Yet more questions from Halcyon...

Halcyon

Lord of the Badgers
Sorry, but as much as i find Mormonism fascinating, i find it just as confusing

I've got loads of little questions, i've been thinking of them all day at work, so hopefully i'll remember most of them. Ok, here goes....

1. Do you believe you worship the same God as other Christians, or do you believe they worship a false or corrupted image of God?

2. Do you believe God created the universe or just the Earth and/or our solar system?

3. If the nearest star to heaven is Kolob, is heaven a planet orbiting Kolob, or is there a gateway to heaven near Kolob or is it something else?

4. (From a conversation with Aqualung, i might be remembering it falsely) If God was once a man, who or what created Him? Does He have his own God, and if so why do you not worship the highest God?

5. If God is a physical being, how can He be all places at once i.e. omnipresent? How can He hear all our prayers and respond if necessary?

6. Leading on from 5., if God does have physical form why did he appear to Moses as a burning bush.

7. Has God ever walked the Earth? Was He literally sitting in the tent that Moses used to visit to speak with Him?

8. Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is within us (Lk 17.21). What is the LDS interpretation of this teaching?

9. Do you believe the events described in Revelation have already happened, or have yet to pass?

10. Do we know the name of God's wife?

11. Do you believe Jesus was married?

12. Who or what are the Angels in your faith?

13. Where is Hell or the residence of Satan?

14. If God is physical, was he born of a physical mother, will he ever die?

15. (This one is an odd one and stems from my biological background) If God has a perfect but physical body and does not eat, as eating is only necessary for a body that is inefficiant. Does he have a digestive system, and if so, why?

16. Did God's wife become pregant with Jesus and give birth to him in the same way as Mary did? If so, was Jesus born as an infant in heaven and grow into an adult in heaven?

17. What do you believe the second coming of Jesus will be like? Will he be born again as a man, or come in his original form?

Um, that's all i can remember for now - there are quite a few.

I don't mean to seem like i'm mocking you with these questions, it's just how my mind thinks. Your religion seems to have answers for most questions thrown at it.

Just a few questions... :)

Here are some of the one's that I know off the top of my head. I honestly haven't even considered all of your questions.

7. Yes, I believe he walked and talked with many prophets, including Adam.
9. Some have probably already happened, others will still happen.
10. We just refer to her as "Heavenly Mother," but honestly it isn't mentioned much.
11. Yes, I believe that Jesus is married, but it is a personal belief. I don't know of any specific doctrine regarding it.
13. I don't know where Hell is. It's just referred to as "Outer Darkness"
17. He will come in his original form - the same way he left.

Thanks Jonny, i have another one form a post i just read, lol :D cheeky i know

18. What are the different rewards receive in heaven, and who gets what?

1. We kind of worship the same God as other Christians. We do not accept the creeds that most Christians use to define God, and our God has different attributes than the God that many Christians worship. I would never tell someone that they worship a false or corrupted image of God. Everyone has the right to worship as they please. I would only say that I believe that our God is biblical. They would say the same of their God.

2. I've never really pondered this. I would say that God created our universe, but there isn't really much about this in our scriptures or church teachings. God created the heavens and the earth.

3. I don't know anything about Kolob other than it is near to God.

4. I would guess that God has a God which created him. We worship our creator.

5. Mormons don't believe that God the Father or Son are omnipresent. The Holy Ghost is omnipresent.

6. I don't know if the burning bush is figuritive or literal. At the time that God (Christ) appeared to Moses he didn't have a body.

12. Angels are servants from God who have already passed on. LDS.org states, "There are two kinds of beings in heaven who are called angels: those who are spirits and those who have bodies of flesh and bone. Angels who are spirits have not yet obtained a body of flesh and bone, or they are spirits who have once had a mortal body and are awaiting resurrection. Angels who have bodies of flesh and bone have either been resurrected from the dead or translated."

14. God will not die. He is immortal. He was probably born of a mother, just like any of us were. We know that Jesus Christ was born of a mother.

15. God's physical body is not the same as ours. The scriptures state that he has has a body of "flesh and bones." It is interpreted that God does not have blood. I doubt that he needs to eat, but I'm sure he can if he'd like to.

18. This one is complicated. I would read this chapter in our scriptures for information on it:

Of the top of my head here are my answers

1. Do you believe you worship the same God as other Christians, or do you believe they worship a false or corrupted image of God?
We worship the same God as the other Christians

2. Do you believe God created the universe or just the Earth and/or our solar system?
I believe he created this universe, and I believe there are limitless universes

3. If the nearest star to heaven is Kolob, is heaven a planet orbiting Kolob, or is there a gateway to heaven near Kolob or is it something else?
Can't tell you off the top of my head

4. (From a conversation with Aqualung, i might be remembering it falsely) If God was once a man, who or what created Him? Does He have his own God, and if so why do you not worship the highest God?

I believe that God was once as man is and man might be as God is now.

5. If God is a physical being, how can He be all places at once i.e. omnipresent? How can He hear all our prayers and respond if necessary?

I just know He can. I can't give you any other answer other then this one.

6. Leading on from 5., if God does have physical form why did he appear to Moses as a burning bush.

Because if He would have appeared in His full form and glory Moses would have withered literally like a burning bush.

7. Has God ever walked the Earth? Was He literally sitting in the tent that Moses used to visit to speak with Him?
Can't answer of the top of my head.

8. Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is within us (Lk 17.21). What is the LDS interpretation of this teaching?

Can't answer of the top of my head

9. Do you believe the events described in Revelation have already happened, or have yet to pass?

Some have come to pass and some haven't.

10. Do we know the name of God's wife?
No

11. Do you believe Jesus was married?
Yes

12. Who or what are the Angels in your faith?
Heavenly beings, some have lived on this earth, some haven't

13. Where is Hell or the residence of Satan?
Outer Darkness, but Satan doesn't dwell there, he dwells here on earth in a spiritual form

14. If God is physical, was he born of a physical mother, will he ever die?
Yes and No. I believe He was born of a physical mother, but He has over come death and become God so He doesn't die.

15. (This one is an odd one and stems from my biological background) If God has a perfect but physical body and does not eat, as eating is only necessary for a body that is inefficiant. Does he have a digestive system, and if so, why?
Yes, because men needed to eat and men were created in His image

16. Did God's wife become pregant with Jesus and give birth to him in the same way as Mary did? If so, was Jesus born as an infant in heaven and grow into an adult in heaven?

Can't answer off the top of my head

17. What do you believe the second coming of Jesus will be like? Will he be born again as a man, or come in his original form?

I believe He will come as a full grown man. I believe it will be glorious and terrifying. Glorious for the righteous and terrifying for the sinners.

Um, that's all i can remember for now - there are quite a few.

I don't mean to seem like i'm mocking you with these questions, it's just how my mind thinks. Your religion seems to have answers for most questions thrown at it.
Okay, I'll answer some as best as I can. But take them "with a grain of salt" (I hate that phrase) because I'm so new.

Halcyon said:
1. Do you believe you worship the same God as other Christians, or do you believe they worship a false or corrupted image of God?
We worship the same god as other christians.

Halcyon said:
2. Do you believe God created the universe or just the Earth and/or our solar system?
Personally, I believe he created the universe, but I don't know. And of course, that's thinking there could be more than one universe... Which I also don't know. I don't know enough science to answer that one.

Halcyon said:
3. If the nearest star to heaven is Kolob, is heaven a planet orbiting Kolob, or is there a gateway to heaven near Kolob or is it something else?
Don't know that one either...

Halcyon said:
4. (From a conversation with Aqualung, i might be remembering it falsely) If God was once a man, who or what created Him? Does He have his own God, and if so why do you not worship the highest God?
I guess if God were once a man, his God created him. It would then stand to reason that he worships his own God. As to why we don't worship him also - He isn't our father. He didn't create us, or this earth, or allow us to come down, or plan a way for us to come back.

Halcyon said:
5. If God is a physical being, how can He be all places at once i.e. omnipresent? How can He hear all our prayers and respond if necessary?
I don't think he can be. The Holy Ghost (which is also god, though not The Father) can be everywhere at once. He can hear our prayers because he doesn't have to be standing right next to me to hear me. He can hear me from where he is.

Halcyon said:
6. Leading on from 5., if God does have physical form why did he appear to Moses as a burning bush.
He didn't. He spoke to Moses from a burning bush. He didn't appear as a burning bush. It's like, when I use a telephone, I'm not that telephone. I'm just speaking through it. The bush was like God's telephone.

Halcyon said:
7. Has God ever walked the Earth? Was He literally sitting in the tent that Moses used to visit to speak with Him?
Jonny answered part one. Part 2, I don't know if he was literally sitting there or not, but I see no reason why he wasn't.

Halcyon said:
8. Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is within us (Lk 17.21). What is the LDS interpretation of this teaching?
This verse has a reference to D&C 65 v 2 which states
The keys to the kingom of God are committed unto man on the earth, and from thence shall the gospel roll forth unto the ends of the earth, as the stone which is cut out of the mountain without hands shall roll forth, until it has filled the whole earth.
The keys to the kingdom of god are the keys to the priesthood. Also, it points out that an alternate, perfectly valid translation of that verse is that "the kingdom of god had already come unto you" or "is among you." We are the kingdom of god because we have the priesthood authority.

Halcyon said:
9. Do you believe the events described in Revelation have already happened, or have yet to pass?
Some have happened. Others are happening right now. Some still have to happen.

Halcyon said:
10. Do we know the name of God's wife?
Not to my knowledge

Halcyon said:
11. Do you believe Jesus was married?
I see know reason to believe that he wasn't.

Halcyon said:
12. Who or what are the Angels in your faith?
I'll take this from the Bible Dictionary which is at the back of all LDS printed Bibles.
These are messengers of the Lord, and are spoken of in the epistle to the Hebrews as "ministering spirtis" (heb 1:14). We learn from latter-day revelation that there are two classes of heavenly beings who minister for the Lord: those who are spirits and those who have bodies of flesh and bone. Spirits are those beings who either have not yet obtained a body of flesh and bone (unembodied), or who have once had a mortal body and have died, and are awaiting the resurection (disembodied). Ordinarily the word angel means those ministering persons who have a body of flesh and bone, being either resurrected from the dead (reëmbodied), or else translated as were Enoch, Elijah, etc. (D&C 129).
Halcyon said:
13. Where is Hell or the residence of Satan?
I don't know. I think Satan doesn't really reside anywhere, but wanders around here wreaking havoc and stuff...

Halcyon said:
14. If God is physical, was he born of a physical mother, will he ever die?
I assume so. No, he won't ever die. His body is immortal and perfect.

[qutoe=Halcyon]15. (This one is an odd one and stems from my biological background) If God has a perfect but physical body and does not eat, as eating is only necessary for a body that is inefficiant. Does he have a digestive system, and if so, why?
I don't know. If he does, it probably gets little use. :D

Halcyon said:
16. Did God's wife become pregant with Jesus and give birth to him in the same way as Mary did? If so, was Jesus born as an infant in heaven and grow into an adult in heaven?
I don't know how our spirits were formed. (Of course, this refers to everybody, not just Jesus. We are all spirit brothers and sisters, all sons and daughters of the same God.) I don't think he was born as a "spirit baby" and grew to be a "spirit adult" later, but that's just speculation. I think we grew "mentally," but not physically, the way we are doing here.

Halcyon said:
17. What do you believe the second coming of Jesus will be like? Will he be born again as a man, or come in his original form?
I guess jonny answered this one good enough.

Did we have names in the preëxistence? If so, when we're resurected, which names will we use? Or will we not even need names? Or will we use both, and nobody will care how many names we have?

Short answer -- I don't know. I do know that God has many, many names and titles, so I don't think it will be that big of a deal.

Halcyon,

This is going to have to be a really short answer for now, because I'm on my lunch hour.

Halcyon said:
Sorry, but as much as i find Mormonism fascinating, i find it just as confusing

I've got loads of little questions, i've been thinking of them all day at work, so hopefully i'll remember most of them. Ok, here goes....

1. Do you believe you worship the same God as other Christians, or do you believe they worship a false or corrupted image of God?
How can I answer a question such as this without offending someone? We believe all Christians worship the same God. We just understand His attributes (particularly His physical attributes) differently than most Christians. In other words, we believe that the doctrine of the Trinity (as defined by the 4th and 5th century Creeds) is not an accurate description of God.

2. Do you believe God created the universe or just the Earth and/or our solar system?
We believe He created the universe and other universes... "worlds without number" is how our scriptures put it.

3. If the nearest star to heaven is Kolob, is heaven a planet orbiting Kolob, or is there a gateway to heaven near Kolob or is it something else?
We have no idea. This has never been revealed to our prophets, presumably because it is not important that we have this information.

4. (From a conversation with Aqualung, i might be remembering it falsely) If God was once a man, who or what created Him? Does He have his own God, and if so why do you not worship the highest God?
This "doctrine" has never officially been canonized. It stems from a logical extention of our official belief that we as human beings have the potential to become like God someday. This is not to say that He will at some point cease to be our God, because that's not the case. We will always worship Him and it is only through His grace that we have the potential that we do. We really don't know much about God's beginnings, aside from a couple of uncanonized statements by some of our leaders over a century ago, but if you want more information on this particular subject, I would suggest you start an entire thread on it alone.

5. If God is a physical being, how can He be all places at once i.e. omnipresent? How can He hear all our prayers and respond if necessary?
He isn't physically omnipresent. He is physically "in Heaven" which is precisely where the Bible says He is. The Holy Ghost (the third member of the Godhead) is physically omnipresent. He is the way by which we can communicate with God the Father. He can be all places at once. This is why He is known as the Holy Ghost. Our doctrine in this regard is far more "Biblical" than mainstream Christianity's is.

More later. I wish I could stick around and answer the rest of your questions. Unfortunately, I have to work.

And yet another round of answers from another LDS poster. :)

1. Do you believe you worship the same God as other Christians, or do you believe they worship a false or corrupted image of God?
Yes, we worship the same God. In fact, I might extend that to say even non-Christians and Christians in many ways worship the same God, they just call Him by different names.

2. Do you believe God created the universe or just the Earth and/or our solar system?
God created the universe, which includes Earth and our solar system, and everything else we may perceive.

3. If the nearest star to heaven is Kolob, is heaven a planet orbiting Kolob, or is there a gateway to heaven near Kolob or is it something else?
Heaven is a place where God is. There is nothing that states heaven is a planet, star, etc...

4. (From a conversation with Aqualung, i might be remembering it falsely) If God was once a man, who or what created Him? Does He have his own God, and if so why do you not worship the highest God?
We worship God, the Father, our creator. From our perspective he is the ONLY God and the one we will worship for eternity.

5. If God is a physical being, how can He be all places at once i.e. omnipresent? How can He hear all our prayers and respond if necessary?
His influence and Spirit can be in all places at once. I don't see how a PERFECT physical body would not allow for God hearing all our prayers and responding if necessary. His physical body, I believe, is beyond our understanding.

6. Leading on from 5., if God does have physical form why did he appear to Moses as a burning bush.
We believe Jehovah, the God of the Old Testament, to be Jesus Christ, who at the time was a spirit. Further, it is entirely possible the "burning bush" is figurative language and that Moses was face to face with Jehovah.

7. Has God ever walked the Earth? Was He literally sitting in the tent that Moses used to visit to speak with Him?
See my answer to question 6.

8. Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is within us (Lk 17.21). What is the LDS interpretation of this teaching?
We teach this as well. Sometimes reference is made to Zion. While this may be a physical place, it is more accurately described as the spiritual state of the individual. Whereever true believers of Christ are, there too is Zion or the Kingdom of God.

9. Do you believe the events described in Revelation have already happened, or have yet to pass?
Some have happened, some are happening right now, and some will happen in the future.

10. Do we know the name of God's wife?
Nope.

11. Do you believe Jesus was married?
Probably. While I'm unclear of what is actually taught, I accept the possibility that he may have been married to a mortal, to the Church, to the Earth, etc. I believe he was married, but how that marriage is formed, I'm not sure.

12. Who or what are the Angels in your faith?
Heavenly messangers, often resurrected beings, doing God's work.

13. Where is Hell or the residence of Satan?
Satan was cast into Outer Darkness (Hell) and will reside there forever.

14. If God is physical, was he born of a physical mother, will he ever die?
God has a PERFECT ETERNAL body. He will never die. If he was once a man as has been brought up in a previous questions, then I would say, yes, he had a physical mother, died, and was resurrected with his perfect body. This is similar to what we will experience as well.

15. (This one is an odd one and stems from my biological background) If God has a perfect but physical body and does not eat, as eating is only necessary for a body that is inefficiant. Does he have a digestive system, and if so, why?
The resurrected Jesus ate with the Apostles so while it is not necessary, it is possible to eat. Does that include a digestive system? Perhaps. I guess we'll find out ourselves some day.

16. Did God's wife become pregant with Jesus and give birth to him in the same way as Mary did? If so, was Jesus born as an infant in heaven and grow into an adult in heaven?
Jesus' spiritual body was created by God as was everyone else's. We do not know how this is done. Jesus' physical body was half from Mary as she was his mother.

17. What do you believe the second coming of Jesus will be like? Will he be born again as a man, or come in his original form?
He will come in all his glory, save the Jews from destruction, and lead a one-world government during the Millenium.

I don't mean to seem like i'm mocking you with these questions, it's just how my mind thinks. Your religion seems to have answers for most questions thrown at it.
You weren't mocking at all. You asked intelligent questions. I hope I gave good answers.

Halcyon,

I've been thinking about this comment. I think Mormonism is only confusing when you try to force it into the contraints imposed upon it by traditional Christianity. When learning about Mormonism, it's best to go into the project with as few preconceptions as possible.

About your questions... I'll continue where I left off:

6. Leading on from 5., if God does have physical form why did he appear to Moses as a burning bush.
He didn't. Read the scripture again. Moses heard His voice coming from a burning bush. The scripture never says that He was actually a bush. The Holy Ghost, unlike the Father, can manifest Himself in a variety of ways. When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Ghost descended in the form of a dove. Is He really a dove? Nope. He's not a burning bush either. If a human ventriloquist can project his voice to some inanimate object, it would be logical to assume that God can, too. ;)

7. Has God ever walked the Earth? Was He literally sitting in the tent that Moses used to visit to speak with Him?
When the Bible says that Moses spoke to God face to face, as a man speaks to a friend, that's exactly what we believe happened. So the answer is an unqualified "yes."

8. Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is within us (Lk 17.21). What is the LDS interpretation of this teaching?
There is actually a "Kingdom of God." It's where God lives. It's another way of describing the highest glory of Heaven. Joseph Smith's translation of Luke 17:21 is, "Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God has already come unto you."

9. Do you believe the events described in Revelation have already happened, or have yet to pass?
Some have already happened. Others have not. We believe that we are living today in the last days, but we don't claim to know when Christ will actually return. Parts of Revelation aren't even prophesy; they are a symbolic explanation of things that had already taken place when John received the revelation. But Revelation is something that can't very well be addressed in the space of a brief post.

10. Do we know the name of God's wife?
No, we don't. Personally, I think Kathryn would be a good name for her. ;)

11. Do you believe Jesus was married?
We believe there is a good possibility that He was, since God emphasized the importance of the marriage relationship and since we believe Jesus' life was an example of how we should live. However, and this is important, we have no official doctrine as to Jesus' marital status.

12. Who or what are the Angels in your faith?
Angels are beings that are in some state other than mortality. In other words, they can be men and women who have not yet been born (as was the case with the angels mentioned in Revelation who fought in the war in Heaven against Lucifer) or they can be men and women who are resurrected beings. They don't have wings or gold halos or sit around playing harps. They have a human form. Generally, their purpose is to act as heavenly messengers.

13. Where is Hell or the residence of Satan?
We don't know. But Satan appears to be alive and well here on earth right now.

14. If God is physical, was he born of a physical mother, will he ever die?
God is immortal, which means He is not subject to death or disease or deformity. We have no doctrine concerning His parentage.

15. (This one is an odd one and stems from my biological background) If God has a perfect but physical body and does not eat, as eating is only necessary for a body that is inefficiant. Does he have a digestive system, and if so, why?
I really have no idea, and I don't believe the details of his physical existence have ever been addressed by our leaders other than to say that He has a glorified, immortal body of flesh and bones.

16. Did God's wife become pregant with Jesus and give birth to him in the same way as Mary did? If so, was Jesus born as an infant in heaven and grow into an adult in heaven?
We don't even know the details of how Mary conceived Jesus, except that she remained a virgin after the conception. We have no information at all on how spirits come into existance except that they were created by God. We just know from the Bible that we are God's "offspring" and that He is the "father of [our] spirits." The birth process is, I believe, common to mortality only.

17. What do you believe the second coming of Jesus will be like? Will he be born again as a man, or come in his original form?
He will return in glory, as a resurrected being. He will look pretty much as He looked when He ascended into Heaven after His resurrection.

Um, that's all i can remember for now - there are quite a few.
Well, that was enough!

I don't mean to seem like i'm mocking you with these questions, it's just how my mind thinks. Your religion seems to have answers for most questions thrown at it.
I didn't take your questions as mocking in the slightest. We do have answers to questions about our beliefs except in cases where God hasn't yet revealed them to us. When understood in its entirety, Mormonism is 100% logical. There are no contradictions or huge gaps as there are in traditional Christianity. It's just that when people don't understand the entire picture, they find the differences between Mormonism and traditional Christianity confusing.

Seems like we've got a lot of speculation, but very little doctrine. Distinguishing between the two is important to me, so for now I'll stick to ones that can be answered with doctrine. I might join the speculation later.

5. If God is a physical being, how can He be all places at once i.e. omnipresent? How can He hear all our prayers and respond if necessary?
Previous answers covered this in part, but IMO there was one crucial point missing:
"The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead (see 1 John 5:7; D&C 20:28). He is a spirit that has the form and likeness of a man (see D&C 130:22). He can be in only one place at a time, but his influence can be everywhere at the same time.--Gospel Principles: The Holy Ghost (emphasis mine)"
In this way, the holy ghost can be compared to the sun, which can warm many places at once without being physically present.

7. Has God ever walked the Earth? Was He literally sitting in the tent that Moses used to visit to speak with Him?
Katzpur's answer on this was doctrinal: the scripture says "face to face" and we take that literally.

12. Who or what are the Angels in your faith?
See Aqualung (good job, AL! Hard to go wrong when you quote from the book!)

17. What do you believe the second coming of Jesus will be like? Will he be born again as a man, or come in his original form?
“Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go” (Acts 1:11).
That about sums it up. Jesus has been resurrected, and therefore has no need to be reborn as an infant. Rather, he will bear the marks in his hands and his feet from his crucifiction. Revelations about the Second Coming state that people will feel the wounds in his hands.
And for #18, Jonny handled that quite well. Read the book, I tell ya!:jam:
