Judging God

The Sum of Awe

Brought to you by the moment that spacetime began.
Is it sinful to judge God or is it simply meaningless? I often hear that a man can't judge God - but never fully understood if that was because we're not one to question the superior, or if it was just something wrong to do.

I feel that god if he existed should be questioned, like have you ever read the terrible things he did in the bible ?.

Sort of like trying to measure the universe with a slide-rule.

If you can't judge something then you can't relate to it in anyway. If you worship "God" then you have judged "God" as being worthy of worship. If you love "God" then you have judged "God" as being lovable. If you follow "God" then you have judged "God" as being something you should follow.

All theistic religions are based on judging "God".

MMmmm, that does make sense.

I don't see how it can be either, unless you establish previously that God himself is unimportant.

If God is instead assumed to be at least potentially significant, and if it is reasonably possible to attempt to judge Him, then doing so is a moral imperative.

It may or may not have some discernible results, of course, but the attempt must be made. Failing to do so would be in essence showing a lack of respect for the supposedly God-given gift of having moral discernment.

Why wouldn't it be meaningless?

I am going to combine Jesus and Voltaire here.

Man wasn't created to serve God, God was created to serve man.

Given that I think it is wise to question, judge and criticize all God concepts.

Man judge God all the time, really doesn't mean anything.
Be like a fish in a fish bowl judging the "creature" that stares back at it through the glass.

Personally understand that "god' is a concept. One can judge a concept only after one attempts at validating the concept and only from his/her own experience in validating it could one be qualifies to judge the concept as being so or not.
Besides Gautama has made it simpler by saying that it is not whether God is there or not is not the question; the question is for to BE and when one himself IS then no question remains as the questioner himself is absent when one simply IS!

How or why is it a "moral imperative," Luis? How are you interpreting the process of judging? What does it mean for something to be a "moral imperative?"

As for the OP, I generally find understanding to be considerably more useful than judging as a general policy.

Neither from my perspective. I don't think we can help but judge God and those judgments are meaningful to us, resulting in action, and then reality. It is how we make God real.

I often hear that a man can't judge God - but never fully understood if that was because we're not one to question the superior, or if it was just something wrong to do.

I think one ought to give the benefit of the doubt when talking about what God ought to do. That is on account of the obvious superiority such a being must possess. It isn't wrong to judge God, but one should consider God's perspective first when doing so.

For the sake of discussion, let's assume there's a deity. If so, and if that deity were incomprehensible to us, then it would be meaningless to judge it. Whether it was sinful or not would depend on whether or not that deity took offense at being judged.

Now, even if all that were indeed the case, it would still be legitimate to judge, criticize, etc. human concepts of that deity. At least that's how I see it.

As for some notion that it's wrong to question the superior, that would seem to me a weak ground upon which to base an aversion to questioning, judging, criticizing, etc.

Someone who believes in a God needs to decide how valid that God's wisdom is, don't you think?
