Hi,
I believe masturbation to be something that is to be avoided. Nocturnal emissions, as they occur in a state of non-wakefulness, incur little to no moral culpability and the seminal discharge is usually much less than with masturbation but volitional ejaculation outside of procreation done by married people is something else entirely.
Finally, I see masturbation as a coarse and ultimately ephemeral joy rather than a higher joy and the loss of important minerals in the semen including most importantly zinc can have enervating effects on the body and mind although these effects can be stopped and even counteracted by the practice of chastity.
The Vedas refer to the semen or "virya" (from whence comes our word "vigor") as being precious and say that it should not be wasted outside of procreation. Storing it up is thought by the Vedas to produce a state of "ojas" wherein the semen - the powerful life force of the male - is conserved and reabsorbed into the body to thereby heighten the intellect, physical strength and endurance and the spiritual faculties which is but one reason why it is practiced by most mendicant religious people. The loss of one drop of "virya "is equated in these texts to be equivalent to the loss of over forty drops to a pint of blood.
Just my own views on masturbation. Though I remain a sensual being I have opted to turn my back on it and spend my time on bigger and better things and try to reach and cultivate a greater, more beneficial, and more lasting joy than can be found through auto-erotic stimulation.
Not trying to come off as "holier than thou" but that is my view. I will say that such complete abstinence is a very hard road to hoe but is quite beneficial in the long run.
