Ray Conniff was a genius and ultra famous Band Leader, Trombonist (is that the word?), arranger and conducter from the 19thirties (damn that non working three), on. He played and recorded until he died a few years ago. (2002, I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, Cardero). He's played with the likes of Artie Shaw, Bob Crosby and Glen Gray, etc.

My father loved him, I was very much exposed to him as a child. I remember dancing around the kitchen with my father to Somewhere My Love when I was like 9 or so.
No way am I inferring that Ray Coniff and Lawrence Welk are inferior, they were catagorized as Easy Listening. My father was more Soul and R&B. Between the Sly, the James Brown and the O'Jays at the age of 7 or 8 it was too late, I was already funked-up. He collected 8-tracks (don't laugh) and cassettes. As I grew up, I continued his legacy with cassettes and CD's.

I was lucky (well, in some respects) when it came to being exposed to music when I was growing up, my dad listened to all the big band leaders as well as Sly, James Brown, the Four Tops, Gladys Knight, Del Shannon, etc, etc. We had quite a diverse music collection.

When I first started being able to differentiate between different musicians, songs, bands etc, my dad used to quiz me. Once a week, he would sit me down and play a mixed tape of music from the 50's, 60's and 70's he had made. I had to be able to name at least 10 out of 15 songs and artists on the tape and if I wasn't able to, I was grounded and forced to do nothing but sit in my room and study the musicians, songs, lyrics, etc, until the next week, at which time, my grounding would depend on how I did on the next quiz. This went on until I was 16. It was an unbelievably strict (and quite ridiculous) thing my father did to me, however, I do thank him slightly because had he never forced it on me, I wouldn't have the music knowledge that fills 90% of my brain capacity now, nor would I have an ear for music, or an extreme, obsessive love that I do now. A lot of people are appauled when I tell them he did that to me, but, though I used to hate him for it, now I thank him for it.

Ooo, you're good! That's exactly what I was thinking. The fox, especially, is one of my favorites, and is a frequent 'topic' of the form!

I'm still collecting my icons and winding my wife up in the process! I recently bought an icon of the Great Martyr St. George which is quite nice and we were given a fantastic icon of St. Daniel the Hesychast (her patron) for my daughter's baptism. That one is absolutely amazing because it came to us via the Metropolitan of Moldova (also called Daniel) when my daughter's godparents contacted a friend or relative who works at the metropolitanate. In addition to getting us a beautiful hand written icon in record time (I have no idea how he got it made so quickly - guess it pays to be a bishop) he also enclosed the entire service for the saint, which would have been almost impossible for us to find given that he is a Romanian saint who was only glorified in 1992.

Today while fossil diving in the Peace River (Fl), I found an old apothecary bottle that was estimated to be from the 1880s to 1910. I also found a large horse tooth as well as a knee cap from a mastadon and part of the tusk (ivory only) and ribs from a dugong. Of course I snagged a hundred or so shark teeth as well.

How awesome is that. I collect bells. Like the little ones you ring. I have over 60+ from all over the world. They are my little bad habit. :D

I also collect Bibles, I even have one from Japan. It's written sideways...
Mine is top to bottom. Some 20 Bibles in about a dozen languages. That Japanese one is the only one I don't read without problems. I wrote read, i.e. manage the script, not necessarily meaning that I understand it all. (I don't count the downloaded ones or other electronic scripture, like The Internet Sacred Text Archive.)

I'm still not sure if I mainly collect languages or scripts. The more impressive numbers will be if you look at the number of languages for which I own a dictionary or grammar or tutor or some similar book. Way past 100 they are. I really one day should count the number of scripts represented.

I don't use the Dewey decimal system, but rather strictly adhere to the system used by Swedish public libraries. I have had to make a few personal modifications, because that set won't for example feature a specific code for the Jaunsari language, or distinguish between Rajasthani varieties.

To further exemplify, two of my most precious books are one which I think might be the very first printed Swedish book on Semitic languages (one more copy of it in one Swedish university library), and a Latin grammar - printed in Latin and Tibetan (no other references on the Internet, AFAIK).

Funny that you should mention this now. I have been wanting to expand my small collection of religious icons but don't know where to look. I 'd prefer to aquire them hands on, more fun than over the internet.
Any suggestions on where to look?
