What is the silliest proselytizing line you've heard?

I hate to disappoint, but I consider it a sectarian squabble with no possible resolution, since it's based on the illusion that we know how to take the NT and differentiate between fact, fable, and fabrication in such a way as to cull anything of historical value. Those who say 'a Christian is {X} because Jesus said {Y}' should pay serious attention to the scriptural reference to throwing stones and its implications.

This isn't about "squabbling" but rather trying to define a term. I don't call myself a Christian because I think the name has become synonymous with hate and intolerance; however, I like to be clear about what we're talking about.

I would be interested in other opinions, because the Christians I'm more familiar with are very clear that just because you believe Jesus is the Son of God, it doesn't mean you're a Christian. My mom's family is Catholic and their priests told her family that Christians were considered a cult. I assume this is just because my mom turned away from the Catholic faith, but am not sure.

<<Also - Christianity is a belief system, as you stated. However, in this case, the people that you state are "using it as an excuse" are merely interested in the title - unless of course you would like to make the case that they are truly Christians exercising their faith.>>

I'm lost here. The people I said were using a "religious" excuse were the Spanish conquerors and I wouldn't classify them Christians according to the definitions I've been given.

I'm not sure if this is proselytizing or not, as it was actually aimed at me while I was still officially Christian. One of my fellow church members learned that I was studying shamanism- which, in itself, is not against (or for, for that matter) Christianity. They began to try to show me where I was wrong in studying it. We tried to discuss it civilly, but when I happened to mention that shamans could 'move' time (although I can't, yet) he became furious, and began belittling the concept of perception being what the perceptor makes of it. I insisted, I hope reasonably, that one could change the world by believing (or knowing) something thing to be different.

He frowned sourly, and said "Okay, so if believe red lights are actually green, would you want to go driving with me?" I'm afraid the fact that he cocked his head and smiled, as if he'd just won the 'conversion,' was what made me respond the way I did.

"Sure! I'll just believe they're red, then, and it'll work out." I reached in my pocket and dangled my keys in front of him. "You wanna drive your car, or mine?"

I was kind of sad he didn't take me up on it.

ROFL...great response!

Check out the thread in Religious Debates - Are Catholics Christians? It is just getting started and you should be able to talk about it in more depth there.TVOR

The funniest one I heard was when my friend was walking down the street, not too long after 9/11 and a discheveled man asked him if he was a christian. He very poiltely said no, he is native american. The man looked at him agast and then shaking his fist told him that if he wasn't a christian than he was a terroist and that he would be watching him to make shure that he didn't harm his nice christian nation. He went on for a while about how evil other religions are that the only way to save your soul was to believe in christ. My friend excused himself saying that he was late for work, wich he was, and then walked the rest of the 100 ft. or so to his job where he started laughing.

*snort* How sad is it when someone is telling a Native American to change their beliefs based upon the idea of America being a 'Christian' nation?

HAHA. WOW. the audacity and arrogance of some people. man. thats called over patriotism (even to a religion), when you forget the basic fundamentals of it.

wouldn't this be a pretty good spot?

Revelation 21
8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."
I wish you were right though... maybe we should start some kind of movement within the church or something... maybe not but still! :D

*quivers in fear* i know i'm a wee bit off topic dont slay me mod oh please spare me *Smeagle voice*

um, why dont u just hop off to the thread about wiccanism in Religious Debates if you are convinced everything about the bible is right including how it knows about witchcraft, even though most of christianity is witchcraft.

A friend of mine is a Wiccan and she casts spells. This isn't included in any definition of Christianity that I know of.

u quoted me and didnt even read what i said... lol

i said I WISH YOU WERE RIGHT! meaning I would side with her, not Christianity... I'm not a literalist, I don't even consider myself to be christian, so i therefore wouldn't think that everything the bible says is right... but i will hop on :)

Melody... you should have your friend start a thread called "Pagan for Dummies" or something and she could perhaps give some information that would actually support the existence of spells and magic and all that. ie: say "abubachanachinaba" 5 times and visualize a flame and a fireball will shoot out of your hand. *random* im beginning to wonder if there are any religions that deal with the actual manipulation of the physical world or if its all spiritual (meaning not tangible)... hhmm...

"We are all going to live forever on a paradise earth but we love God for who he is, the life giver. You will be one of the ones who will be able to watch a sequoia go through it's life cycle." -- A Presiding Overseer's Wife (Both JW's)

Later she started talking about Jesus being around to see the sequoia's when they were seedlings. All I kept wondering was how he got over to this continent from the middle east to see them!

wow, a tree. that's exactly what i'd be doing on the other side. watching a tree grow through it's thousands of years of life! :bonk:

When i worked at Ukrops it was almost a bi-weekly thing with people trying to "save" you. One of my coworkers asked, "Well don't you want to be saved?"

One customer whose groceries i was taking out asked if i believed in evolution or creation. I told her evolution and then she gave me a pamplet and told me to "have an open mind"

It offered $100,000 to anyone who could prove evolution true. lol
