Gosh there is some posh people :D Me DRESS UP thats a laugh.
When I first joined a church, I rushed out to buy dresses.... but soon came to realize its not me.. im not someone who trys to blend in with everyone else... just not me.
Jesus would not care if I wore rags.. why should anyone else? jeans, or smartish trousers (pants) and a tidy top.. trainers.. hate smart shoes too :D

When I was younger my parents used to make me dress up. Which I hated of course, but I did anyway. They would tell me that it was out of respect of the sacred church and god. This I agreed with at the time. However, one day a poor man came into the church. He was dirty, and had a horrid stench to him. He was dressed in ragged clothes (not fit for church), and was clearly sick. The whole congregation turned to look at this gastly man as if he was satan. But all he wanted to do was sit and hear mass. And at this time I understood...

Did this man have less respect for the church or god than say the doctors who wore armani suits? No, of course not.

Did he deserve to hear mass, or even more, contribute to it? YES!!

I believe it is within the poor and sick that god resides most often. Not in the fancy dress of the "respectful."
I agree with everything you have said. In my case, however, I have nice looking clothes, and if I were to go to church in sweat pants, it would be because I was lazy. I don't look down on those who don't dress up. I have no idea what their situation is. That, and I really don't think it matters to God. For me though, I would feel that I was being disrespectful if I didn't dress up.

I grew up in a church where everyone was dressed to the nine's every Sunday. As a girl who did not like dresses, I was not thrilled come Sunday morning and my mom would make me wear one.

My church now is much more relaxed about dress. Some dress a little nicer, but that's because they do anyway and others just wear what they have and are comfortable in. In the summer, we even wear shorts.

I've been in the habit of wearing kahkis and a nice shirt and tie to church. There's a lot of pressure that the nice shirt be "white" in the LDS church, but I'm a little bit of a rebel (quit laughing) and like to wear blue, green, brown, or whatever color I feel like. My grandpa says its because I'm a peacock and I'm trying to get all the girls attention. I just hate conforming. I do wear a white shirt when I am going to be blessing or passing the sacrament though.

Some girls from England are my neighbors and they said they were surprised at how every one was dressed down here - kahkis and stuff. They said that everyone in their wards in England wear their nicest suits, with white shirts and ties.

Even within a church, the culture is different from place to place.

I don't wear my suit much anymore - mostly cuz I've got a wife and a desk job. It doesn't fit :biglaugh:

Rebecca also has 5 large tattoos and 3 body piercings. She covers them all for church because of the looks she gets. Seems some Christians look down on that. Some tell her that it's a sin. Their a part of who she is, and I think it's bad that she is forced to cover them for church. The Catholics tend to look at who she is on the inside before judging her tats.

I was once told that Nuns often have dirty habits, made me consider attending a seminary until I realised it was a piece of clothing...

Traditionally we humans have always dressed according tot he occasion that we are about to attend. When we go to worship, which is a specific act that a person takes on, what we wear and how we present ourselves says a lot about what we think of the occasion. Like it or not, when it can be helped and contralled by you personally, what you wear and how you look is a direct reflection upon who you are and what you are thinking about what you are doing. To your story above I will just say this, as my Great Grandmother used to tell me, "there is no shame in being poor, but there is shame in being dirty."

Do you 'dress up' for church? Do you wear a dress or if your male wear a suit and tie? Do you think it's important to do so?
I always wear a tie. I wear suits too, but not every week. I just think it's respectful. I believe we should always put our best before God.

If you do, what do you think of people that don't? (Please be honest.)
While I make it a habit not to make assumptions about what people are thinking, I do think it's disrespectful to wear something like shorts and a t-shirt to services. The way I see it, it shows a lack of respect to walk in so casually dressed for such a serious thing like praising our God.

I usually don the Dockers/Polo-type shirt, no suit for me. Since most of the people in our church are older and do wear their 'Sunday Best', the mostly younger people who dress more casually do stand out, I notice them right away, but I don't think any less of them. Afterall...they did make the effort to attend and praise the Lord. :clap

Since Jesus wore a robe and sandals everywhere he went, I have never understood the 'requirement' that people wear their fancy clothes to church. You don't think he'd teach us to turn anyone away who didn't meet a certain dress code...do ya?;)

The way I see it is, how we dress is for other people and for ourselves. God sees me in the shower, when I'm sick and lying on the couch in my sweats and when I'm dirty and sweaty after a workout. I'd like to think God is more concerned with what is in my heart that than what is covering my body to keep me warm and protected and to be in line with social norms, (i.e. not going out in public naked).

When I went to church I never dressed up, when I was serving I would wear a robe over my jeans,
But no Never pulled the stops out, The old people did though I guess I view it as very old fashioned

EEWRED, i totally disagree. Just because someone dresses better then I does not mean they love God more then me. Wear your suit and tie if you feel comfortable it that, but judge me because I don't? 'For the Lord sees not as a man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance. But the Lord looks at the heart.' 1 Samuel 16:9

I think people who dress up for church, do so because everyone else does.
I call this been a SHEEP BAA! Ill do it because Mrs Jones does it.... Mrs Jones leader of the flock :D
Do you think God would want you uncomfortable in his house? Everyone rushes home, takes off their posh clothes... this tells me ITS NOT YOU :D You do it for show!
