Hello all. I'm Sarah, 18, and Christian/Protestant. More Methodist than anything else, yet still a Dutch Reformer.

I was called by God this past weekend on a trip with my youth group to become a Youth Pastor/Counselor. I truly witnessed God's grace this weekend with the other youth in my group, and for the majority of the weekend, it was all about them, and at Altar Call, I couldn't find it within me to worry about my problems, but poured prayers for the youth in my group who need healing.

I was also charged by the Pastor of the church my youth group is based from to go to my Minister with my cousin, and talk about updating our church. See, our sanctuary can hold 850 congregants, yet our average weekly attendance is 60, and nearly 20 are choir members. My church's congregation is rooted in the old blood and old money of the area, and unfortunately, the older congregants have the most influence with our church, and even the Consistory turned up its nose when our Minister allowed World AIDS Day 2005 to hold their memorial service at our church. You see, we have at least 17 youth in the church, but my cousin and I are the only ones that bother giving up more than an hour and a half on Sunday morning, which is even more pathetic than the Sunday Worship attendance, but it's coming from that. I've seen more families leave our church than come in, and it's due to the unwelcoming atmosphere created not by the Minister, but by the congregants. Our church is dying to the point that my future children won't be raised in the church that I was, and the congregants who claim to accept and live by the teachings of Christ are where the seams are fraying.

Any ideas, aside from leaving that congregation, to revitalize our church and bring more youth into it? And not just bring a friend on Sunday morning, but make it more youth- and young family-friendly?

First off...a very warm welcome!

Don't give up...keep the faith. It's clear by your post, you're working very hard to make positive change. Believe in change for your church...and God will do the rest. Encourage all the youth who are excited in their faith to speak out...encourage anyone who will listen to shout out and show their excitement in Christ. That'll get the older members' attention. Let that light inside of you shine, regardless of the situation...you may find that your enthusiasm will become contagious.

I'll keep you and your congregation in my prayers.

"Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them." Mark 11:24

Hi, Sarah. Welcome to Religious Forums. We're happy to have you with us and hope you enjoy your stay. :)
I wish I had a good answer to your question, but I don't. There are a lot of wonderful people here with great ideas. Maybe someone will come up with something that will help you make your church more family friendly.

My Mom goes to a Lutheran church and the congregation votes on everything. Maybe encouraging involvement...asking for ideas from your congregation as to what they would want out of a family friendly church would encourage your congregation to get involved.

Hello Brokenwearybones
Welcome to the forum.
You have a long and rewarding road ahead,
The first step is the hardest then with the Grace of God keep going.

Spend a little time on the forum and I am sure you will pick up Ideas.
Dont overlook the LDS they have every thing not only well organised, but it is God and family centered. I am sure they won't mind you picking their brains.

merry meet and welcome to RF!

thanks for sharing yoru story with us! i don't really have any big ideas for you, other than perhaps doing some small "blessing the community" projects - these projects are where you choose something simple to do for people - for instance, you could just offer people chocolate bars in town, say your from x church, and youd just liek to offer them some chocolate as a sign of Gods love for this community

it may attract a few people to the church, people who are interested in the idea of jesus but have been put off for what ever reason

it's just a suggestion, but it works well for my church :D

blessed be
mike
