Wahabism

This sub-school of Islam seems to be very strict, they don't even allow women to drive cars.
Since the Saudis support Wahabism with their oil-money, it gains influence even in countries were it didn't exist before (Indonesia).
What do Muslims think about Wahabism, is it an exaggeration?

There's no such thing, imo..
I don't think that whether it's lawful for women to drive in Saudi Arabia has much to with Islam..
..nor for that matter, a Muslim's creed.

If you are trying to connect 'extremism' with the fundamental belief that 'the Oneness of God'
should not be compromised, then I wouldn't agree

? Women are driving. While I have not been in all middle east countries - the ones I have witnessed all have women drivers.

Salam Brother,

Since the Saudi Grand Mufti made it a religious edict to ban sisters in Islam from driving, then it has become a religious issue*. One that needs to be opposed.

Again, one needs to stress the fact that a 'fatwa' merely means 'opinion' in Arabic. We should always scrutinize and rationalize another person's opinion on a subject matter because human beings are bound to err, including scholars and 'Grand' muftis. In this matter, I do not see the 'Grand' mufti of Saudi Arabia's opinion to hold much water.

*I would have posted a link to the source if it were possible for me to post urls.In any case, we can just Google that piece of information.

Peace.

Didn't Wahabis even destroy the grave of Mohammed?

I told you .. imo, there's no such thing as "a wahabi"!
Do you mean "the saudis" ??

If you believe there is such a thing as "a wahabi", perhaps you'd like to tell me what their creed is?
How is different from 'mainstream Islam', for example?

I was of the opinion that Wahabism was a school that developed in Saudi Arabia and came to power when the Saudi family became the royal dynasty.

Salam brother, you don't need to go in so deep, you know what her question means.

Their teachings are not based on the 4 madhhabs but instead on the teachings of Muhammed bin Abdul Wahhab. You know these things right?

No his grave is in place and well looked after.

It's the graves of his companions that they are destroying as well as all Islamic history and places of significance on their claim that people are committing shirk and worshiping the graves of his companions. That is against Islamic law, it is not Islamic to destroy the graves of the Sahaba because an idiot wants to worship graves which cannot benefit him nor harm him.

On the other hand you can see their hypocrisy. The consider themselves to be Salafis, better than everyone else, and thus it's OK to preserve the pens, glasses and a few other things which belonged to their Wahabi Saudi Scholars. (I don't have anything against the scholars, I just hate the hypocrisy and the notion of them being the elite while others are innovators)

Are you inquiring about them as a result of what's happening in Tunisia by any chance?

Yes that is true, it existed earlier before that though, but that's when it found a 'home' and now anyone who becomes a Wahhabi gets support from Saudi Arabia.

In my home country in order to spread Wahhabism they pay people from their oil money for having accepted to follow their thinking. It's the same everywhere else.

My brother .. this is backbiting .. probably just what the OP wanted
"would you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother"??

I say again, there is no such thing a s " a wahabi" , imo..
There is Islam .. there is no "Hanafi-ism" "Muslim-ism" etc. .. the fact that modern day saudia Arabia has a history which includes the religious scholar Abdul Wahab, does not make anybody "a Wahabi" !

I normally hear this term used in a derrogatory way, implying that those who follow Qur'an & Hadith without being 'Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi or Hanabali' are deluded..

They certainly are NOT!! Is there a Hadith that states that Muhammad (peace be with him) said that you must be one of these 4 schools of thought?
Of course not!! These scholars weren't even born in the time of Muhammad & the Sahaba..

So please .. no back-biting .. JazakAllah

Please don't take offence from my posts, I have no intention on being rude in any way.

As for the quoted part of my statement, my thinking was exactly the same as yours before I heard about things like this from people who had witnessed such cases of people receiving payment for their 'religiousness'.

I don't want to go into it too much as it is a whole different topic and requires more than a 3 line statement to explain it all.

And to be honest I don't know all there is to know about Wahhabism and I don't hate those who follow the teachings of Ibn Abdul Wahhab, but the things which I know of (destruction and not maintaining the graves of the Sahaba, destruction of historical Islamic sites etc) are what I hate very much. I would destroy the entire Saudi kingdom for what they have done and are doing if Allah gave me the power.

I don't have a problem with them having different views. It is absolute injustice to support any group that calls itself Muslim but causes disorder and destruction. This is not backbiting but clarifying that Muslims with pure hearts to not promote such destructive behaviour done under the name of Islam. I don't know where in Islam you are taught to defend other Muslims who are doing something wrong.

No, it's more a general interest because I often read that the Saudis spend their oil money to spread their regional form of Islam.
So I wanted to know what other Muslims think about this, if that is ok or rather not.

N..I often read that the Saudis spend their oil money to spread their regional form of Islam.

Well, what would you expect them to promote? Christianity, or somebody else's interpretation of Islam?

Again, you imply that there's something sinister going on .. there is not. It's all national / political tactics employed by satan, fueled by envy of others who have been given this great test of mineral wealth!

In fact, the whole world is being tested, and all are guilty. Human beings are all as bad as one another:
they are mostly greedy for the life of this world,
..except for those who make their priority, the obedience and love of their Creator, the Most High

People who hold a extreme ideaology of islam are mostly reffered to Wahhabi who look similar to Salfi'st but in the general teachings they do not go off path of ''Sunni'' teaching for example Wahhabi's do not belief on coexisting with other religions while most Sunni's do belief this. I belief the Wahhabis came from the Rich Arabs in Saudi who just wanted to control the people, the government in Syria is mostly Wahhabi and are doing the killing towards Sunnis, shia's and Christians.

I would even say that the Wahhabi community is not upholding Sharia in Saudi and the general muslim would agree, for example its not ''Sharia'' that a woman cannot drive (so its a self made law), Interest banks are not allowed in Sharia (but they still have them), You should not punish the poor for stealing only the rich according to Sharia (but the opposite happens), You should feed all the poor (only the rich get feed), You should be a just ruler (Justice by ignorance? or just by doing just) The list can go on and on...

If Saudi would just give the people its oil-money what they deserve nobody had to work for a single day in there entire live any-more.. You can see there is no justice in there system.

What did I tell you .. it's all greed!
Forget about "the oil money" .. all satan wants to do is corrupt people in any way he can.
Actually, satan doesn't have to do much with most people .. they're already sick .. they're never satisfied until they have the same as the rich people..
Would Muhammad (peacebe with him) wanted that? No! When he saw what was going to happen to his nation, he wept

Yes they should spread wealth to poor. No that doesn't mean everyone sit idle and not work. Arab countries wasted themselves eating wealth and not putting in any effort. They got left behind for this very reason. Islam teaches to do work, put effort, earn your income.
