Why do people enjoy attacking the Catholic church so much

I know there must be many different motivations, I am just curious why this is the last great, accepted predjudice.

Trinity,

Some do......... some people try to find fault in anything different that themselves.... but I would hesitate to say it is "accepted"....... at least not on this forum! :tsk:

Peace,
Scott

I don't think people really do but I admit there is some truth to it. If your Christian than the Catholic Church is your roots and the point I am maikng is they have a long history. It wasn't always something to be proud of either and I think many people today still associate the Cathilic Church to Christianity. However,

I know there must be many different motivations, I am just curious why this is the last great, accepted predjudice.

That statement has no truth to it at all.

I don't know if "enjoy" is the right word. Sometimes when we ask questions we aren't attacking we are trying to resolve. I agree with Scott and Pah, it's not allowed here.

Alright, my words may be a little harsh. But open your mind for a minute. Anyone can sling as much mud at Catholics and the Church as they like, and there is no repercussions. Try doing that to any other group and see how the media and the people (of that group and others) respond. :)

I hope you don't consider a discussion of the law to be "slinging mud"

I believe that it is a matter of misunderstanding. it is like people who attack gays. They merely attack because they don't understand the full concepts, only what was brought up in the ghettos or something.

Also, the Catholic bible is very easy to take out of context from..

I was thinking of Constitutional Law but it would have some appliciblity to natural law as well.

Which law in particular are you referring to? Not a type of law

Trinity,

I think you might be confusing someone (such as Pah) asking you to defend your position with outright persecution. Many people come onto this site from a background of surrounding themselves with like minded individuals. This is definitely the case for many of the fundamentalists we see here. These people have lived in a "bubble" where no one questioned what the man in the pulpit fed them each Sunday. Mind you, I am not saying that you are in this group (I don't know you well enough to make that leap), but I think you might be feeling a little of this effect.

When these people are first exposed to individuals that ask them to defend their statements, they take it as an assault on their belief system.

SOG is exactly right. As a matter of fact, I take more than a little glee in asking people that attack a given belief system from their own biased viewpoint to defend THEIR positions.

One thing going against the Catholic Church. It does not seem (to me - an admitted "outsider") that the RCC allows for any difference of opinion from its followers. In my opinion, this is exactly why Martin Luther led the flight to the Protestant religions. Obviously, they have the right to do this (it is their religion), but nobody bites back as much as someone that feels wronged.

I stated in the thread that probably promted this one that all US law is Constitutional Law - civil law, executive regulation, criminal law, contract law, and any other you can think of. Please don't confuse it with a particular legislative act. LAW not "a law".

I was referring to different disciplines in the legal field. Now for you to answer the question, to which law are you referring?

This question was not aimed at anyone. It is a much broader question, aimed more at the media than anything else. If I seem to be living in a box, pick up a copy of the New York Times or any other notoriously liberal paper and see if you can find any unwarranted attacks against the Catholic Church. Twisting of information. Spins on a story, for the only, apparent, cause as to promote some sort of an agenda or crusade against the Church. Again, this is not directed towards anyone here.

It still needs clarifying - I have no idea what you're talking about.

Trinity -

Perhaps I am unaware of this media bias because I am not Catholic. I go back to my first post, in which I stated :
"It does not seem (to me - an admitted "outsider") that the RCC allows for any difference of opinion from its followers. In my opinion, this is exactly why Martin Luther led the flight to the Protestant religions. Obviously, they have the right to do this (it is their religion), but nobody bites back as much as someone that feels wronged."
I would also venture that much of the current attitude one sees in the press is the backlash against the abuse scandal, and the way the Catholic Church has handled the perpetrators in the past.
Other than that, I just don't see a whole lot of bashing of the Catholic Church in the media. Again, perhaps I am insensitive to it, due to my not being Catholic. Of course, that implies the opposite - perhaps you are overly sensitive to it because you are Catholic.

The Catholic Church is an easy mark. Everyone knows it, and it's much easier to toss a rock at a large target and have some hope of hitting it. It also has a large following, and so what it does can have a proportionately larger effect on the goings on in the world than what Father Jebediah says to his 7 person congregation in the Backhills Church of The Consumptive Virgin. That makes it newsworthy.
