Can a Muslim have a personal relationship with Allah?

Marble

In this thread it was asked if a Muslim can call Allah father and the answer was no.
So I wonder: Can a Muslim have a personal relationship with Allah?
Or is awe the only proper attitude towards Allah?

What do you have in your mind when you say "personal relationship"?

It's a phrase that became popular in America during the 1800s, Sahar. It is still popular today with Christian Fundamentalists. It means the person thinks they have a relationship with their god that is somewhat like having a relationship with another person. A one-on-one relationship, unmediated by priests or ministers.

Quran & Sunnah
Allah is our God, Lord, Creator, Companion, beloved, sustainer, preserver, provider, healer, protector and what not. We do reach Him and talk to Him directly without a mediator. A believer's complete life depends on Allah; we do depend on Him on every single matter. I would say, yes, Muslims have personal relationship with God, however, that personal relationship is based on love, respect, awe and reverance. We don't sum up that relationship to a parent relationship, for Allah the Exalted is above and higher than that.

Im not sure what you mean by "emotional relationship", but in general, the main messege of Islam was to eliminate all "middle men" , whether "men" or idols. You pray directly to God.

If you mean the relation is based on fear only, this is not Islamic. Rather one should always be between fear and hope, not going to extremes either direction. To love God, and the prophet peace be upon him, are surely Islamic, and is the position of any true believer. The more one loves God, the more it shows in the persons actions/beliefs following the teachings.

However, if what is meant by "personal relationship" is freedom to accept things contrary to what the religion teaches then this isnt to be considered from God anyway, but more like whims and desires.

That said everyone should have a good relationship with God, and raise his/her level in the eyes of God, and become close to him through prayer, adherence to teachings, voluntary prayers, fasting, charity, helping people, and so on.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: "The most loved people to Allah are the most beneficial, the most loved deeds to Allah the Exalted are making a Muslim happy, revealing his sorrow, paying his debt, or revealing his hunger, and I'd prefer to help my Muslim brother who is in need of something than staying in the mosque for praying (I'tikaf) for a month, and who stopped his anger God will cover his private parts, and who absorbed his rage (and if he wants to leave it he would do it), God will fill his heart with satisfaction on the Day of Resurrection, and who walked with his Muslim brother in a need till he attained it God will attain (strengthen) his feet on the day when all the feet will fall (slip), and the bad morals decays the deed as when the vinegar decomposes the honey"[classified as Hasan by Al-Albani]

Hi Marble,

Can a Muslim have a personal relationship with Allah, they can try its only the Mu-minoon or belivers who can truly have any relationship with him Muslim means to submit so to be closer to Allah you have to become a Mu-minoon.

BTW Allah has 99 Names all of which describe emotions/relations he has to us and us to him.

Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) said :

"Allah says: "Whoever takes a Wali (loyal slave) of Mine an enemy, I will wage war on him; and My slave will not perform any act with which he draws closer to Me, more beloved to Me then when he fulfills what I have ordained on him; and My salve will keep drawing closer to Me by performing the Nawafil (voluntary acts of worship) until I love him, and when I love him, I will be his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hands with which he strikes, and his legs with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him; and if he seeks refuge with Me, I will grant him refuge." [Saheeh Al Bukharee]

very true subhana Allah..may Allah led us be amongst those who remember Him often in every situation.

when I think about the relationship with Allah..It's one that's in your heart as in you can feel in your heart when your relationship is good..you feel a tranquility and you strive to do that which is good..and you feel your imaan(faith) increase..when your having a difficult time you ask God because you know that He hears you and you know that He loves those who ask Him..and in good times you thank Him and in every situation you praise Him.
And you look forward to your meeting with your Rabb(Creator) in the Hereafter..more then you look forward being reunited with a loved one.
