Lying to oneself is never healthy. If your Self is so weak that it flip flops in the wind then I'm not sure what's really been accomplished.

Compare bending/adapting to the situation to being broken by circumstance. The reed bends in the wind, but the mighty oak might break apart during a real windstorm. Which one is really stronger?

I don't think the analogy works at all. We are talking about personality, not physical strength.

Please clarify what you meant, then.

What was unclear? One's Self is weak if it simply blows wherever society wants it up. Yes it's metaphorical to physical weakness but it's a metaphor that actually work. Have you ever heard of a weak argument? A weak paper? A weak plot? A weak minded individual? My problem wasn't with you using a metaphor, it was with you using one that is not applicable. You can't compare mental weakness to that of a tree, it just doesn't work, it's apples and oranges.

A successful magician should have a strong sense of Self. That's the most fundamental attribute of the magician, it's where Will stems from. There is a grave difference between being able to switch out masks at will in different situations while still holding on to your true self, and literally allowing others to change who you are at different times.

Hence my remark about being broken by circumstance.

Flexibility in ones mind is not weakness. The reed is more flexible than the oak, and doesn't break apart in a strong wind.

I would say that the oak being broken by circumstance would qualify as others changing who you are, no?

Flexibility is the masks - being able to contort oneSelf into different shapes.

Here again, you are focusing on "things," while I'm focusing on "processes."

Let me point something out: a "thing" without processes is "dead."

So, which is more important to focus on: things and their qualities or processes and their effects?

Finding my own way
One's Self is weak if it simply blows wherever society wants it up.
But youare (with the above) speaking of something totally different from what I am saying.

My Self, and my sense of Self, do not change. I change how I interact with others, based on context (and on workability, to be honest). The only time I change how I interact with my Self is if my interactions are ineffective.

How is changing masks and contorting a "thing" and not a processes? The Self is a thing, the change is the process, the manner of change is the topic. You want to actually discuss it yet, or dance around more?

I think it is also important to figure out which model of personality development you hold true.

Actually, I see the "Self" as a concept. "Masks" are likewise a concept. You have the biological components that are "things," but constantly changing. If you look for the "Self" as a thing, it'll just slip away, as there isn't any one "thing" you can grasp and say, "this thing is the Self." As my friend YmirGF would say, "we are action personified."

Whether the self is a concept or not is irrelevant to the conversation.

The Sum of Awe

Brought to you by the moment that spacetime began.
The Right Hand Path searches outside of themselves for God or enlightenment, while the Left Hand Path searches inside themselves for God or enlightenment.

Which is a reason I prefer the latter - The goal is not forced. You know exactly how things need to be done, you are responsible for your own mistakes, and most importantly, following yourself will lead you to a goal better suiting for you.

Just came to mind today, and I feel it is very accurate. What are your feelings about it?
