What is hate?

I keep reading "why do Christians hate homosexuals?" and I keep thinking that it is not true that Christians hate homosexuals. I think I don't.

What does it mean To Hate?

I think it's most basic definition is to hold very strong or excessive feelings of dislike for anything or anyone.

So...hate is dislike is to avoid something. True? But that is not how it is used in forum or in the Bible.

I feel avoided many times. I do not naturally think it means hate.

Like food. You don't like it you don't eat it.

But hating someone means to give them trouble I think. As in the thread about hating homosexuals.

The hostility comes from resentment. Resentment is defined as; Bitter indignation at having been treated unfairly. But it is the one hating that is causing another to feel he is being treated unfairly. It doesn't make sense.

Hate is unfair because everyone has a right to life by virtue of the fact they are alive.

I was wondering about how can I forgive a person for hating me?

I know hate is dislike. Is it a feeling, a thought, or both? Does the thought cause the feeling or does the feeling cause the thought?

It is caused either by one's own bad experience or it is learned by the retelling of someone else's bad experience. That I know.

The reason why I say can hate be forgiven is because it is badness that a person keeps doing. Isn't to forgive hate like forgiving a crime in the making?

I wouldn't consider there to be anything to forgive in the first place when someone hates me. Rather something to understand. I might or might not be able to understand why someone hates me, but i wouldn't be able to forgive them as i see nothing to forgive.

Like i said hate doesn't necessitate actions. Their feelings are their own. And not all actions are a wrong by me, so to speak.

What is best in my view is to attempt to be both understanding and aware of the person that hates you. As it will help you come to term with the fact that they do, and help you protect yourself from any possible manifestations of their hate.

Thank you. That is an amazing answer Badran. It is hard for me to believe that people who claim to worship the God of love seem to me to be the worst haters. That is what I mean by forgiving them. I agree with you it is very hard to forgive something that calls for no forgiveness. I understand your answer. It is good. I will keep working on understanding.

To be loving another person who is for God is to be doing kindness for him. Love is kind.

Matthew 25:35-40
35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

BUT if the person of God is left alone to fend for himself, is it the opposite of love?

Is hate the opposite of love?

I thought of words for what I am trying to say. The attitude I think I see is this:

I do not personally care if you live or die but the Lord cares so I care too. I hope that you all get the same heavenly blessing that I hope I will get and this hope is the way I show my love for you. Of course the person to whom the hope is directed has no idea it is there because hope is that which we hold dear to our own hearts and nobody can know the heart except God and to whom God allows the seeing of it.

I hope I am wrong but I see Christianity as the people looking out for their own interests. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes love. It says "love does not look for it's own interest". Is it hating to be looking for one's own interest? That's my question.

I appreciate everyone who reads my posts. If you do and you respond I probably cannot acknowledge your response because I won't be home for almost a week. If the doctor will let me out.....I'm kidding.

Bible says love others as you love yourself so there is room for self interest at least in a loving sort of way. The idea is we should be more worried about saving/correcting the self before trying point the finger at others.

Ambivalence is the opposite of love. Love and hate are both passion.

Hate enables a person to feel better about themself.

If, in your own mind, you put down an entire race, religion, or other group, it means that you are better than they are.

From Wikipedia "Hatred"

René Descartes viewed hate as an awareness that something is bad combined with an urge to withdraw from it

This is my experience with all Christians I have met.
