What's Important to Christians?

Zork

New Member
I'm trying to better understand the diversity of Christian beliefs. I have a question for Christians on this list: what issues, concerns or goals (political, social, cultural and/or personal) are the most important to you?

Think about what problems you'd most like to see solved. What changes would best improve society. Or where you donate money or time. Or what you'd work on during a paid sabbatical. Or what worries you the most about modern life. Give me your top 5-7 or so.

I don't intend to criticize, but I might ask questions to aid my understanding. If you're new to this thread, make your list before reading that of others.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Louise. I hope I don't get pounded for my beliefs Knockout but I SOOO love to talk about them...

Politically, I'm pretty conservative. I like the whole concept of SMALL government. I always vote for the candidate that I feel has the better God conscience. And that's really difficult...because you know...politics in general is all about compromise and I don't view the Christian life as one of compromise. Everything that we encounter, do or say is either Godly or it's not...there really is no middle ground...

I'm pro-life. And I know a lot of people would love to fling poo at me for feeling that way but I'm just speaking honestly from the heart. I'm not too fond of gun control as I feel that responsible Americans have the right to protect themselves and criminals are criminals...they'll find ways to commit crime regardless.

I'm not too fond of tax increases. They give me heartburn. And I'm sick and tired of all the crappy construction on the roads here in my home state. Makes me irritable.

I'm a community minded person. I ABHORE BIG government. I don't want the government involved in every flipping aspect of my life. I actually like the concept of capitalism. And I'm truly proud to be an American.

I would like to see more unity within communities. I think every individual needs to give themselves completely to God...remember that they are the hands and feet of God and pray on how they can assist people within their own communities each and every day. If everyone makes it a personal goal to pray on doing SOMETHING positive, which reflect the love and compassion of God...can you imagine?

I also believe very much that when you have the freedom of choice...you have the obligation to exercise responsibility. And I don't think morality is such a terrible concept...regardless of your station in life.

My goal in this life is to love as many as possible. It seems that most of the divisions are a result of people wanting to tell other people what to do! Godly love eliminates this need to create rules and such to try and control people.

Blast! You beat me to it!:D

Louise, what is important to me ? Love, as NetDoc has said; tollerance towards people who are different from me. To try and do my best to change those things in life I feel are wrong (and basically that means anything which makes people unhappy) - and to lead the kind of life that maybe one day, my sons might say " My Dad was a good man, I wish I could follow his example"...............But that's a high target to aim for.

"Aim high, and you might hit 'acceptability" - is my motto.;)

Personal Goal: To pattern my life and character after the life of Jesus Christ.

Social Goals: Must be guided by reason, but I am able to view some social goals as an expression of my faith.

Enrich the lives of people:
1) Care for the poor
2) Work for better healthcare for all people
3) Provide non-invasive witness for the Christian message of hope and redemption
4) Social justice (eg, housing, police activity, etc)
5) Be active in social ethics

The only important issue for me is to live a more Christ filled life...and I believe the rest falls in place after.

But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?

1 John 3:17

Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves purses which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near, nor moth destroys.

Luke 12:33

And [John the Baptist] would answer and say to them, "Let the man with two tunics share with him who has none, and let him who has food do likewise."

Luke 3:11

I think my main concer is to accept the unifying force in one God and for the undesirable experiences accumulated to gradually disappear. We are either for or against unity so for something new to be born we need to pass from a sense of being isolated into a realization of oneness with everything.

One of the main ideas that Christians believe in is the idea of forgiveness. It's something that I hold very dear. It means: No matter what anybody does to you you should forgive them, even if it is the same person who offends you.

And another idea is love. Love not only your friends but also love your enemies (in other words pray for them)

Also to lend a helping hand

The Story of the Good Samaritan Luke 10: 25-37:
25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

26 "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"

27 He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"

28 "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

30 In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'

36 "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" 37 The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."
Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."
