Gun Control? Yay, or nay?

*I searched for threads about this subject but couldn't find any - I'm surprised actually, anyway...* Guns are an interesting topic. We all know that they are out there, but we don't like to talk about them. Rarely does the subject come up in a casual conversation...so, I will start one. I would like to know the VARIOUS views on this topic - from the NRA to the Brady Campaign and everything in between.

Yeehaaw...this should be fun!

EDIT: Sorry, I just found a similar topic posted by Fluffy, but maybe this one will be different.

Like Chris Rock said, we don't need gun control, we need bullet control.

Personally, I own a gun. I think everyone should. Since law and order hasn't been perfected, people need to be able to protect themselves.

Nay.

Gun control only makes it incredibly difficult for responsible American citizens to obtain guns for recreation and self defense.

Criminals will obtain guns illegally, regardless of any gun control regulation...so, ultimately the constitutional rights of responsible American are infringed upon.

But won't people be safer without guns - crime will go down and we can start unlocking our doors at night - just like England and Australia, right?

Hmm. Some gun control, yes. Not so much that it's impossible for a law-abiding citizen to get a gun.

However, it's not just criminals who ignore all the laws completely who use guns, despite the implication some people like to make. There are people out there who hurt others with guns (intentionally or unintentionally) that might not have obtained those guns if there were more restrictions.

So, yes, some restrictions on the rights outlined in Amendment II, just as there are restrictions on all our other rights, is reasonable. But I do believe there's a point where it gets to be unreasonable.

We don't? I like to talk about guns. I'm planning on getting a single action revolver. I want to join the SASS (Single Action Shooting Society). Cowboy shooting looks fun. ;)

It seems we talked about this before here. I recall this being a pro-gun group, in general. Good to know that we all have at least on thing in common.;)

I am all for the right to bear arms. We own a shotgun and a serious amount of swords. However, I do not mind a few reasonable restrictions on them. I think registering firearms is reasonable, and to those who think the government will take them away, just do the logistics. It would be horrifically expense to go door to door removing all the weapons from the citizens in a country this large and this well armed.

If you deny the American people the right to bear arms, you're violating their constitutional right to bear arms...period.

I want them to a lmited extent. After all, I like driver's licenses, because not everyone is responsible enough for a car. Likewise, not everyone is responsible enough for a gun. Some gun control seems to be a good idea in that light. OTOH, it is also true that if the gun laws went to the point to outlaw them, only criminals would have them, and the common man defenseless.

Perhaps most pressing are two other issues. First, it is a historical civil liberty we have. We should not take such things away lightly. If it is our right, then rather than curb it, we should curb those who misuse it.

However, the reasoning under the civil liberty is the real question: it was put in place so that people could feasibly resist and overthrow their government. If we don't agree with this or feel this is out of date, then the whole reasoning behind protecting it in the Constitution is undermined, and the issue becomes much more of a non-issue. And while I think we should be able to do that, I question whether the guns we have could resist a federal army, and I have a lot of problems with people having the chemicals, high-powered missles, or tanks to do it. The weapons have a little too much destructive capacity, even if we could own them (expense alone could make it a non-issue).
