Well as per Vedic Dharma (Hinduism), it (Ishwara) is said to be Saguna (with Attributes) and Nirguna (Without Attributes).
Although in Hinduism we never claim to know all of the attributes of the supreme, freedom of artistic expression and freedom of worship are key to Hinduism.

The Saguna attributes are i think,

- IT exists
- IT is animate
- IT is source of all bliss and happiness
- IT is unchangeable
- IT is all-powerful
- IT is just
- IT is kind
- IT is unborn
- IT never dies
- IT is infinite
- IT is omnipresent
- IT has no defects
- IT has no beginning and no end either in time or space
- IT is uncomparable
- IT maintains entire universe
- IT creates entire universe
- IT knows everything
- IT never deteriorates and remains perfect always
- IT is fearless
- IT is pure
- IT has no agents and establishes direct relationship with all souls.

If you create a picture or idol of God, none of those attributes hold true anymore.
WHY? What has changed about your god? If you visualise your god, does the visualisation magically become your god? Surely such behaviour would have absolutely no effect on your god.

God(s) is an interesting concept but I've yet to see any good evidence that god(s) is anything more.

So which is the Creator?

God. Creation is specifically connected with Christ who is the Logos. The Godhead or Urgrund would be simmilar to the Nirguna Brahman someone mentioned above. It's preexistential and beyond being as we know it.

That doesn't make sense. If the Creator is God and God is 'Father, Son , and Holy Spirit' - so the Creator needed a creation (Mary) to exist(or be Created again - as in Jesus)?

the one attribute about god that i can see is...

indifference.

Quite the opposite

God is not indifferent to His creation, as one of His attributes is The Ever-Living

To give an idea of how much He cares for us, you may wish to read this Hadith Qudsi:

“If my servant comes closer to Me a hand span, I come closer to him or her an arms-length; and if he or she comes to Me walking, I come to him or her at speed.”

moot.

now look at syria...

edit:
consider tsunamis, hurricanes, drought
and earthquakes for starters...or maybe elizabeth friztl...as god just stands there and watches.

indifference is what can be determined through observation from my eyes.

You can't say what God is, you can only say what God is not.

God is not knowable, therefore you cannot speak of God's attributes.

Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muss man schweigen.

God from my experience is light and peace and love.
God is the ground of being.
God is the ultimate self, the essence of existing.

This I believe is the one true transcendent experience.

However there are many lessor beings which emanate from the self such as the creator of this universe. Some worship these lessor beings as God. These lessor Gods are not whole nor perfect.

Man has the ability to create and we do create Gods for ourselves. Man can worship the physical/material as the ultimate truth. Man can worship the physical self. Man can worship a particular idea or concept as truth.

We create our truths and they in turn create us.

If a being chooses to look inward, to seek the essence of their own existence, I believe they will find peace, truth, light and love. This so far seems absolute.

This is the answer:

The problem of suffering has been haunting human consciousness from the moment man gained the power of thinking: The question is: If God is good and means well for humankind, why should He allow them to suffer?

The answer, one may say, can be found in the universal operation of cause and effect. Basically, human actions are motivated by the hope for desired results. It is the hope for the realization of these results that pushes us forward to do good work.

Islam teaches that evil, which causes suffering, is like one of the twins, the other being good. This is because good in our life on earth is ironically linked to evil. In fact, good in this world cannot exist without bad, as they are two sides of the same coin, and both are relative concepts.
The foregoing means that the inadequacies and deficiencies of this world offer us enough opportunities to engage in creative efforts for improvement; and thus they effectively make our life and work meaningful.

Thus, a little reflection would make us see that both good and evil are equally necessary for the spiritual development of humanity. The spirit grows when it confronts evil and overcomes it to do good.

You can read in the noble Quran, which Muslims believe is the word of God, what means:

[
Nor can goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate! And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint — none but persons of the greatest good fortune.] (Fussilat 41:34-35)

The foregoing means that in order to counter evil, immense patience is necessary. Similarly, suffering, which is a natural concomitant of evil, tests the worth and mettle of a person. And the spirits of genuine believers do not weaken under suffering; nor does suffering frighten them or make them desperate.

The superiority of Islam over other philosophies or ideologies can be seen in that it equips its adherents with the spiritual strength to confront evil and overcome suffering. A genuine Muslim accepts physical pain, disease, personal loss of life or property, as an unavoidable test of this life and strives to overcome them with a sense of balance and equanimity.

God says in the noble Quran what means:

[And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient ones.] (Al-Baqarah 2:155)

In order to face the trials and tribulations of this world with calmness, we need to realize that everything happens by the permission of God. And God says in the Quran what means:

[And with Him are the keys of the unseen; no one knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darkness of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that is [written] in a clear record.] (Al-An`am 6:59)

Indeed, God has power over all things; and the reason why He allows diseases and calamities in a particular situation is beyond our comprehension and for reasons that may not be apparent. Yet, out of His infinite wisdom and mercy, He wants only what is best for us:

[Their Lord gives them glad tidings of a Mercy from Him, and that He is pleased (with them), and of Gardens (Paradise) for them wherein are everlasting delight.] (At-Tawbah 9:21)

Believers must try to view both good fortune and bad fortune with an equal temper of mind. The ultimate good they are going to get is certainly in the hereafter.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good. If something good happens to him, he is thankful for it and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is also good for him." (Muslim)

Islam teaches that the life of this world is indeed a trial, and what is most beneficial to us ultimately is the good we do.

Prophet Muhammad also said:

"No misfortune or disease befalls a Muslim, no worry or grief or harm or distress — not even a thorn that pricks him — but God will expiate for some of his sins because of that." (Al-Bukhari)

We humans are weak beings; and our first inclination is to weep and wail about our situation, but God, Who is Most Merciful, promises us that after every hardship comes ease.

[So verily, with the hardship, there is relief.] (Ash-Sharh 94:5)

When struck by illness or injury, believers put their trust in God, and are satisfied with whatever God has decreed for them. And at the same time, they pray to their God for the amelioration of the condition, while resorting to the means of remedy available to them.

It is not uncommon for people suffering from debilitating diseases or terrible disabilities, to thank God for their condition, or speak of the way pain and suffering brought blessings and goodness into their lives. When we are feeling utterly helpless and distressed, God is our only refuge. When pain and suffering become unbearable, only God can send us the means of relief.

Complete trust in God and total submission to His will enable a person to peacefully accept all the conditions this world brings — the good and the hard, as well as the exciting and utterly distressing.

Islam teaches that the suffering of this world is a means of our purification; and indeed, God is there to reward us abundantly in the hereafter for our losses and pains.

Believers never lose hope. They trust in the eternal benevolence and mercy of Allah, as He says in the Quran:

[On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear.] (Al-Baqarah 2:286)

And,

{My mercy extends to all things.} (Al-A`raf 7:156)

Allah's mercy is all-pervading, and He fulfills the smallest need of the lowest creature in the most unexpected ways.

Drawing something creates a symbol. The statement that God can never be created or destroyed is not affected by an artist's depiction of Him.
According to my religion, God is both formless and possessing form. The scriptures provide some descriptions as to the qualities and characteristics of this form.

According to my religion and ability to use logical thinking, one whose intention is to think of God will therefore be thinking of God. Having an inaccurate image in ones mind does not change the fact that you are thinking of God. Just like if you tell me what you look like but I have never actually seen you, it is still you that I am thinking of despite having an inaccurate image in my mind.

Is your God infinite?

The very fact that you worship God reduces God to a physical object. There is no harm in beginning this way. But if we are to progress and discover the truth that God is not limited, we have to discover there is no subject-object separation – that we are not separate from God. Till we achieve this, we are idol worshippers. When we discover we are not separate from God, worship becomes redundant – a possibility not envisaged in Islam but is the very goal of Hinduism.

Worship is required only if God is separate from the worshipper. When the worshipper realises God is not separate from him, then worship becomes superfluous.

Which ever way you take it. What the other person was trying to explain to you is that Islam forbids you to worship anything or anyone other than the One True God worthy of worship. So you can go ahead and redefine idol-worship all you want.

The very fact that you worship God reduces God to a physical object.
How so?

But then you do believe that one of the attributes of God is more close to the humans like 'having a child - son or daughter', right ? That kind of restricts the greatness of God, don't you think ? To me, He is nothing like His creation.

i've never understood this line of reasoning.

God does not reproduce offspring in the way we do, but that does not mean he cannot have children. If he creates an intelligent being, lets say an angel, that angel is said to be his Son in the scriptures. All angels are called 'sons of God' just as all mankind are called Gods children.

So when we say that Jesus is Gods Son, it doesnt mean that God reproduced Jesus in the way a man and woman would reproduce a child. It simply means that Jehovah God created Jesus and the close bond they have is similar to that of a father and his son. Its just a 'figure of speech'...it doesnt mean he has a humanlike reproductive system. He is not a 'reproducer' he is a 'creator'....he creates life and he is the father of all living things.

And why would God all of a sudden need to come up with a Son where as He had been sending Messengers/Prophets from the beginning of mankind ?

because those messengers were usually imperfect humans who eventually died due be being born sinners. The messengers of the past could not save mankind...they could only reveal Gods intentions to save mankind. Even Mohammad spoke of Gods intention to save mankind, yes?

Divine justice required a perfect human life to save mankind...and no prophet or messenger was perfect. So God sent one of his holy angels, his most beloved angel, to earth to be born through a woman and thus be 'fully' human.

The one he sent into the world was Jesus. Born perfect, Jesus life was the equivalent of the life that Adam lost....perfect. So only he could rightly offer to God the price of redemption on behalf of all mankind.
