redeemer. He suffered for my sins so that I could be forgiven and overcome spiritual death. He died on the cross and was resurrected so that I could overcome physical death.

He is my advocate with my Heavenly Father.

He will be my judge.

Thanks SoyLeche.

You touched on who Jesus actually was in that answer - as well as what he did and why. But could you concentrate solely on who Jesus was?
You mention that he was the Son of God, the Great Jehovah of the old testament, can you go into a lot more depth on this? Not your own opinions, but what your doctrine teaches you.

Christ (a Greek word) and Messiah (a Hebrew word) mean “the anointed.” Jesus Christ is the Firstborn of the Father in the spirit (Heb. 1: 6; D&C 93: 21). He is the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh (John 1: 14; 3: 16). He is Jehovah (D&C 110: 3-4) and was foreordained to his great calling before the creation of the world. Under the direction of the Father, Jesus created the earth and everything on it (John 1: 3, 14; Moses 1: 31-33). He was born to Mary at Bethlehem, lived a sinless life, and made a perfect atonement for the sins of all mankind by shedding of his blood and giving his life on the cross (Matt. 2: 1; 1 Ne. 11: 13-33; 3 Ne. 27: 13-16; D&C 76: 40-42). He rose from the dead, thus assuring the eventual resurrection of all mankind. Through Jesus’ atonement and resurrection, those who repent of their sins and obey God’s commandments can live eternally with Jesus and the Father (2 Ne. 9: 10-12; 21-22; D&C 76: 50-53, 62).

Jesus Christ is the greatest being to be born on this earth. His life is the perfect example of how all mankind should live. All prayers, blessings, and priesthood ordinances should be done in his name. He is the Lord of lords, King of kings, the Creator, the Savior, and the God of the whole earth.

Jesus Christ will come again in power and glory to reign on the earth during the Millennium. At the last day, he will judge all mankind (Alma 11: 40-41; JS-M 1).

Summary of his life (in sequence of events): Jesus’ birth and mission were foretold, Luke 1: 26-38 (Isa. 7: 14; 9: 6-7; 1 Ne. 11). Was born, Luke 2: 1-7 (Matt. 1: 18-25). Was circumcised, Luke 2: 21. Was crucified, Matt. 27: 31-54 (Mark 15: 20-41; Luke 23: 26-28, 32-49; John 19: 16-30). Was resurrected, Matt. 28: 1-8 (Mark 16: 1-8; Luke 24: 1-12; John 20: 1-10). He touched on who Jesus actually was? What, exactly, are you looking for? Do you have some specific questions we might address, because I think you'd have found SoyLeche's response to be more than adequate had you been asking the same question of a "mainstream" Christian.

BIBLE DICTIONARY
CHRIST The anointed (Gk.) or Messiah (Heb.).
Jesus, who is called Christ, is the firstborn of the Father in the spirit and the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. He is Jehovah, and was foreordained to his great calling in the Grand Councils before the world was. He was born of Mary at Bethlehem, lived a sinless life, and wrought out a perfect atonement for all mankind by the shedding of his blood and his death on the cross. He rose from the grave and brought to pass the bodily resurrection of every living thing and the salvation and exaltation of the faithful.

He is the greatest Being to be born on this earth - the perfect example - and all religious things should be done in his name. He is Lord of lords, King of kings, the Creator, the Savior, the God of the whole earth, the Captain of our salvation, the Bright and Morning Star. He is in all things, above all things, through all things, and round about all things; he is Alpha and Omega, the first and the last; his name is above every name, and is the only name under heaven by which we can be saved.

He will come again in power and glory to dwell on the earth, and will stand as Judge of all mankind at the last day.

I can guarrentee SoyLeche that not a single person on this site will bother to read through those replies you put up with all the links. I fail to understand why you did this when i asked you in my last reply to go into more detail on Jesus being the Son of God and the Great Jehovah of the old testament.

This could have been done simply so that a person with no basis in Christianity would have been able to understand, however since you have posted the way you have, it would seem you are attempting to ridicule and disrupt the topic. I would ask if the administrators could prune the topic.

How on earth can you be so critical of SoyLeche's response? You specifically asked, "Can you go into a lot more depth on this? Not your own opinions, but what your doctrine teaches you." He couldn't possibly have provided you with a better tool for actually getting a handle on LDS doctrine. I'm sure he didn't intend for you to go to every one of these links, but instead of looking at the ones you personally have an interest in, you simply dismiss his entire effort. Any of the Latter-day Saints on this forum could have given you an explanation of what they believe Jesus Christ to be. Jonny actually did that. But if you want official doctrine -- not in our words, but in the words of the LDS Church leadership -- you've now got it at your fingertips.

I also asked what it is you are specifically looking for, and you didn't bother responding. What would it take to satisfy you? You don't want our opinions or interpretations, even though we have offered to give them to you. You say you want doctrine, but when we give you that, you don't like it either.

I'm going to attempt (as jonny already did) to tell you what I, as a Latter-day Saint, believe about Jesus Christ. I believe my understanding of who He is is in line with LDS doctrine.

Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God, and thus, God himself. He was with His Father in the beginning and, under His Father's direction, created "worlds without number," including our universe. He was the "firstborn among many brethren" (i.e. all of us) and was "the Lamb chosen before the foundation of the world," designated by our Father in Heaven to be the Savior of mankind. As the second person in the Godhead, He descended to earth, taking upon Himself a physical body, being born to a Virgin in the most humble of circumstances. He was the only person who has ever lived to have both a divine and a mortal parent. He lived a perfect life, absolutely free from sin. He obeyed His Father in all things, acknowledging His greatness and glory at all times. He established a Church before concluding His ministry, and appointed twelve men to oversee it in His absence. He consistently taught a gospel of love, mercy and forgiveness, and then in the most unselfish way conceivable to mankind, offered Himself as a ransom for our sins. He took upon Himself the guilt we had incurred and would incur and suffered in a way that we cannot possibly imagine, both in Gethsemane and on Calvary. After three days in the tomb, He was literally resurrected from the dead. He remained among His Apostles for an additional 40 days and then ascended to His Father and God, where He reigns with Him today. He is our advocate with the Father. He lives and loves us and is waiting to bring us home again.

Squirt, i admire your loyalty but you know as well as i do that what Soyleche posted up did not go into depth on what i specifically asked in that post, which was Jesus being the Son of God and the Great Jehovah of the OT.
It also did not require much effort - just copy and pasting. It was just to disrupt the topic - maybe to have a little fun and take the 'go into more detail' to the extreme. Such postings do not help anyone.

I also asked what it is you are specifically looking for, and you didn't bother responding.

Squirt, if you bothered to read on down a little bit in the very same post you quoted from, you would find specifically what i was looking for. Please don't critise me, i can't be responsible if you don't read what i write.

Please re-read my last post. I have edited it since I first posted it. Tell me if it is what you were looking for. I don't believe for one minute that it was SoyLeche's intention to "disrupt the topic." I'm sorry you didn't like what he posted, but you needn't have judged his sincerity.

We believe that the Lord of the Old Testament and the Lord of the New Testament were both Jesus Christ. He is the Lord of this world and has governed it from the beginning.

Oh get over it. You asked doctrine and he gave you exact doctrine. It seems that you don't actually want to know. They've answered you questions over and over again, what is it you want? :banghead3

Yeah, I gotta go with the LDS folks on this one, they put down everything they believe about Jesus and 95% of it is what 'mainstream Christianity' believes, too. While I believe we are adopted into God's family, and are in Christ as He is in the Father, I don't go as far as to say I am his spirit brother, for me, it seems to bring Christ down to a lower level, but that is just me, that's all. I am interested in something Soyleche mentioned and that was something about Jesus being foreordained to his greatest calling by the Grand Councils before the world was. Who and what comprise these Grand Councils of which you speak? And are these mentioned in the Bible? Thanks,
Mike
