So, presumably (being the opposite of women) men live to kill, consume the resources, make a filthy mess and provide non-essential services ?

Because nature favored sexual reproduction to asexual reproduction in large animals.
Pretty much.
I'd prefer it if humans were not of two sexes, but hey, we don't always get what we want. It would also be pretty darned cool to be able to lay eggs.
In mammals, the question might be better put, "what is the meaning of men?", since all mammals begin life as females.
