Okay, so i just did a post on facebook asking people to answer a very difficult question, and i had to edit it, cause i knew as it stood, most people would just be offended. So, i have a quick question to ask you guys. Which is worse, rape or murder?

Situational - like virtually anything else.

Yeah, but that's an easy dodge, and didn't answer the question. It's really an opinion question, isn't it? And i'm asking, which is worse, to kill someone, or rape them? You can probably come up with why a certain type of murder is worse than a certain type of rape, or why a certain kind of rape is worse than a certain type of murder, or why a murder of a certain person is worse than the rape of a certain person. My question is simple, overall, when you aren't building up some kind of worst case scenario in your head, which is worse, murder or rape?

From a religious point of view, such as Islam, they are both equal. It's like asking which is worse, to cut off the index finger or the thumb?

No, it was a thoughtless question. To the extent that terms like 'better' and 'worse' have any value in this discussion, I find the Armenian Genocide worse than the date rape of a young woman and the date rape of that young woman worse than the revenge murder of the rapist.

Murder is worse.
The victim cannot recover & move on.

I wanted to say that. But such words coming from a religious person where sure to be misinterpreted into "That's what religions teach" etc. Especially me being a Muslim.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
As a woman who has been violently raped in the past, I would still say generally speaking, murder is worse - because there's no recovering from that.

You should be able to say what you feel whether religious or not :)

I agree though, murder is worse due to not being able to recover and move on.

Murder. Murder ends the life, whereas a rape victim still has the chance to experience joy in the future.

This is very true.

As I stated earlier, I was violently raped as a college student. It wasn't even date rape. Though I casually knew the rapist, it happened in the middle of the day, no date, no drugs, no alcohol, totally unexpected and violent and bizarre. It really messed with my head for a long time.

Eventually, I went to counseling about it. I also worked hard on the issue myself from a spiritual perspective. See, I believe firmly that all things work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. I knew that in spite of this horrible thing that had happened to me, I had to move beyond it and learn from it and incorporate it into the fabric of my life, if you will. So I did.

I can honestly say that this event eventually made me a better person and ironically, in the long run, had a positive effect on my life. I know that sounds very odd, but it's the truth.

Do I wish it hadn't happened? Well, here's my belief. I believe there is no "what might have been." There is only "what is." So I don't waste my time fantasizing about "what might have been" or what I think "should have been." Real life is interesting and challenging enough and it's all I have anyway.

Life is a wondrous journey.

Murder stops that journey and is irrevokable, so I say murder is worse.

I can posit scenarios where the specifics of the rape would seem worse than the specifics of the murder (at least from the outside - not being a direct participant). I can do the same in reverse.

Are we including or excluding situations which fit legal definitions (consensual statutory rape for example)?

I think they are both worse. If the choice is between rape and killing but not murder say homicide, then rape is worse that homicide

Posit all you want, fella.
Victims recover from rape.
No one has ever been cured of murder....well, unless one takes the Bible literally, but that happened only once.

From the simplistic perspective, agreed.

What if we talk about assisted suicide, for instance? Or, as above, consensual statutory rape?

Easy one.
Tis not murder.

Or, as above, consensual statutory rape?
Trickier, since it depends upon whether the younger party had the mental capacity to voluntarily engage in boinking.
It might or might not be "rape" in an ethical sense.
Still, it beats being murdered.

I tend to agree with Revoltingest's view.In terms of the moral quality of the action, I think murder is worse than rape. (inserts disclaimer relating to context). That is because by killing someone you deny them everything that constitutes life. You take away everything that is, or would have been for them. Rape, you deny them certain freedoms and can cause them significant trauma, but the magnitude of loss and perminancy is not the same.

Lol, it seems as if people are really sure i'm trying to make religious people look bad. This is actually more of a psychological question, kind of a confirmation of what i already knew. You guys want to know the real purpose of this question? My next question will show you where i'm coming from. So, now that it seems that the few people who are willing to answer my question as intended have said murder is worse, i agree btw, here's my next question. Would you rather kill someone, or rape someone? Yeah, i don't expect anyone to answer this. Just perhaps you get where i'm going with this, and you can ponder upon the strangeness of the human psyche.
