'Hoor' for men in paradise , what about women?

Adam and Eve were the first human beings living in paradise. They were husband and wife. This incident is depicted in Qur’an in the following ways:

[2:35] We said, "O Adam, live with your wife in Paradise, and eat therefrom generously, as you please, but do not approach this tree, lest you sin."

[7:19] "As for you, Adam, dwell with your wife in Paradise, and eat therefrom as you please, but do not approach this one tree, lest you fall in sin."

From the above verses what we remark here that ALLAH (swt) prescribed happiness of paradise for human being associate his or her spouse. That is the reason ALLAH (swt) proclaimed for the believing husbands and wives to live in Jannah together :

[43:70] Enter Paradise, together with your spouses, and rejoice.

Not only spouses rather ALLAH (swt) promised the whole believing – righteous family to live inside the paradise together:

[13:23] They enter the gardens of Eden, together with the righteous among their parents, their spouses, and their children. The angels will enter in to them from every door.

[40:8] "Our Lord, and admit them into the gardens of Eden that You promised for them and for the righteous among their parents, spouses, and children. You are the Almighty, Most Wise.”

[52:21] For those who believed, and their children also followed them in belief, we will have their children join them. We never fail to reward them for any work. Every person is paid for what he did.

After realizing the fact that a believing man or woman will enjoy the happiness of paradise along the members of his or her righteous family now we can place the question that what is going to happen for those male or female whose families , especially in this case their spouse were not qualified to enter jannah ? Who is going to be their spouse ? Before going to that answer , let me quote the principle of ALLAH (swt) regarding the treatment towards male and female who will enter the Jannah :

[4:124] As for those who lead a righteous life, MALE OR FEMALE, WHILE BELIEVING, THEY ENTER PARADISE; WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST INJUSTICE/DEPRIVATION/INEQUALITY .

[40:40] Whoever commits a sin is requited for just that, and WHOEVER WORKS RIGHTEOUSNESS - MALE OR FEMALE - WHILE BELIEVING, THESE WILL ENTER PARADISE WHEREIN THEY RECEIVE PROVISIONS WITHOUT ANY LIMITS.

[21:102] They will not hear its hissing. They (righteous male and female ) will enjoy an abode (paradise) where THEY CAN GET EVERYTHING THEY DESIRE, forever.

Female and male will be treated cordially and equally in paradise. ALLAH, the Magnificent will fill all of their desires . If such is the case of the nature of the admiration that both female and male will get from ALLAH (swt) in Jannah , there is no doubt that if males will obtain heavenly female companions to content his desire , in the same way females will also and of course get heavenly male companions to content her desire . The above discussion supported by the noble verses of Qur’an constructs a strong basement of the issue that Muslim and Muslima – both will have their holy wife or husband respectfully in Jannah , if their spouses failed to be admitted in Jannah . On this Quranic basement InshALLAH we will furnish some decoration on the term ‘ Hoor’ from Qur’an .

For example let us see the verses 52:20 >>

“ Reclining on ranged couches. And We wed them (Wa-Zawwaj-naahum) unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes (bihoorin AAeenin).”

The term ‘hoor’ related as the reward of paradise has been used about five times in the whole Qur’an , not a single time it denotes to only feminine gender , rather it is used as the plural of both Ahwar (Masculine) and Hawra (Feminine) which literally translates into persons distinguished by Hawar, signifying "intense whiteness of the eyeballs and lustrous black of the pupils." (ref: Qamus ), hence 'the purity' (ref: Tafsir al'Tabari, and Tafsir al-Razi in 3:52) . The following comment regarding Noble Verses 52:20 and 44:54 was taken from the foot notes of the Noble Quran that was translated by Minister (Sheikh) Abdullah Yusuf Ali; may Allah Almighty rest his soul and make Paradise his ultimate destiny:

"Hur implies the following ideas: (1) purity; possibly the word Hawariyun, as applied to the first Disciples of Jesus, is connected with this root; (2) beauty, especially of eyes, where the intense white of the eyeballs stands out against the intense black of the pupil, thus giving the appearance of lustre, and intense feeling: as opposed to dullness or want of expression; and (3) truth and good will."

In the case of the word "hawariyyun", which is the word Allah Almighty called Jesus' disciples peace be upon them (see for example the noble verses from the Qur’an 3:52 , 5:111 , 5:112 , 61:14 ), it is derived from the root word "hur". So in the case of Jesus' disciples peace be upon them, Allah Almighty respected them by calling them "hawariyyun", which is plural of "huri", which is derived from the root word "hur" which means a very beautiful human-creation of Allah Almighty. And we know it very well that the disciples of Jesus (p) were male ,possibly a few female as well . So the word "hur" or "huri" in the Noble Quran and Arabic can refer to either a male or female and NOT JUST FEMALES ALONE.

And as for the word ‘Ain’ (eyes) it is the plural of both 'Ayan' (Masculine) and 'Ainao' (Feminine)" [Al-Raghib Al-Mufradat, Beirut, 1998,Kitab 'Ain,P.358], it was used to refer to the beautiful eyes of the wild-cow whose eyes are blond. In general, this word implies 'most beautiful eye' irrespective of the person's gender. Thus, the most appropriate English rendering of the compound word Hur'Ain will be: "Companions pure, most beautiful of eye." and it is applicable to both male and female.

So when Allah Almighty promised companions to the believers in Paradise, He quite clearly and obviously promised female companions (female hoor) for the males and male companions (male hoor) for the females, through the bond of marriage (‘zawaaj’ in the verse 44:54 , 52:20, for example ) .

ALLAH is the most Wise, most Omniscient.

Yes, the word is neuter in that verse. Kinda shows those (mostly misogynist) ahadith wrong.

At any rate, I don't believe in the afterlife we will be literally married to real huriyah. They're symbolism in Sufism.

There you go ...:clap

You might be right because the physics of Jannah is completely different than the earthly one .

But I have read some translations in the Quran that says that they will have large bosoms and that their cherries will be unpopped. Well some translators translate the sentence of large bosom as that they are splendid companions but what about the verse that they are virgins who has unpenetrated hymen?

Hi Draupadi . None of those extra-sexy description appears in the Qur'an ( I am getting hot - I am a young man anyway :dancer: ) .

Whatsoever , Those are distortion of GOD's (swt) words just to suit these pornographic description in Hadith .

You are probably referring to verse 55.56/55.74 ( referring to various fruits and not women -untouched ) , 78.33 ( referring to Orchards and grapes and not women - grouped/bunched equality in taste ) , 56.36 (also grapes and fruits, not women- perfect in shape ).

Feehinna qasiratu alttarfi lam yatmithhunna insun qablahum wala jannun 55:56

(Y. Ali)
In them will be (Maidens), chaste, restraining their glances, whom no man or Jinn before them has touched;-

Can you please show me the meaning of yatmithhunna from and Arabic to English dictionary? I am having a hard time finding it.

You can find it here under root ط م ث .

In this scope I may need to comment also about the translation of the verse you mentioned ( Y.Ali's I want to mean of course ).

He rightly translated yatmithhunna as 'has touched' which also found in the above link . But the other few words are needed to rectify . The verse has no remote relation with chaste maiden , restrained glance etc.

'qasiratu' means short /cut down / brief (ref. Qasar Salah ( shortening Salah) in 4.101 , cutting/shortening hair in Hajj in 48.27).

'alttarfi' means the end part/the border (ref.3.127,11.114,21.44 etc.) .

Now the pieces of puzzle are falling into right places . Enjoy the below earthy pic with imagining heavenly version of it in mind and just after that read the verses from 55:52-56 . Hopefully it will make a perfect sense to you .

[055:052] In them will be Fruits of every kind, two and two.
[055:053] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
[055:054] They will recline on Carpets, whose inner linings will be of rich brocade: the Fruit of the Gardens will be near (and easy of reach).
[055:055] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
[055:056] In them will be short ending which no man or Jinn before them has touched;-

The whole group of verses are about garden , spring , fruits and trees . Everything was going alright with the most of translators but except 55.56 as you know .

[055:046] But for such as fear the time when they will stand before (the Judgment Seat of) their Lord, there will be two Gardens-
[055:047] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
[055:048] Containing all kinds (of trees and delights);-
[055:049] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
[055:050] In them (each) will be two Springs flowing (free);
[055:051] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
[055:052] In them will be Fruits of every kind, two and two.
[055:056] In them will be (Maidens), chaste, restraining their glances,<<<In them will be close/short ends (of the tree branch so that the inhabitants can fetch the fruits easily as prescribed in the previous verse , i.e., 55.54) >>> whom no man or Jinn before them has touched;-
[055:057] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
[055:058] Like unto Rubies and coral.
[055:059] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
[055:060] Is there any Reward for Good - other than Good?
[055:061] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
[055:062] And besides these two, there are two other Gardens,-
[055:063] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?-
[055:064] Dark-green in colour (from plentiful watering).
[055:065] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
[055:066] In them (each) will be two Springs pouring forth water in continuous abundance:
[055:067] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?
[055:068] In them will be Fruits, and dates and pomegranates:
[055:069] Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

In 55.56 قاصرات is from the root qāf ṣād rā (ق ص ر) meaning become short, have little or no power, become niggardly, fall short, i.e. not to reach something, left/relinquish/abstain/desist/cease, took from its length, clip/shove, restricted/confined/limited, kept within certain bounds or limits, restrain/withheld, hinder/prevent, contract or draw oneself together etc..

You can find this word used in the book of ALLAH (swt) , to denote the above meanings in the following verses :

[004:101] When ye travel through the earth, there is no blame on you if ye shorten your prayers, for fear the Unbelievers May attack you: For the Unbelievers are unto you open enemies.

‏4:101 واذا ضربتم في الارض فليس عليكم جناح ان تقصروا من الصلاة ان خفتم ان يفتنكم الذين كفروا ان الكافرين كانوا لكم عدوا مبينا

[007:202] But their brethren (the evil ones) plunge them deeper into error, and never relax (their efforts).

‏7:202 واخوانهم يمدونهم في الغي ثم لايقصرون

[048:027] Truly did God fulfil the vision for His Apostle: ye shall enter the Sacred Mosque, if God wills, with minds secure, heads shaved, hair cut short, and without fear. For He knew what ye knew not, and He granted, besides this, a speedy victory.

‏48:27 لقد صدق الله رسوله الرؤيا بالحق لتدخلن المسجد الحرام ان شاء الله امنين محلقين رؤوسكم ومقصرين لاتخافون فعلم مالم تعلموا فجعل من دون ذلك فتحا قريبا
