Some possibilities:

1) In most societies, people are discriminated against for being different. Jesus was trying to get across a message that was different enough as it was without having people put undue importance onto unimportant physical differences.
2) As has already been suggested, urinating.

Imagining God as a being in our own image seems somewhat prideful and presumptuous, but I can understand the psychological need for it among the hoi polloi.

I suppose the amoebiods of Rigel 4, or the fungoid colony-plops of Hephaestus Minor picture Him in their own image as well.

One should never underestimate the need of most people for an image of God. I think that's well shown by the fact that anyone can take seriously a debate over the "correct" image.

I find that "in our own image" leads to more acceptance of one man being better than another man.

What a silly question, and yet I read the entire thread. Sex is for flesh and blood and God has niether. Here is the closest response from the scriptures:

Mark 12:24 Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!" NIV

Scripture must be interpreted. The creeds are an excellent place to start, because they are what define orthodoxy and seperate differing Christian groups. The creed that I cited unites all orthodox, Protestant, and RC Christians by belief in the Trinity, the Incarnation of Christ, and the resurrection.

Try this:

John 1.14
14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

1 Cor 15
21For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

Luke 24.31
31And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. After the resurrection of Jesus, people recognized him as a man and not as an andorgenous spirit.

We can see from the Scriptures that Jesus was God incarnate, a man who was God and was resurrected a man. Just because Jesus said that people won't have sex in heaven does not mean that they don't have genitalia.

Scripture doesn't need to be interpreted: just understood! :D

Great scriptures: wrong conclusion! They recognised Jesus after THEIR EYES WERE OPENED. It wasn't readily apparent.

But we were talking about God and not Jesus.

I believe He does. We were created in God's image(in my belief), and so we all have penises and vaginas(sorry to be so crude), so pretty much, yes, I believe He does.

So God is a hermaphrodite? What color is his skin? His eyes? Broad or thin nose? What haircolor?

Which of us are more in God's image than the others?
