Anyone have any info on them? I know they're a low caste sect who tattoo Ram's name on their body but does anyone have any more info besides that? They seem pretty interesting.

If I remember correctly the tattoos serve 2 functions. The first is an act of devotion and the second is an act of protection. If they tattoo the Lord's name all over their body then others will not physically abuse them because they wouldn't dare deface God's name. This is particularly important for women in this group. The names all over their bodies means their husbands, brothers, and fathers will treat their bodies with respect.

It's a shame that's the only way they won't harm the women in their society. One would think their value as human beings would be enough.

:camp:

It's not "their society" the abuse of women is an international problem. It just so happens the Ramanamis have found a way to protect themselves. It wasn't as though mistreatment of women was any higher in that community compared to the rest of India. This was a way for both the women and men of this community to express faith and protect themselves. This group is of a lower caste, the tattoos protect the men from mistreatment too.

I have to reiterate, it was years ago that I read about this group so if someone knows more please post. :)

Darling people reading and singing my favorite book - Sri Ram Charit Manas. May Sri Rama help them in their endavours. Don't worry, Ramanamis, tattoos may go, but the name of the Lord will always remain. Your community will always be known as Ramnami.
