Violence in the Bible

Deut 13:1

That's good to know.... can you give me the Bible verse so I can read the procedure for killing your brother in the proper fashion?
Sure, here is some.

Deuteronomy 16
18. You shall set up judges and law enforcement officials for yourself in all your cities that the Lord, your God, is giving you, for your tribes, and they shall judge the people [with] righteous judgment. 19. You shall not pervert justice; you shall not show favoritism, and you shall not take a bribe, for bribery blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts just words. 20. Justice, justice shall you pursue, that you may live and possess the land the Lord, your God, is giving you.

Deuteronomy 17
5. Then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has committed this evil thing, to your cities, the man or the woman, and you shall pelt them with stones, and they shall die.
6. By the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall the one liable to death be put to death; he shall not be put to death by the mouth of one witness.

Deuteronomy 17
8. If a matter eludes you in judgment, between blood and blood, between judgment and judgment, or between lesion and lesion, words of dispute in your cities, then you shall rise and go up to the place the Lord, your God, chooses.
9. And you shall come to the Levitic kohanim and to the judge who will be in those days, and you shall inquire, and they will tell you the words of judgment.

Deuteronomy 19
15. One witness shall not rise up against any person for any iniquity or for any sin, regarding any sin that he will sin. By the mouth of two witnesses, or by the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be confirmed.

Deuteronomy 17
16. If a false witness rises up against a man, to bear perverted testimony against him,
17. Then the two men between whom the controversy exists shall stand before the Lord, before the kohanim and the judges who will be in those days.
18. And the judges shall inquire thoroughly, and behold, the witness is a false witness; he has testified falsely against his brother;
19. then you shall do to him as he plotted to do to his brother, and you shall [thus] abolish evil from among you.
20. And those who remain shall listen and fear, and they shall no longer continue to commit any such evil thing among you.
21. You shall not have pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

This is just some, and this is just deuteronomy, I believe there are more in Exodus.

68 By love, God has revealed himself and given himself to man. He has thus provided the definitive, superabundant answer to the questions that man asks himself about the meaning and purpose of his life.

69 God has revealed himself to man by gradually communicating his own mystery in deeds and in words.

70 Beyond the witness to himself that God gives in created things, he manifested himself to our first parents, spoke to them and, after the fall, promised them salvation (cf. Gen 3:15) and offered them his covenant.

71 God made an everlasting covenant with Noah and with all living beings (cf. Gen 9:16). It will remain in force as long as the world lasts.

72 God chose Abraham and made a covenant with him and his descendants. By the covenant God formed his people and revealed his law to them through Moses. Through the prophets, he prepared them to accept the salvation destined for all humanity.

73 God has revealed himself fully by sending his own Son, in whom he has established his covenant for ever. The Son is his Father's definitive Word; so there will be no further Revelation after him.

In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word - and he has no more to say. . . because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son. Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behavior but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty.
St. John of the Cross

That oughta clear things up for ya.

So your answer to my question was yes?

How about I rephrase the question...

In your OWN words, can you see yourself stoning someone to death like the bible calls for if you lived before Jesus came to be? Do you believe it was a sin or God had it wrong? And finally... Do you believe that the laws in the OT of the Bible were just? (seeing as they were God's laws)

Darn... and I thought that would clear things up....:D

Not for a second.
Do you believe it was a sin or God had it wrong?
I believe humanity "had it wrong".....even though they contain matters imperfect and provisional, the books of the Old Testament bear witness to the need for a divine redeemer.
And finally... Do you believe that the laws in the OT of the Bible were just?
Just? Heck no. It shows that the economy of the Old Testament was deliberately oriented that it should prepare for and declare in prophecy the coming of Christ, redeemer of all men.... and while I reject Marcionism, it should be no suprise to you that I find the OT "lacking", I am a Christian after all.

Outstanding link. So refreshing to see I am not the only one who has a problem with this "loving God" stuff. Thanks.

The fact that you find it refreshing is disturbing.

Victor,

you find it disturbing that I am concerned about a diety who says entire civilizations, including babies are to be murdered?

B.

well dale events like these in the bible must be put to reason of why sacrifices are needed most questions i would consider you asking would be

-was it there fate?
-what are you using them for?
-what kind of god are you?

questions like these also depend on the fate of a belief like god if man is to believe there obviously must be a cost so this is how you would see it

-man makes belief
-man calls belief god
-the belief needs a sarifice to stay alive
-man must die for his creator
-the belief is a destructive force

through this there must have been a alchemist in the biblical ages for such events to happen so the ancient art musn't be a lie but more of a sorted truth of understanding your own human nature

throught the belief in that nature "which was which is and which is to come your lord thy god" understand you must be dependent on sacrifice if peace is going to be obtained or "you must go through hell before making it to heaven"
these messages are like clues to make it to the man-made heaven.

Commandments mentioned in the Old Testaments were given to Israelites. Some are still applicable to Christians.

Lev 20:15-16 was given to Israelites and even applicable in our time because it is not holy and morale for humans to lay with the beast or animals. God made male and female to be partners....
Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

1Co
11:12 For as the woman is of the man, so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God.

About 1 Samuel 15:1-3
1Sa 15:1 And Samuel said unto Saul, Jehovah sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of Jehovah.
1Sa 15:2 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I have marked that which Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way, when he came up out of Egypt.
1Sa 15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ***.
God did not forget what the Amaleks have done to Israel when he leads them out of Egypt. Amalek provoked God by fighting with Israel. Here is what happened…
Please read Exo 17:1-13…
Exo 17:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
Exo 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
Exo 17:16 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Exodus 22:18 - Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
Witch is an instrument of the devil. In the New Testament they will be cast out to the lake of fire.
Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Exodus 21:17 - And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
Even without the commandment, our heart dictates that we must love our parents because God used them for our existence in earth.
Eph 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise
Eph 6:3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Exodus 31:14 - Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Sabbath mentioned in Exodus 31:14 is given to Israel. Christians have their own Sabbath and that is our Lord Jesus Christ.
Mar 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Mar 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
What is the purpose of Sabbath? If the children of Israel will observe Sabbath, they will be sanctified because they can not commit sin during Sabbath day.
Exo 20:11 For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore Jehovah blessed the Sabbath day, and sanctified it.
For Christian, the Sabbath is our Lord Jesus Christ. He is called the Lord of Sabbath because if you are a Christian then you must believe in his teachings. The teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ sanctified every Christian. Everyday Christians keep the Sabbath and commit no mortal sin.
1Co 1:2 to the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called out with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.
As a Christian, what offenses do you feel I should be killed for?
If a Christian commits offense unintentionally, that sin is forgiven by God. However, if you do it repeatedly then that is already intentional and will be liable in judgment day.
Jam 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Jam 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
Jam 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Jam 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

All violence mentioned in the bible has righteous answer from the bible itself.

God bless you.

The image of God as wrathful is not cogent to the later message of Christ, who came to fulfill the Law. God is a God of grace, not judgment. Frankly, your post seems rather Pharisaical.

Why would it be disturbing if in some religion that believe in the bible god allowed the molestation of the innocence with no punishment whatsoever. Check out the cover up of a church that I would not mention but was in the news heavily publicized and criticized thus policies were changed to appease the masses. Their priest remained unpunished for a least 30 years due to high ranking religious leaders looking the opposite way and not admitting that there are problems. Now that's disturbing cause it is reality.
