Beauty Contests - A thing of the past ?

With the emancipation of women, and the change of roles in society, have beauty contests disappeared (or are they entered into far less often than they used to be) ?

Are they debasing for women ?

2 sides to every coin i suppose.
I think that beauty pageants and "talent contests" are an excuse to get into a pretty dress, have someone do your makeup and hair, and meet new people. (having said that, im a baton twirler, and i do pageant-like-things like that)

On the other side, that should not be a sterio-type for all women. I think we can all see that. Im not truly sure if pageants are injustices... maybe someone can explain that to me...

Michel,

I don't know if they are a thing of the past or not, but I certainly hope that they are. Along with that, add The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Meet Your New Mommy, Who Wants to Marry a Millionare, and all other "entertainment" of that ilk.

There was a time when every self-respecting woman who had a daughter brought her up to be a beautiful child, girl, woman; it was almost as if the girls were being 'groomed' for contests.

I take it that has all finished ? (I don't quite see it being a part of the modern Culture)

They are "scholarship pagents" not "beauty contests."

I can't see how it's not debasing to women and I hope that they are a thing of the past.

the first point is true, but that was a long time ago, and far far away.

If it's all finished, what are the miss america, miss world, miss universe pageants?

They still take place ? - I honestly can't say I have seen anything like that for years; maybe I just 'switched myself off' ; I always found them demeaning for the women, and rather absurd.....:bonk:

I am pretty sure that Donald Trump bought one or more of those contests in an effort to groom future brides, but I may have received some misinformation there.

I don't think beauty contests will ever go away entirely. Beauty is too important to us. But I think society has changed a bit in that it no longer finds it acceptable to rank beauty as more important than anything else.

I think I remember seeing one (and this was still a few years ago) - instead of the women's ambitions being to marry, and have one little girl and one little boy..........

It was a case of "When I get my master's degree in Art, I want to work for Charities in Africa"...........sorry to be a cynic, but it just seemed even more absurd than the original set up.

I don't know if beauty contests are a thing of the past, but I'm very proud of my recent acceptance into www.beautifulpeople.net. :D

It's good for my ego.

No. They're still around. Some have mentioned the biggies, but there are a lot of more "local" ones that girls participate in from the time they are very young.

Probably not to those who win. They must get an ego boost from it ;)

I personally don't care for beauty contest or any of the like. I think it just feeds the already distorted view of beauty we have and gets rid of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. It is telling us what is beauty and who is beautiful. It fuels anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders. It feeds on the self esteem of regular women and tells them that they are ugly. So they cut and mutilate their bodies in the persuit of someones view of perfection. What do these pagents tell our daughters? I don't see the importance or the need for these to go on and really do think they should go away.

That's why the question and answer portion is so stupid. They are great to look at, but absolute punishment to listen to.
