I can think of two legitimate reasons pretty easily:
1) Freedom of speech
2) Freedom of religion
And also:
3) What constitutes a "religious symbol" is highly up for interpretation and would realistically be impossible to actually regulate.

A school as a right to regulate the dress code of the student body. I am not saying they don't have a right to wear a religious symbol, I am saying that a school has a right to limit any overt displays of religious symbols. As long as it is worn discreetly I see no problem.
If it has to do with dress codes, than "religious symbols" shouldn't be targeted at all. It should be a blanket policy that prohibits wearing jewelry or some such.
The irony is, I don't particularly care considering my religious symbols would never be called out as such. This means I could freely display my religious symbols, but all the mainstream religions can't. Apparently being a religious minority has benefits on occasion.

You have no stance to tell anyone what they can and can not wear and where they can or can not wear it.

So, you speak for all the hundreds of thousands of schools around the world then and over see their dress code regulations?
My point is that a cross or whatever worn around the neck isn't going to distract anyone.
That would be a good solution. Then, that way, no one feels singled out.

As for things mandatory, id say deserve some lax but not total. Hijabs should be kept to minimal, no niqab, and must meet other proper dress codes. Same for kippahs and the headress sikhs wear

You obviously missed the point. If I say part of my Luciferian religion is to wear a pentagram ring on my right index finger, who are you to tell me no?
I think it came from a version of the Black Mass. I think it roughly translates to "In the Name of our God, Satan, Glory to Lucifer" (or Lucifer in the Highest or Lucifer Glorified/Exhalted, etc). The Latin isn't very good. I have that necklace, actually.
