Can You Be Religious and Be Yourself?

Green Gaia

Absolutely. I grew up in the Church of Christ, but if I were still in that church, I could not be myself. UU is a wonderful fit for me, I can completely be myself and be active in my church.

I think in most cases it would, as Jensa said, be a matter of fit. What is sad is when individuals end up in a religion where they do NOT fit, and find themselves having to pretend to be something they are not because they truly believe that who they are is WRONG because their religion says so.

As Runt similarly said, I think a lot of people are brought into a specific religion because of the fear of what will happen if they take the latter path.

If we adopt a religion out of fear -- and fear alone -- can we still be true to ourselves within the context of that religion? Is any spirituality based on fear true to ourselves?

If not true self, religious in name only.

Old self is dead, new creature is born, without a change in self there is no true religion.(Biblically) I can't speak from any other perspective.

my spirituality does not make me a different person from the one I am. If anything it helped me to feel more at ease with myself and to accept who and what I am.

Yes. Totally. Part of me is Catholic. And I love it!!! I think it is the best part of me. I love living my faith. I don't know who'd I be without it.

That is probably the biggest problem with religion. Catholicism for example, consists of many rules and regulations that are against human nature. Let's take sex for example. All human beings have a sexual drive. You drill it into someone that this is wrong to have these urges, he never stops having them. He either gives in completely to the urges, or lies about having them. The one that completely gives in to urges, rebels against the Church, the one that lies about them could become a priest and eventually molests young boys.

Religion should revolve around you.

And some would believe being religious is to become more than animal, to become more divine. And thus, going against human nature is becoming more divine.

(Please elaborate on "Patrickism" carrdero. I am assuming it might be your own personal religion, I am curious.)

That is one of the things that has made it very hard for me to find my place. I don't see any difference in our place and that of the animals. I mean, if we are more intelligent, why not use that intelligence to help them, rather than use them? It is ok to control your "animalistic" urges, not to repress them.

I thought you handled it quite well.

That is CORRECT. Since I am an individual with personal beliefs/needs/interests I would anticipate that my REALationship with GOD (or anyONE else for that matter) would be different. Not better or more special- just different.

I personally see animals as more divine than men. So what I said is not my belief. However, I believe that becoming more like nature is becoming more divine, so in that sense yes I was telling the truth. But I don't believe we should try to be different than the animals, quite the contrary in fact.

I believe animals to be more spiritually advanced than humans too. Even though we cannot UNDERSTAND them I really do believe they
K(NOW) more than what they are not telling.
