Dialogue Between Latter-day Saints and Baptists

That's really one thing I miss about Washington/Oregon. Most of the time people could care less about what religion you are. Vancouver is the perfect place though (I am slightly biased). Work in Washington, don't pay state tax. Shop in Oregon, don't pay sales tax. The schools in Vancouver are better funded than the schools in Oregon also.
The property is much less in most of Washington as well. My husband used to work at the tower at the Portland airport and lots of other controllers lived in Camas and Vancouver. They would shop on the way home from work to save sales taxes. They have the best of both worlds.

Hey Buttercup,

I know it's kind of off topic from this discussion, but if you look over in the "What do you want to know about Mormonism?" thread you'll see the kind of experiences I have had with Baptists. I guess I always assumed that this stuff was spread around in the church. That may not always be the case.

It's great to know now that you are Baptist and are much more openminded and tolerant than your fellow believer over there. It really does give me hope!

I have to say I find this all rather interesting because in Savannah, GA and even moreso in surrounding areas, it absolutely matters what denomination a person belongs to. In fact, it matters what physical church a person goes to. We don't just have Baptists either. We have Southern Baptists, Independent Baptists, Primitive Baptists, etc. I couldn't tell you specifically the differences because I don't exactly have an open dialogue with any Baptists. Obviously the differences are important enough for them though. I knew a girl in high school who got thrown out of her house for wearing earrings because "Independent Baptists don't do that kind of floozy stuff." I would say that's a pretty harsh way to treat someone in your own family for specifically not following the tenents of one off-shoot of the Baptist faith. It happened a lot though. Anyway, my point is that here in Savannah, people identify themselves first as the denomination they belong to and second as a Christian...the opposite of what Dawny and Buttercup describe. Obviously, it's rather region-specific. This could explain why LDS members feel hostility from Baptists and Baptists are perplexed by it.
This is such a great post !!!

I certainly don't doubt your experience. My experience is that, at least in some places, there's more to it than media hype. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find more laid back churches on the west coast. I think a lot of things are more laid back over there, which is why I can't wait to move.
I have been to LDS worship services in the Huntington Beach, California area, and I was floored at how different the meeting felt compared to a Salt Lake City, Utah LDS worship service. I felt a great feeling in California among the Mormons there. It was nice !!!, and it made a lasting impression on me. Utah Mormons are in a way a lot like Baptists in Georgia, I think, very strict, and follow the letter of the law precisely. WHERE"S THE LOVE ???, I ask. Where is Christ's love displayed the most, that is where I want to be. I can pick on Utah Mormons cuz I am one, and am sort of picking on myself too. We want to be where there is love, and that might be with a group of people that accept us, no matter what we believe.

I didn't see this thread until tonight, but I'd be willing to participate. I'm not a Baptist, but I grew up Baptist. I hail from an entire family of Southern Baptists on my mother's side and Church of Christ on my father's side. That's interesting because I have half my education from Baptist schools and I'm now at a Disciples' seminary. My father's parents always thought that I was going to hell, and now everyone would if they knew what I was doing in seminary.:D

Thanks for posting your beliefs Buttercup.

What does it mean when it says that the Holy Ghost is "active, convicting us of sin?"

God loves us enough not to leave us alone. He has our best interest at heart. He does not want to us to participate in that which grieves Him and harms us. This is why Jesus said that He would not leave us alone but that He would send the Comforter (Holy Spirit) who would help us and guide us (John 14:26; Acts 9:31). This Comforter is the one who grants us the assurance of our salvation so that we might know we possess eternal life (1 John 5:13). He also anoints us and teaches us (1 John 2:19). And, He also consistently and lovingly convicts us of our sins. Why does he do this? Again, to bring us to confession and repentance.

If you are wondering if Baptists think the Holy Spirit is condeming us, that's not the case. Convicting of sin simply means....a firm showing of wrong doing. Sort of like a conscience

This is OT...but I thought you all might get a laugh, especially considering some of the debate and what not...

I was flipping through threads and when I saw the title of this thread...for a moment I read it as...

Dialogue Between Latter Day Saints and Bigots

I'm a dork! But I got a chuckle over my own stupidity.

That Baptists are Bigots, silly. I wouldn't say that about LDS....only about my own!

Oh, sorry, I read that wrong. :) Yeah, I'm silly, I just spent the last 2 hours with preschool children. One of them actually threatened to get a knife from the kitchen and plunge it in me to kill me. Kind of freaky actually.

Just one. It was freaky though, you could see it in his eyes. The rest were great, well, not all, onelittle girl decided to pour a cup of beans(you know the ones they play with) all over another boys head and the carpet, had fun cleaning that up. Then pouring all the milk in the garbage. It's fun though, I love it. I love it everytime I go there. :)

My daughter Emily got into a "fight" with chalk erasers yesterday in school. :biglaugh:

They do hilarious stuff. I'm so happy that you do something that you enjoy. I bet you're dynamite at it. :)

Wow, I didn't realize working with pre schoolers could be so dangerous! :) Did you say something to the Mom? I would have. That's pretty out of line.

thanks. Yeah, these kids are great. Everytime they see me they yell "Becky" at the top of their lungs, so that makes me feel special.

The parents aren't there. It's a HeadStart Preschool and I believe that the teacher heard. It was a little odd, especially coming from that child.
