Vitamin B and depression.

Yeah the trick IS finding an honest one. Fortunately I know a few. You can come see mine if you like Jeff, but I think NZ might be a bit of a trip!

Doctors will always tell you not to go to a herbalist, but that's because they like to keep their business. I find most medication is more harmful than herbal remedies. Herbal remedies usually take longer to work, but in the long run they're better for your body (less damaging when you're not mixing em with chemical drugs) and generally do a better job.

I don't know about depression...but I know that vitamin B6 is linked to increasing energy levels. I haven't read through all the posts, so forgive me if I'm repeating what's already been said...

Has she tried Saint John's Wart? I CAN vouch for Saint John's Wart. I've used it in the past and although the positive effects do not ccur overnight...Saint John's Wart is a nice alternative, if you prefer to bypass the medicinal remedies. I've actually had several doctors, when speaking with them about depression advise me to continue with Saint John's Wart, since I was having success with it as opposed to writing me out a prescription. After the birth of my first baty, for a short period of time, I did take an anti depressant but I feel the Saint John's Wart worked better for me and it didn't feel like such a shock to my system.

I think that B6 is probably a good idea.It might be better to take a B complex though because all the B vits work well together and can help to support the nervous system.

I know st johns Wort has already been mentioned and I have heard very good feed back about it from customers in the health shop where I work. I wanted to give a word of warning though to any women out there that are taking the pill. St Johns Wort may cause the pill to be less effective than it should be.

Just because somthing is herbal or natural,doesnt mean that it is always safe for everyone. So it is always best to check with a Doctor before taking them.

In real simple terms Vitamin B helps the brain fire properly. It allows the electrical impulses of the brain to connect with other parts of the brain.

I agree, but then too, drugs should not be used to treat nutritional deficiency disease which can include depression.

I didn't want to say that out loud but I agree. My depression, which was SEVERE for more than a decade has become far more. . . . tolerable. . . . easier to deal with, (something like that) since a change of diet and an increase in the amount of water I drink. Various herbs are helping get my digestive system back in order.

Eat 3 times as much veg and fruit as anything else and drink at least 1/2 a gallon of water a day. It's amazing the difference it's made. We are omnivores after all ;)

My wife's depression is a result of 38 years of abuse. Her mother didn't want her, her step mother beat her, wouldn'l even let her bathe. had to go to school dirty. Ridiculed by other children. Then got into a relationship for 8 years where she was beaten on a regular basis. Ribs broke, teeth smashed, strangled, raped. Cat murdered in front of you. Takes a toll on your 'well-being.'

Both my wife and I have tried St John's wort, and it did nothing for us (I guess it depends on the individual); just as Valarian did nothing for me either, although |I understand that many people take it and have good results:-

The underground organs of members of the genus Valeriana (Valerianaceae), as well as related genera such as Nardostachys, are used in the traditional medicine of many cultures as mild sedatives and tranquillizers and to aid the induction of sleep. V. officinalis is the species most commonly used in northern Europe and still retains its official pharmacopoeial status although it is most commonly encountered as an ingredient of herbal medicines. This plant is still the subject of considerable research aimed at establishing the chemical and pharmacological basis of the activity which has been clearly shown in a number of animal and clinical studies. The constituents of the volatile oil are very variable due to population differences in genetics and to environmental factors. The major constituents include the monoterpene bornyl acetate and the sesquiterpene valerenic acid, which is characteristic of the species, in addition to other types of sesquiterpene. Some of these have been shown to have a direct action on the amygdaloid body of the brain and valerenic acid has been shown to inhibit enzyme-induced breakdown of GABA in the brain resulting in sedation. The non-volatile monoterpenes known as valepotriates were first isolated in 1966 and contribute to the overall activity by possessing sedative activity based on the CNS although the mode of action is not clearly known. The valepotriates themselves act as prodrugs which are transformed into homobaldrinal which has been shown to reduce the spontaneous motility of mice. More recent studies have shown that aqueous extracts of the roots contain appreciable amounts of GABA which could directly cause sedation but there is some controversy surrounding the bioavailability of this compound. Another recent finding is the presence of a lignan, hydroxypinoresinol, and its ability to bind to benzodiazepine receptors. Valerian is a good example of both the negative and positive aspects of herbal drugs. The considerable variation in its composition and content as well as the instability of some of its constituents pose serious problems for standardization but the range of components which contribute to its overall activity suggest that it may correct a variety of underlying causes of conditions which necessitate a general sedative or tranquillizing effect.​

Michel : Valeria and St John's are quite addictive, and carry major side effects. Being without them is probably a good thing. :bounce Do you drink chamomile?

I here ya jeff. Getting yourself feeling better is an accross the board thing, and sometimes things that seem small can go a long way.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their advice in here.
Im using small amounts of St Johns Wart, just as a mood lifter, and also Vits B 6 and 12​
I cant stand the thought of going to the doc and explaining how I feel, to be put on more medication... so ill try all the tips here... Thanks again Rebecca

Yep. My closest friend has had a terrible life and she has endless health problems. It goes deep, very deep. Even still having friends, eating well, plenty of exercise, therapy, massage, loving kindness, etc. all these things make a difference.

Yeah that happens. Knowing how delicate things can be I feel devastated for my friend when she's doing really well then someone or something knocks her back. When I see how badly her family treat her for instance I want to shake them and scream but all I can do is calmly try again and again to act as a mediator.

Thank you, SW. Rebecca (Evenstar) is such a good person. Would never harm a soul. Some people seem to take joy in hurting others. There are such good people on this board. Just takes one to screw up a delicate balance. My thanks go out to all the people that have supported Rebecca. You know who you are. My day will be spent Frubaling you Because I can. :)
