why praying is a waste of time

The correct thing to pray for is the mental strength for maintaining peace, equanimity and love throughout the unpredictable storms of life. This aid can come by putting us in touch with our higher nature and we can be graced by higher beings to advance spiritually if our prayers are earnest.

At a less advanced level people pray for material things and occasionally even these events can experience the intervention of higher beings.

I pray to become closer to God, to pour out my heart to Him, and to ask for such blessing as may be possible for those who need it-- which is nearly everyone.

I feel completely satisfied with my prayer paradigm. I have better and worse prayer experiences, but I judge them by how I feel, not whether I have asked God for something and He has given it in a clear and obvious way.

Prayer is dialogue with God, self-reflection and introspection, opening oneself up spiritually, and putting out there for God to hear the feelings and desires of one's heart. God is not a cosmic vending machine, that, if functioning properly, will dispense whatever one asks for if the proper prayer is inserted first. It seems to me that prayer is only a waste of time if one approaches it simplistically and shallowly.

i don't get it? Please elaborate.

Yes, i believe people are at different spiritual levels. Some pray for physical things. Some pray for deeper spiritual advancement..

If you use prayers as means to get things from God, of course it's useless to pray.
Magic doesn't exist.
If one wants to pray to try to make contact with God, all right.

But prayers are not magic formulas

The only thing close to praying I do is reciting anti-theistic poetry that I have created. I am really considering on making my own Atheistic mythos but I feel mighty uninspired right now.

I think a lot of people equate prayer in their minds with the kind of superficial prayers that children make "Dear God, please give me a million dollars"

Certainly there are a lot of people that pray this way out there but not all.

Serious prayer is indistinguishable from meditation. Maybe it is a waste of time, but so is playing an addictive video game or watching tv. At least prayer can relax you and center the mind.

I suppose if your premise were true (i.e. none of our prayers come true) then you might have a point. I also suppose those who have little or no faith have far less chance of their prayers gaining great merit.
To put it another way: God knows best. I think the following prayer is supreme.


A Christian Confederate Soldier's Prayer
(Anonymous - alleged to have been found on a CSA casualty at the Devil's Den, Gettysburg)

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
