the sabbath

Once a week most Christians go to church. Some go to the early services, and others sleep in and like to catch the 11 a.m. service. And the chances are, if you're like most Christians, you go to church on Sundays, the day referred to as "the first day of the week" in the Bible.
In this book we shall explain exactly how and why this has become the commonplace practice among the Christian world. When asked, most Christians are not aware of the exact history of the development of Sunday worship - some even think the Bible commands it - but the truth of the origin of Sunday worship goes far beyond this, and it is time for all Christians to be aware of it! The Lord wants us to seek His truth. At times we will hear things we like; at other times we may encounter material that challenges us; but the Lord expects us to read, study, and learn from the Holy Word, and to accept the light of His truth as it illuminates our minds!

And this has to do with what I asked?

Well, I go to church on Sunday. Why? Because a revelation to a modern-day prophet identified Sunday as the day of rest.

9 And that thou mayest more fully keep thyself unspotted from the world, thou shalt go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day;
10 For verily this is a day appointed unto you to rest from your labors, and to pay thy devotions unto the Most High;
11 Nevertheless thy vows shall be offered up in righteousness on all days and at all times;
12 But remember that on this, the Lord's day, thou shalt offer thine oblations and thy sacraments unto the Most High, confessing thy sins unto thy brethren, and before the Lord.
13 And on this day thou shalt do none other thing, only let thy food be prepared with singleness of heart that thy fasting may be perfect, or, in other words, that thy joy may be full. (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 59:9 - 13)

D&C 59 was revealed to the prophet Joseph Smith on Sunday, August 7, 1831

Not to throw a wrench into the works, Silvermoon, but there is nothing in these verses that specifically says the Lord's Holy Day is Sunday. Obviously, I believe it is, but it could be argued either way, it seems to me.

From an Ensign article by Elder Mark E. Peterson in May 1975.

"President David O. McKay called attention to another most important phase of this subject. He said that the Christian Sabbath of course is Sunday, in commemoration of the resurrection of the Savior on the first day of the week. He calls the resurrection of Christ the greatest event in all history and notes that by proper observance of the Sabbath we show our respect for the Lord’s passion and his resurrection from the dead. (See Gospel Ideals, Deseret News Press, 1953, pp. 397–98.)"

Look in verse 12. The Lord says on "But remember that on this day, the Lord's day..." He specifically identifies Sunday as His day. Granted, you need to know that the revelation was given on a Sunday. (That's what the section headers a for) Italics added.

I agree with you Silver, but to play devil's advocate, "this day" could refer to his "holy day," which he established as a topic in verse 9.

I understand the need for a devil's advocate. Thanks for encouraging me to explain it more fully.

In verse 9 we're told to go to "go to the house of prayer and offer up thy sacraments upon my holy day". When we get to verse 12, we read "But remember that on this, the Lord's day, thou shalt offer thine oblations and thy sacraments unto the Most High" Once again, we're told a specific day to offer up sacraments. In math we learn that if a=b, and b=c, then a=c.

So if "my holy day" is the day to offer up sacraments, and Sunday "the Lord's day" is the day to offer up sacraments, then "my holy day" is the same as Sunday, "the Lord's day".

Ah, but your equation assumes "this" refers to Sunday when it may refer to "holy day" regardess of specific day of the week.

By the way, what did Jesus mean when He said, "I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity"? How does one really come to "know" the Lord? The beloved John tells us, "Whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him." 1 John 3:6. "He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not HIS commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." 1 John 2:4. Knowing Him means we obey Him. Biblically, it is impossible to be a TRUE child of God while refusing to obey the commandments of God.AND OBEYING THE COMMANDMENTS OF MAN.Willful disobedience cuts off the relationship, drives away the Holy Spirit by which we are sealed, and effectively removes the individual from the position of grace.

I go to church on Saturday which is the sabbath because it's the seventh day.... It's one of the ten commandments to keep the sabbath holy so I don't work on saturday. The sabbath is from sundown friday to sundown saturday.
Sunday is a man-made day of rest.
...

What do you guys think about the sabbath?

I think you should move to France and then you can go to church on Sunday? :sarcastic

Ohh, you are one of the Chick Tract people. Haha, I find those things to be absolutley hilarious.

I always found it somehow appropriate that those tracts are to be found in public lavatories. Nothing like leaving those things in places of defilement. :jiggy:
