don't be fooled by the smiling Sagan in my avatar (I like to think of it as a sarcastic/condescending wonka-like smile)... when I see people trying to insult science by mixing it with their metaphysical myths, I won't hesitate to HITCHSLAP the truth right in their faces..

"A single missive mentions Firnas employing wings for flight - composed seven centuries after the reputed undertaking by the Moroccan historian Ahmed Mohammed al-Maqqari (d. 1632)"

Ah yes 700 years after it "happened". Yes of course.

Abbas Qasim Ibn Firnas was a scientist, inventor, and musician who lived in Andalusia, as the region around Cordoba, Spain was known when it was under Muslim rule and part of the vast Ottoman Empire. Among his many accomplishments were the manufacture of glass from sand, a method for cutting facets in crystal, and the first metronome to keep time in music. In 852 CE, Firnas witnessed an attempt to fly from a minaret of the Great Mosque in Cordoba. The would-be aviator survived the fall – the huge cloak he used for wings acted as a parachute. Firnas was intrigued and spent the next two decades studying birds, bats, and wind-borne seeds to discover the secrets of flight. (Some historical accounts say the Firnas was the jumper and he spent years in study to discover what he did wrong.) In 875 CE he was ready to make his own attempt (or a second attempt). Hanging from a tail-less glider, he jumped from a high point in the city and made a short, uncontrolled glide. He injured his back when landing, putting an end to his test flights. Nonetheless, he was the first scientist ever to study and test the possibility of manned flight using a fixed-wing aircraft. There is a crater on the dark side of the Moon named in his honor.

Thats true. You dont get cut to pieces on Mars. Or shot. Or beheaded with an axe, machete, saw...... and all these other genious ways the mexican cartels have found to seperate the head from the torso.

Its really a scientific field on its own.

Those volunteers will be used similar to the laboratory mice ,for me i see it as immoral and sad and i don't wish anyone to be such stupid to live in a planet which is known to be unfit for humans and for whatever reason.

Well yeah until your caliphate broke down and your clerics took over. So its been a while.

Which clerics that took over,Assad or Saddam

I don't understand why some non-Muslims are having difficulty understanding it
; I think it is very clear from the fatwa that space travel for Muslims is not "banned".
that's right my friend , travel to space ; or living in space is not forbiden (banned) in Islam .

I guess it's just big missunderstand or prejudge happened here .

I think so, too. But, I do not where the misunderstanding comes from, because I thought it was very clear.

Once you called it as a myth, then what kind of nonsense you have to offer next.

I told you not to get me started...

1- the islamic civilization was built in the first place on the shoulders of non-muslims, and it's science was originally copied from non-islamic sources (Hellenic, Persian, Indian, Egyptians... etc)

2- the so called "islamic golden age" was only one brief period in muslim history that didn't last for long and never resurrected to this day, it was primarily encouraged by a short series of enlightened Abbasid Caliphs like Al-Maamoun who sponsored scientific research and philosophical and reasonable thinking..

3- the mongol invasion was merely the last straw that brought down an already cracked building... long before the mongols arrived, there were anti-enlightenment movements in the muslim world pioneered by people like Al-Ghazali who condemned science, philosophy and reason for being "anti-islamic"

4- Many of the renowned muslim scientists and thinkers were viewed by many of the religious clerics back then as heretics and blasphemers, if it weren't for state protection and sponsorship many of them would have met the same fate as Galileo, in fact something similar already happened in spain when Ibn Rushd was banished and had his books burned for being "heretic", eventually they were persecuted by clerics and rulers alike...

5- the so-called muslim scientists did not really offer much to the world except for preserving the ancient hellenic science and transporting far-eastern science to the west, these sciences were not brought to their full potential until later during the european renaissance

one more thing: all this has happened despite islam, not because of it..

You are wasting your time by showing your ignorance in copying and pasting false facts.

I advice you to enrich your knowledge with educational sources than just following blindly the spiteful ones which shows your hatred and jealousy as well.

jealousy of what exactly?!! your vast scientific development?!! your amazing human rights record?!! your overwhelming contributions to humanity?!!!...:sarcastic

civilizations have frequent periods of rise and decay, yours had only one that lasted for about 300~400 years of flourishing out of 1400 years, and it wouldn't have done so without leeching on the contributions of already conquered civilizations... don't you find that a little bit unusual?!!!

you lost me at the first paragraph of the first article... world's 1st university?!!! seriously?!!

for your information, the world's 1st university was established in Nalanda, India... 5th century AD..

It is quite interesting that India is so often overlooked.

Several Archaeology articles have noted that India has some of the oldest actual organized cities.

Those settled cities left time to think, - leading to some of the oldest Religion, philosophy, high culture, etc.

This, according to one such article, is why there is so much Indian philosophy and religion underlying so many of the world's cultures and religions. You just have to search for it.

Or all of the "peaceful" countries where their religion basically owns the state, and you can get your head hacked off for not believing in a certain ideology.

You are insisting to follow the nonsense and i ain't surprised on your desperate attempts to distort Islam.

You are proud of India and using the same silly attempts that some idiots already used through many web sites to point out that Europe had waked up by the ancient Indian science and that muslim did nothing other than being a super power in occupying the world.

You are jealous as to know that while your grandfathers were sleeping in the dark ages the muslims were the greatest power and kept, translated, searched and added to science and taught it to your grandfathers.

I found no other explanation for your grudge and hatred other than jealousy.

So where is the source for this claim? Nowhere.

Those volunteers will be used similar to the laboratory mice ,for me i see it as immoral and sad and i don't wish anyone to be such stupid to live in a planet which is known to be unfit for humans and for whatever reason.

They will live their entire life on Mars and most probably die a natural death. You know like you, me or some other random human.

The only difference will be that they will find their natural end on Mars and not on Earth.

I know thats difficult to understand for some. Its after all a very complex situation.

End of the Islamic Golden Age. You have probably heard about it.

The Platonic Academy and Aristotles Lyceum both precede anything on this list.

No they werent called Universities. But hey the University of Al-Karaouine didnt even teach Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry until 1957. 1957. Seriously.

lol

And yeah Nalanda precedes also everything on that list.

You are jealous as to know that while your grandfathers were sleeping in the dark ages the muslims were the greatest power and kept, translated, searched and added to science and taught it to your grandfathers.

I found no other explanation for your grudge and hatred other than jealousy.

And then the Islamic world wasnt simply overtaken. It was owned, if you know this use of words.

Even today the Islamic world doesnt even come close.

I gave you a source from a book, you give me a webpage... as others said, several Hellenic and Indian Institutions precede your "university" by centuries...

and your "university" was originally an Islamic Madrassa that focused primarily on Religious studies.. that really doesn't count for much.. and yes the primary contribution of your Islamic civilization was preserving Hellenic and Indian science which made it possible for the west to use them later... and most if not all your scientists came from conquered nations like Persia, Egypt and Spain..

You are jealous as to know that while your grandfathers were sleeping in the dark ages the muslims were the greatest power and kept, translated, searched and added to science and taught it to your grandfathers.

bla bla bla... west bad... bla bla bla.. islam rules... bla bla bla :ignore:

By the way, I'm not western, and My grandfathers were conquering the middle east and north africa long before Muhammed was born (if there actually was one with such a name).... but you don't find me bragging about it much...

oh and islam wasn't the greatest power in the middle ages, you're forgetting about a 3rd world power ,china, which was the real power back then... luckily for you they were mostly peaceful, unlike their mongol cousins who nearly drove your civilization to the edge of extinction...

Actually there is no evidence whatsoever for the claimed one university in India in the 4th century while the Islamic one is still open and stand till our recent days similar to many great buildings in Spain which indicate to how great that empire was.

BTW,how did you know that they were teaching only religious topics in that university ?
Was you there at that period of time !!,as i know religious topis were taught in mosques and madras and not universities.

It is stupid to think that one university was indeed existed in India in the 4th century while no other universities were built in India or near to India at that same period of time and then all in a sudden one to be built in the far west (Morocco) hundreds of years later, indeed stupidity in some people can never be fixed (of course i don't mean you but some people)

bla bla bla... west bad... bla bla bla.. islam rules... bla bla bla :ignore:

The symtoms of jealosy started :D

i didn't say the west is bad,so be decent and don't say things that i didn't say and if you have difficulties in understanding the meaning of my words then ask your dad for help.

Typical muslim narrative, trying to dig up anything in your history to make up for your current epic failure...

Huh,it's a stupid point of view.
Present failure never erases the historical good ones.
Knowledge now is everywhere, you'll always find muslim scientists in the east and the west all along with others, there is no relation between being smart and what is your belief, that is just a stupid way to think.

By the way, I'm not western, and My grandfathers were conquering the middle east and north africa long before Muhammed was born (if there actually was one with such a name).... but you don't find me bragging about it much...

You deny the existence of prophet Mohammed too.:D
Do you believe that you do really exist ? if you don't then slap your face to wake up from such Anomalous feeling.
Denial - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The middle east was occupied by Romans before and during the era of Mohammed, that is if you believe that Mohammed did really exist.
Did you believe that there were 2 powers before Islam and which were the Romans and the Persians.

oh and islam wasn't the greatest power in the middle ages, you're forgetting about a 3rd world power ,china, which was the real power back then... luckily for you they were mostly peaceful, unlike their mongol cousins who nearly drove your civilization to the edge of extinction...

Hatred and jealousy syndrome once again.:D
Actually the Mongolians were about to be extincted during their attempt to stay in the Arab lands,no men can dare to stay for long in our lands, they may win for a time then they'll flee if not yet dead.
