Why do you practice your religion or lack there of?

I find it comforting. It is like a cushion of delusion that just makes everything else much better. Better than the rest of the life that I have deluded myself with at any rate.

I am a Deist because it is the only thing that makes sense to me.

I am a Christian because I chose to be.

I should have said that “everything is objective”. I do not see subjective realities as an oxymoron. It’s there for reason. Not because I want to attach a reason but because it must serve some positive purpose from an evolutionary standpoint. I can imagine things without anything objective causing it to do so. I find it weird that mother nature would bring about a human ability such as imagining without something objective as it’s source. That fascinates me and I won’t count out god as a source.

Why do I practice my non-religion?

Because I have been a seeker of truth my entire life. I grew up in a very conservative Christian family (which has condemned me for my freethinking ways) and I tried my entire childhood to make Christianity fit into a "box" (for lack of a better term) of intellectual honesty, and the more I tried to do so, the less it wanted to fit.

I tried and tried, and to this day still continue to try to come into a relationship with God. I have done this by study, and have found that the more research and serious thinking I do on the subject of religion, the more firmly I am convinced that not only is Christianity not "the way" that there is no religion, or group of religions that are "the way".

Frankly, in my experience, the people I know who are very interested in religion become less and less religious the more they study it. At this point, I honestly have a hard time imagining how a person of intelligence who deeply studies the subject of religion can rationally come to the conclusion that any one of them has it right. I take no exception with those who recognize religion as a delusion that they choose to enjoy. Hey, it is not called the opiate of the people for nothing, and who am I to say that your opiate is not the proper cure for what ails you?

I mainly came to be a skeptic, AA, freethinker, (feel free to label me as you wish) because a study of history shows me that throughout human history there have been several rises and subsequent falls of great civilizations and religions. At one time in history the known world prayed to Zeus, Apollo, Thor, Ra, etc. . . and the list goes on. None of those "immortal" gods live any more, which leads me to conclude that they never did.

There was a time in Earth's history when there was not a Jew, Christian or Muslim on the planet. Why is that? Is it because G-d, God, Allah had not chosen to reveal himself, and allowed the many god's mentioned in the above paragraph to rule the world? Or is it that nobody had chosen to dream up this new god who declared that there shall be only one. Greeks had no problem with polytheism, and they were the most sophisticated folks around in their day. Where was Allah then? Where is Apollo now?

Most logical answer is the same for both questions, don't you think?
