Miriam Makeba - Chove Chuva (Live cover 1966) - YouTube

I just found out she died from a heart attack after performing a song which has been one of my favourites ever since I'm a kid:

Wikipedia said:
On 9 November 2008, she became ill while taking part in a concert organized to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a mafia-like organisation local to the Region of Campania. The concert was being held in Castel Volturno, near Caserta, Italy. Makeba suffered a heart attack after singing her hit song "Pata Pata", and was taken to the "Pineta Grande" clinic where doctors were unable to revive her.

Ah, the advantage of the UK huh? Spread out all over the world. :p Amazing that someone born on an African island and raised in India with Persian heritage can be British. :p To me though...Freddie transcended borders of all kinds.
lol. That was the empire for you. A lot of it has been handed back since then. I think Freddie had an amazing voice too.

Robert Plant, Bob Dylan, Freddie King, John Fogerty and of course, J.J. Cale. I also like Hugh Laurie's voice.

That new girl on the scene, from X-factor, Melanie Amaro, I think she should go far. She has one hell of a voice and seems to be able to sing anything.

Chris Cornell is my favorite male vocalist though I do believe that belting has thrown his voice off. That and age. But he can still sing and I find some of his songs with Audioslave that he performs solo/acoustic to be tremendous.

I cannot fairly judge among female vocalists. So many of them with different voices just astound me and quite frankly female vocalists are my favorite even though I must give male vocalists I know of a greater technical ability. Sam Cooke, Chris Cornell, etc. are great but one single song from Patty Griffin, Loreena McKennitt, Tori Amos, etc. will just melt me.

Dang, so many beat me to my favorite - Tori Amos.

Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink were CD's I would just play over and over and over again for her singing and her piano composition and execution. I saw her in concert twice, and she is simply brilliant as a musician and performance artist.

I still pull her up on my iPod whenever I'm starved for vocal beauty and depth. My favorite from her usually is "Yes Anastasia."

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
*I liked Susan Ottaviano's deep tones.

*Also Kathryn's choice of Billie Holiday was a special one as well. Very rare to come across talented people like that. Much like Amy Winehouse which imo was a modern day version of Billie Holiday. Both having terrific voices with not so terrific lives. RIP gals.

*Darius Rucker

*Pauly Fuemana of OMC....

if i had to pick the top vocalist gotta go with the great Jocelyn Brown
(Somebody Else's Guy, Love's Gonna Get You, and several others)

Title pending.
Some great choices here. Good call on Bjork, Tori Amos, Mark Lanegan, Tom Waits. I'll add to that Antony (from Antony and the Johnsons), Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Eva Cassidy. Oh, and nobody's mentioned Jeff Buckley, which is surprising to me, and rather a shame, so here's a video:

Bon Scott was an amazing vocalist, as was Kurt Cobain, Tom Petty and Steve Perry, depending on the music you like. Right now, Marcus Mumford is a great one, Ben Howard, and Bon Iver as well.
