Do video games effect religion?

Rex

This is an interesting topic I think. With all of the blood and guts and gore and fantasy play with games.

Does this effect childrens religion and morals ethics?

No true effect. I grew up playing video games, and this has not affected my morals or ethics at all. For instance, I have played many hunting games, and yet, I abhor hunting. I've played postal 2, and yet, I don't go and shoot people with shotguns and smoke catnip. :p

There are always people blaming video games for the problems of society. Our 9 year old plays violent playstation games occasionally...but he doesn't go out stealing cars and beating up passers by, because he's very aware that it's all make believe.
It's the same with movies...from the time he was 2 he could look at a movie and tell you what other movies he had seen the actors in. Our 5 year olds favourite movie when she was 2 was Sleepy Hollow, our nearly 3year olds favourite last year was Resident Evil. It's how you present the thing to the child as much as anything else. If a film or video game is going to influence your behaviour, then you already have problems and you're just waiting to be set off.
There was a specific case of a young girl here in Australia in the last couple of years (I believe she was about 10-11 or so) who went to a friends slumber party, where they watched Scream on video. She had a psychotic episode on the way home, and her parents and others spent quite a bit of media time movie violence bashing. Tell me that wasn't a child with pre-existing problems waiting for a trigger.

I don't know about that, Rex. I think the video games are a reflection of a society that is already obsessed with violence. Does it create more? I don't think so. I'm not a big gamer, but I know some people who are, and they are not violent in any way.

People are so quick to blame video games/media for the random bits of violence that few can explain. You know what causes crazy crap like this? Bad parenting. They can hide behind mature games all they like but it doesnt change the fact that they suck at parenting and why their kid has recently spilled some local blood.

There have been many things I learned from videogames. Coordination, patience, the reward of accomplishment, the ability to look at problems in a different perspective. I think people (parents and the media mostly) just need something or someone to blame other then themselves.
